2 About Simon Jordan. In his late 20s and on a death wish, Simon Jordan weighed 23 stone (322lb), he was binge eating and drinking and on drugs. Then 18 months later after making a decision to change his life around he now weighed 13 stone (182lbs) and finished the London Marathon at 3hrs 45 minutes and now clean from drugs and drink. 6 Does that quote sound familiar? If we have gone to the struggle and effort to set up our businesses then why can we end up working with such difficult and sometimes unpleasant clients? This is not the same for us all, I can appreciate that, but this section is all about focusing on the kinds of clients who you just love to work with. You know the ones who leave you feeling happy and positive as opposed to the ones that leave you feeling exhausted, frustrated and just plain angry. We have a choice and here s how we can start to make it. If you think about your clients and customers, who are the ones that you love to work with? The ones that are a real pleasure to do business with we will call The Good. I want you to make a list of these clients, write down what source they come to you from. For example, is it from a particular publication or word-of-mouth source? What are they like to work with and what type of people are they? This is drilling down even further into your target market but bare with me because it really works and I want you to not just have a thriving business but also a happy business. Once you have written the first list in as much detail as possible, I then want you to write down the list of your Bad clients. Now I don t mean bad as in evil, I mean the type of clients that are the bread and butter clients. The ones who are ok to work with but will never set your world alight. Again, where do they come in from, what source and what are they like to work with? Then finally write down the list of clients who are the Ugly clients. I don t mean physically ugly, I mean the ones who are a pain to work with. The ones that argue over money, don t pay on time and are just plain difficult and leave you with bitten fingernails and hair loss. Again, where do they come in from and what type of people are they? With this exercise I want you to write down as much as possible. The more info the better placed you will be to focus on the ways you attract the Good clients.

7 I was giving a lecture on marketing recently and talking about the Good, Bad and the Ugly clients. One of the delegates told me that he was attracting too many of the Ugly clients and they were simply a nightmare to work with. They didn t pay on time, he spent a lot of time frustrated and feeling exhausted by them. He did however tell me that he had a few clients who were a breath of fresh air for him. He told me that they treated him with respect and didn t try and knock him down on price all the time. They paid on time and he loved working with them. I asked him to explain in as much detail as possible the description of these clients; What kind of job did they have? Were they male or female? What age were they? Where did they live etc. I then asked him how these Good clients came to find him and he explained that he had placed a small advert in a local parish magazine, and that some of these clients had referred him on. I then asked him where the Ugly clients had come from. He told me that most of them came from the Yellow Pages. His business was in residential cleaning and having spent the time looking into the different types of clients with him and where he got the Good ones from, he then decided to not continue to advertise in the Yellow Pages. When advertising in the Yellow Pages he was finding that he had no control over who saw his advert as it covered a wide area, whereas the advert in his local parish magazine was only being seen by the people in that area. He decided to put more effort into marketing in that area and I suggested that he could provide a refer a friend scheme to his Good clients where if they referred a new client to him they would get 10% off their next bill. I spoke to him last week and he told me that he has more Good clients now than Ugly clients and he feels so much happier in his work. He still has the Bad clients and we all need those, but the main thing is, he worked out where the clients he really wanted to work with were coming from and then focused on attracting more of this type. It s a great exercise and one that I did myself some years ago and it worked a treat. I am now in the position to pick and choose who

8 I work with and as we spend most of our time working, shouldn t you do the same? If you re happy in your work you can achieve more. Stands to reason really doesn t it? Why would we want more of the bad stuff when if we focus and take action we can get what we want. 10 WHO ARE YOUR BAD CLIENTS? The ones that simply bring in the bread and butter work. Make a list of who they are, where they come from and what type of client they are.

11 WHO ARE YOUR UGLY CLIENTS? Make a list of who they are, where they come from so you can workout where not to promote to avoid these types of clients.
