1 Your website is a gold mine 64% of people on Yelp! Make over $100,000 a year and they are looking for places to spend it. 84% of people search the internet for local and small businesses to support. Your website is your most valuable and hardest working marketing tool. You should forget about any other form of advertising until you have an amazing website. The website works 24hours a day and once it s up and functioning, it takes tiny amounts of money to maintain. Cost of creating a website Myth: Websites are really expensive. A good website costs at least $10k. Maybe even $50k. Fact: Websites do not have to be anywhere near that expensive. You can get a basic website for as little as $500. Sure, you can spend $10k on a website but for a very small business or solopreneur that's not necessary. For an exceptional but basic website, you can expect to pay about $1,000-1,500. Other expenses of a website: Website hosting - $ /year Domain name registration - about $10/year Maintenance/updates - $0-1200/year Who helps you create a website Graphic/Visual Designer: helps create your business identity. They don t have to be expensive but because it s so important to have a great logo and collateral (business cards, flyers, letterhead, etc.) for marketing you should work with a good designer. You get what you pay for. Think of all the companies whose logo you immediately recognize: McDonald s, Apple, Microsoft, and Starbucks. They have brand identity and you need it, too. Find a designer you trust and work with them. They basically create the face of your business and they can also create the look of your website. You can expect to pay anywhere between $50 for a serviceable logo to $4000 for logo plus website package for small business. Website Developer: takes your design and creates your website from it. They handle all of the back-end coding, scripting, testing, and server stuff. I like to say they make the cool stuff happen on a website. Designers make it pretty; developers make it go. You ll find there are a lot of folks that do both website design and development. That s fine; just make sure they have the creative touch and technical skills to handle both sides. Again, developers don t have to be expensive but you get what you pay for. Find one you trust and stick with them. They can usually do your initial development and all of your maintenance. You can expect to pay between $35-70 hour. Look for packaged deals. If you choose to create a WordPress website (which is what I would recommend) be sure your developer has extensive skills as WordPress is its own beast. Check their portfolio and ask to talk to past clients. Copywriter: will help transform your words and stories into written art. They can take your existing content or this completed workbook and write every part of your website content. They can write titles, headings, product descriptions, and more for all of your pages. A really well-written site is a requirement
2 to keeping visitors on your website and getting them to come back. If your website looks amazing, what good is it if it doesn t say anything? Content is the key. Find a good writer that can match your style and write content that sounds like you. This is a really good idea but totally not necessary. It will totally set you apart from others in your field, you will know a good copywriter by their ability to transform your voice/writing-not change it. The copy on your website should still sound like you talk. Cost is usually per page and all over the map. Often times you can trade your awesome skills for this (actually you might be able to do partial or full trades with any of these professionals). SEO specialist: helps get your content seen by the search engines. SEO is a really big thing right now and it s easy to get scammed, so be careful. Find someone that is credible and you trust to work with. A good rule of thumb is to assume that anyone that contacts you is not legitimate. You need to find them. A good SEO specialist will help boost your content and use correct methods for building your search engine ranking. No one can guarantee you a #1 result in a Google search and you should never pay for links. Do not work with anyone that will promise you any of this. Again this is not at all necessary but will make you more findable and separate you from all the rest out there in the great big world of the internet. Do not pay more that $1000-you are just getting taken advantage of then. Your best bet, pay $49 to these guys and do it yourself The bottom line is this: when hiring, find someone you can trust, that has experience, and does good quality work. They don t have to cost a fortune, but they shouldn t be too-good-to-be-true cheap either. WordPress: Cost effective and EASY TO USE websites WordPress is a free tool. It makes it easy to update your website yourself. You can get in and update any of the content of your website and not worry about messing anything up. And, if you do, you can easily revert to a previous version because WordPress keeps a copy of each page every time you update (and it does some auto-saving too). WordPress is very dynamic. You can do a lot of fancy, or even just convenient, things easily and quickly with built-in functionality or by using plugins (free and premium). Your website can be as complex or as simple as you want and it doesn't have to look like a "blog." WordPress is a content management system so it stores all of your content in a database. This means you can easily change the theme (styling) of your website without losing any of your content. If you have a blog, you can schedule posts to come out in advance. Changing a page is similar to creating a Word document, very similar tools and things to use so just about anybody who has ever used a word processing program can utilize WordPress. What this means is you pay a developer to create your website and until you want to do something crazy fancy or change it all you never have to call them again-you can update your bio, add testimonials, update services and specials quickly.
3 Look at templates in themeforest.net, woothemes.com and mojo-themes.com to get an idea of how you can construct your website. If you like one these 95% or more you can work with a developer to make it 100% yours. Themes cost between $30-80 but if you need to modify or change several things it will most likely be in your best interest to have a developer build it from scratch. Why you shouldn t do your own website 1. No matter how good you are, unless you are a web developer it will always look like a homemade website, which in today s high tech world will drive traffic away. 2. It is time consuming. You think it will take 8 hours to build a website-you need to triple that number and probably double that again. It is so time consuming and tedious. Trying to save money? Take that 48+ hours you spend being mad at your computer and think about how many networking events you could have gone to get new clients. Or how much of that time you could have spent working on clients being happy and relaxed. 3. It is frustrating-so, so frustrating. Because you don t understand, things take longer to upload than you thought, then they don t look right, ugh! All you get from this is frustration and grumpiness when you could have just spent the $1000 and gone out and hunted up the 20 clients you needed to pay for it. No you are stuck with a subpar website, an upset stomach and no clients. Home or Landing Page: the introduction/handshake What does your website need to include? Include a tiny bit about who you are, what you do. This is your introduction or your elevator pitch. The idea is to get people curious enough to click further into your site. Include a Calls To Action to read more about you (click to bio page) or to learn about your services (click to services page) or better yet contact you (click over to contact page) About or Bio page: who are you? How did you get here? What do you love to do? Include a call to action to visit services page or book an appointment Include a picture of yourself and your space this will help them feel more comfortable when they arrive. Services: What you offer, FAQ (frequently asked questions like session length, what if my feet small and do I have to get naked) Share a client success story and some testimonials. Any specials or packages go here and possibly on the home page. You must put your prices on this page or no one will call you. People want to and need to know what to expect-also in today s strange world of human trafficking it will make you look legit and not like they might be signing up for a place that serves extras Include a call to action-contact me to book your appointment Contact Page: how to get to you, how to reach you. etc Include a map, possibly a picture, and a schedule of hours
4 Include multiple ways to contact you like a contact form, a phone number and an , a link to your online scheduler if you have one. People like options give them several. Also if you are on social media include like me on face book, get my newsletter or follow me on twitter badges. Your end goal on your website is to get every person to your contact page to connect or reach out in some way so you can keep the conversation going and sell them some services.
