2 GSNJ 2018 Seminar Presentations and Speakers Please see for speaker biographies. Each presentation is 55 minutes followed by 15 minute Q&A, with a 15 minute break between presentations. 1A: DNA: A Power Tool in the Genealogist s Tool Box DNA test results are so much more than ethnicity pie charts. Using real-life case examples, Karen will explore the practical applicability of DNA tests to everyday genealogical problems. She will include an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of testing companies to help the genealogist make informed consumer choices. 2A: Finding Your Way Around AncestryDNA AncestryDNA manages the largest database of people (currently about seven million) who submitted consumer-based DNA samples for genealogy. The test is a simple saliva sample and costs about $69. Karen will provide us with the basic facts about the AncestryDNA test. Then she will be our tour guide through the common features and under-utilized tools available to the test taker. Additionally, she will demonstrate how to transfer the raw data results to FamilyTreeDNA and GEDmatch to compensate for the lack of a company-provided chromosome browser. 3A: My Ancestors Live On In Me: Autosomal DNA Basics I Karen will review fundamental concepts essential to the proper interpretation of atdna test results in every-day, understandable language. The focus is on inheritance principles and relationship predictions. Common mistakes in analysis and assumptions are included. 4A: My Ancestors Live On In Me: Autosomal DNA Basics II Real-life case examples demonstrating correlation among members of a focus study group to solve genealogical problems using both DNA and documentary evidence. 1B: What s New at the New Jersey State Archives Catherine Stearns Medich, New Jersey State Archives Catherine will provide an overview of new resources and records at the New Jersey State Archives including the addition of more original vital records, the expansion of records available on microfilm, and the expansion of naturalization records. 2B: New Jersey and the Great War Joseph Bilby, Assistant Curator, National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey New Jersey was acutely involved in World War I. From supplying units raised from New Jersey s National Guard, volunteers, and selective service; to the production and storage of armaments (Black Tom, an island depot off of Jersey City, was destroyed by German saboteurs); to serving as training, embarkation/debarkation camps for millions headed to the European theater; to witnessing the end of the conflict where President Harding signed the Knox Porter Agreement in Senator Frelinghuysen s living room in Raritan Borough the war touched millions of New Jerseyans. 3B: House Histories: The Ancestral Story Beyond the Documents Lorraine Arnold What do you know about the life of your ancestors? Documents provide facts and a sketch of their history, but what about the personal story? What can you learn about your ancestor from the building they lived or worked in? Lorraine will take you beyond the documents to determine how the history of a structure can bring your ancestor to life. The presentation will explore multi-disciplinary resources, using case studies, along with details of how they can be brought together to breathe life into what was once simply facts on paper. Note: Lorraine will be available afterward to meet one-on-one with anyone who needs help with getting started or whose searches have hit a brick wall. your specific questions to: lorraine@legacyroots.com. 4B: Streamline Your Genealogical Planning and Research: Go Paperless!
