1 STAND OUT A blogger s and business owner s guide to being seen online THE NECTAR COLLECTIVE, LLC.COM

2 Trying to stand out online can be a difficult (and frustrating) process. With millions of blogs and businesses, how is that some get more exposure and others, well, don t? In this guide, I m sharing seven ways that you can help your website be seen by more people. Each tip also contains an action item -- something you can start doing today to really elevate your brand and stand out amongst the rest. Ready to rock and roll, my friend? 1. CREATE INSANELY USEFUL CONTENT Many of the tips in this guide include ways to get more people to visit your blog. But even more important than getting people to arrive on your site is getting them to stay on your site. You can t stand out with subpar content. So, before sharing the following marketing tips, here s one that you should take heed of: strive to create overthe-top, crazy useful content for your readers and potential readers. This means: Writing longer posts with lots of detail. Including relevant images and screenshots in your posts. Adding your personal experience and advice. Answering questions your readers didn t even know they should be asking. ACTION ITEM: Go through five of your most popular posts from the past and update them with more info, more relevant images, and anything that might make someone think, I can t believe this is free! 2. GUEST POST ON OTHER SITES A stellar way to get your site in front of new eyes is to guest post on other blogs. This means that you create an exclusive post to be shared on someone else s blog. This drives traffic to your site because there is an opportunity for you to include a bio underneath your post (ideally with a link to your blog!). How to find sites that are a good guest-posting fit? They don t necessarily have to be sites in the same niche as you. In fact, if you reach out to a blog with a very similar niche, you may end up writing a post that gets seen by the exact same followers you already have. Instead, find a blog that is slightly different from yours, but has an audience that would most likely be interested in your site. Try to build a rapport with the other blogger before sending them a pitch idea. This can be done by interacting with them on social media or leaving engaged comments on their blog. They are much more likely to let you guest post if they know who you are. THE NECTAR COLLECTIVE, LLC.COM

3 ACTION ITEM: Write down three blogs that would be a good fit to guest post on. Next to their names, write down a guest post idea. Pitch it to them this week! 3. CREATE A CONSISTENT BRAND There are few better ways to stand out than to be incredibly consistent with everything you do. Even if you have a small audience, people will start to recognize what you do if you re consistent with it. I recommend creating a style guide for your website. This will ensure that you have a strong grasp on your brand s value, audience, and aesthetics. The more you stick to this style guide, the better off you ll be. ACTION ITEM: Create a style guide for your brand. Find ways to update your website to meet the brand personality you wrote about in your style guide. For example, updating old blog post images to match your new, colorful style. 4. BECOME A HUB FOR ALL THINGS X Are there any sites you visit because they are your go-to source for something specific? Perhaps it s a travel blog that always feeds your wanderlust or a business blog that answers every entrepreneur-related question you can think of. You, too, have the chance to be a hub for something in particular. What kind of knowledge or experience do you have to offer? Which posts tend to be more popular with your readers? The intersection of those two answers is your sweet spot, friend. In other words, what value do you give your readers? What do they take away from your site each time they visit? Once you ve decided what value you give, be sure to spread that value everywhere your brand exists. For example, don t be a go-to social media marketing blog and then have a Pinterest full of recipes and an Instagram full of blurry pictures of your niece. If you really want to stand out, you should aim to create a highly consistent and specific brand wherever you go and wherever your brand exists online. ACTION ITEM: Write down the specific value or take-away that your readers get from visiting your site. Then, brainstorm ways you can incorporate that value into your complete online presence (i.e. your website, social media, newsletter, etc). THE NECTAR COLLECTIVE, LLC.COM

4 5. COLLABORATE WITH OTHERS Similar to guest posting, collaboration in any form will allow you to be seen by new audiences and build friendships with others in your field. It is a total win-win. The fun thing about blogging and online business is that you can really think outside the box with how you collaborate with others. The sky is truly the limit! Here are a few suggestions for things you can pitch to a new blogger buddy: A co-webinar Q&A Interviewing another blogger for your blog or social media Teaching an e-course together (I did this in my first year of blogging!) Leading an in-person workshop together Guest posting on each other s sites Hosting an Instagram photo challenge together Hosting a Twitter Chat together Think outside the box! An example? In my first year of blogging, I co-hosted something called the Snail Mail Collective, which paired international participants together so that they could exchange snail mail packages each month. My following was relatively small and I wasn t very close at the time to the other blogger I hosted the project with, but we still managed to get hundreds of participants and we ended up becoming good friends! Many bloggers or business owners think they are too small to collaborate with others. I only have 100 followers, I don t think someone would want to collaborate with me, right? Wrong, sister! Imagine getting up in front of a room to lead a workshop to 100 people (or however many followers you have). That room would be pretty packed! Small numbers online are actually many, many people in real life. Don t forget that. ACTION ITEM: Think of a fun project that could benefit your community. Then, think of someone to co-host or lead it with you. Reach out to them! 6. INTERACT This tip seems so obvious, but very few people do it and even fewer do it effectively: interact with people on social media. You ll seldom stand out if all you do is stand on your soapbox and share your own content with people. THE NECTAR COLLECTIVE, LLC.COM

5 Instead of only sharing your own photos, tweets, and promotions, visit other people s pages and interact with their content. Share other people s work more than you share your own (tagging them so they can see it!). Leave comments that show you re listening. In every sense, try to build relationships with people on social media. ACTION ITEM: Follow the 30/70 rule. Use 30% of your social media time to promote and share your own content. The other 70% should be used to promote, share, and interact with other people s content. How can you add more of that to your social media schedule? 7. BOOST FB POSTS This is something I ve recently started doing, and with great results. Whenever I publish a blog post, I ll also share it to my Facebook page. Occasionally, I ll see a post that seems to be getting more likes than the others. People are connecting to it. When that happens, I give it even more of a nudge by spending $5 to boost it. Facebook has incredibly intelligent marketing algorithms, so you can target a very specific audience that you want to see your post. This means that it gets viewed only by people who might enjoy it, rather than anyone and everyone on Facebook. It also means that instead of getting viewed by a small handful of people who get your Page updates, it can now be viewed by thousands of people. And for 5 bucks? It s a steal! ACTION ITEM: Find a post on your Facebook page that people seemed to like. If your page is totally silent, then find a post that you think could be really valuable if the right people saw it.
