DNA Opening Doors for Today s s Genealogist Presented to JGSI Sunday, March 30, 2008 Presented by Alvin Holtzman

Genetic Genealogy Discussion Points What is DNA How can it help genealogists What to expect from results What DNA analysis can trace and not trace Why test through FamilyTreeDNA Participating in the JGSI DNA Project Comparing and sharing results and discussing strategies

Traditional Documentation Birth records Marriage records Death records Census records Tape recorded stories from relatives Ship s s manifests Cemetery records City Directories Hospital records Citizenship records Maps Newspaper records Yad Vashem records Photo albums Genetic Genealogy complements traditional research

Enter.DNA Deoxyribonucleic Acid Cells are the fundamental working units of all living things. The basic cell structure consists of a nucleus surrounded by a jelly- like substance known as cytoplasm. Within the nucleus are chromosomes Within the cytoplasm is mitochondria

Three Types of DNA DNA comes from the father only and is passed on only to his sons. Y-DNA Mitochondrial DNA, (mtdna)) comes exclusively from the mother but is passed on to both male and female children. Autosomal DNA DNA is present in both males and females

DNA Won t t Answer All Your Questions DNA pre-dates religion and country borders DNA reveals your genetic makeup-haplogroup ID Testing won t t fill in entire branches of your family tree Establishes and confirms relationships Proves or disproves family lore about lineages DNA technology is relatively new data testing and interpretation is evolving

DNA Testing DNA for genealogy focuses on the sex chromosomes and not the autosomal DNA Males Males receive both Y-DNA Y and mtdna Females receive mtdna

What we can trace and what we can t

Why FamilyTreeDNA Largest DNA database Largest Jewish based DNA database Longest history is this field pioneered the concept Confidential and safe Collaboration with National Geographic

Deep Relationships Haplogroups How closely are we related? We each belong to a specific population cluster. We call these clusters Haplogroups Q R O P Y

Haplogroups

Matches - Who am I related to? (& how closely) Displayed are the names and addresses of people that you match. You can match against the entire database, specific projects, or both

Y-DNA Test Results The locations tested on the Y chromosome are called markers. Each marker has a name, such as DYS#391. The scientists classify these markers as Short Tandem Repeat (STR) markers. The proteins at these marker locations are short repeats. The result for a marker is a count of the number of repeats at the location. The result received for a Y-DNA Y test is a string of numbers which represents the repeats found for each marker.

12 marker matches are best for identifying deep links perhaps sharing a common male ancestor that lived 1,000 years ago.

Based on a 37 of 37 match, when did our common male ancestor live?

Based on a 36 of 37 match, when did our common male ancestor live?

Based on matching 35 of 37 markers, when did our common male ancestor live?

Based on matching 67 of 67 markers when did our common male ancestor live?

JGSI DNA Project Capitalizes on FamilyTreeDNA existing database Offers our members reduced rates Compare and share our results and discuss strategies

The Process Complete order form and provide payment. FamilyTreeDNA will mail you a DNA Collection Kit with all the information you will need to take the DNA samples and mail it back. DNA samples are sent to the lab for processing. FTDNA s you a link to your online (MyFTDNA( MyFTDNA) ) page where you can track the test progress. You are notified via of your test results which are on your r personal page. You are free to your matches and initiate dialogue with your new found cousins. You are eligible to join other appropriate projects (surname or geographical).
