1 The Winner Winter 2014 Joseph Glidden s The Winner barbed wire, patented Nov. 24, 1874 #157,124 Barbed Wire Sites Bus Tour Features Jacob Haish long with Joseph Glidden and Isaac A Ellwood s Barb Fence Company, the Jacob Haish Manufacturing Co. of DeKalb was one of the largest manufacturers of barbed wire. Haish s interesting and maybe lesser-known story will be the subject of the 2014 Barbed Wire Sites Bus Tour. Local historian Steve Bigolin and Haish descendant Jeff Marshall will narrate the tours. Stops include the Jacob Haish furniture exhibit at the Ellwood House Visitor Center, the DeKalb Masonic Temple, and the Fairview Cemetery burial site. Drive-by narration aided by a PowerPoint presentation will showcase buildings significant to the Haish history that no longer exist. A highlight of the tour will be a display of Marshall s personal Haish collection at Glidden Homestead. A model of the extravagant Haish mansion, on loan from the Regional History Center at NIU, will be the focal point of the exhibit. The model was built by W. Joseph Zack in partial fulfillment of the requirements for his Master of Fine Arts degree at NIU in Haish was involved in the infamous patent dispute with Joseph Glidden, for which Glidden was ultimately declared the winner by the US Supreme Court. As a benefactor of DeKalb, Haish donated $150,000 to establish the community library, and joined forces with his rivals to have Northern Illinois State Normal School located in DeKalb. Tickets are $15/person ($12 for members). Pre-registration is required. To register, return the enclosed form, call or write infogliddenhomestead.org. Marcia Wilson (right) with Marge Johnson of Pay-It-Forward House. Each partner organization will earn 45 percent of their sales in profit for operations. Market Day Win-Win ust in time for the holidays the attached J Market Day dessert fund raiser! Look over the delicious selections and stock your freezer. Market Day offers premium quality foods, saves you time to make other holiday specialties, and earns the Homestead 45 percent of your sale. Pies will be delivered on Friday, November 21, with two pickup-location choices for your convenience. Don t have need of desserts for yourself? Here s a win-win! Order pies to be delivered to one of three local organizations who provide meals to their clientele: Hope Haven, Safe Passage, or Feed Em Soup. Profits from your order will still benefit Glidden Homestead, and we will deliver your order to the charity indicated on your order form. Out-of-towners, this is also a great way for you to support the Homestead, plus a social service nonprofit, if you live too far away to order pies for yourself. Orders are due by Tuesday, November 11 by mail, phone, or . Payment can be made by check or credit card. See the order form for more details. Thank you for your support!
2 News Bites A Brief Pictorial Review of 2014 Holiday Happenings Sunday, November 16 Noon-4:00 p.m. Join us for musical entertainment and refreshment as we open the holiday season and close the Homestead s Year of the Barn tour season. Enjoy warm holiday wassail and refreshments; and take advantage of the last day this season to tour the Homestead and watch blacksmith demonstrations in the Phineas Vaughan Blacksmith Shop. Divas Dish for Glidden Homestead Saturday, April 25, 2015 Mark your calendars now to attend! Malta Mustangs 4H Club presented a petting zoo for Kids Day at the Barn. Summer intern Mary Adams provided extra hands for many projects. Here she readies Denny Rehn s farm tool display. How about being a Diva (or even a Dude)? Do you have an old favorite family recipe that you could make and share? A favorite ethnic dish? Something contemporary developed in your own kitchen? Contact Divas Dish chair Steven (Kepp) Johnson at info@gliddenhomestead.org for more information. A generous donor provided new to us office furniture. Wow, an actual desk! Architectural preservationists take a rare look at the hayloft of the barn in readiness for a discussion on restoration, future use, and fund raising.
