Quilt Block Stars & Heart Stencil #70851 Preparation: Preparation for the background is really a lot of fun by simply using some common household items. If you would rather not add the effects to the background, simply basecoat your surface with Blue Haven and proceed However I d like to show you a simple and fun way to get a unique background! We start by basecoating the entire piece with Natural Buff and let this dry completely. We start with the Plastic Wrap method first! Tear off enough to cover all your surface at once; it s much easier to do this all in one step! Now we need to make a wash using our Blue Haven paint. You may add a little Extender to this if you like and enough water to give it an ink-like consistency. Our main key here is to keep the surface wet with this layer of paint before using the Plastic Wrap. 1

3 As I mentioned, you want to do this in one continuous step! So now basecoat your surface with your Blue Haven wash and spritz with water if necessary to keep this damp. Once you ve covered your entire surface, gently lay the Plastic Wrap over the damp paint. It s going to wrinkle etc but this is what we want! Press it down gently with your hands until you are sure the plastic wrap has completely covered the surface. Then gently lift up your wrap! You will have a very unique pattern of lines and swirls underneath!! This is such a fun and easy step and it never comes out the same way twice! Let this dry completely before proceeding with the next step of effects! We are basically going to do the same method, but we will be using Bubble Wrap instead of the Plastic Wrap. Once your surface has completely dried, create another wash with Natural Buff and apply it to your surface. Remember to keep this paint damp, just like we did in the previous step. Now simply lay a piece of Bubble Wrap over your surface and gently press down. Slowly lift the Bubble Wrap up for a subtle dotted effect in the background. Once this has dried, you can transfer your main design. Painting Instructions: BIRDHOUSE Basecoat the top and bottom sections of the birdhouse with Warm White. This may need two coats for solid coverage. Transfer your checkered pattern and paint every other square with Black. Basecoat the middle section of the birdhouse with Cocoa. Then drybrush this with Honey Brown and again with Golden Straw to highlight. Shade around the inside edges with Traditional Burnt Umber and also bring a bit of that down into the birdhouse. I also added fine lines of Black to the middle section to help resemble woodgrain. The heart frame is done in solid Tomato Red. The inside section of the heart is done in Black. Add a thinned Warm White accent line and dot to highlight the inside of the heart starting in the upper right hand side. The perch is a small Black dot. The roof is based in Russet and drybrushed lightly with Terra Cotta. Finely outline the entire birdhouse with Black. BRACKET (coming up from the roof of the Birdhouse) Shade where the bracket will be first with Traditional Burnt Umber. Once this has dried, use your ruler (optional) to line over the Traditional Burnt Umber with Black. (I used my pen for that part). The bow (that is where the bracket meets the roof) is based in Terra Cotta and then go back over it with your Black pen to outline. FLOWER POTS (by the Birdhouse at the bottom) Basecoat the bottom part of each flower pot with Terra Cotta. Highlight on the right hand side with Spiced Pumpkin. The tops of the flower pots are based in Antique Green. Drybrush those areas with Golden Straw. The flower pot on the left has an alternating check pattern done with Russet. The flower pot on the right has narrow lines painted with thinned Golden Straw and thinned Russet. Shade the left inside edges of each 2

4 pot with Traditional Burnt Umber. The stems are lined in Antique Green, then lined over finely with Black. The leaf is based solidly in Antique Green, with the top half being shaded with Marigold. The leaf is also finely outlined in Black. The flower on the left has solid Marigold petals that have been accented with a fine line in the middle of each petal using Spiced Pumpkin. The center is solid Russet, that has been finely dotted with Marigold. The petals and the center have been finely outlined in Black. The flower on the right has solid Spiced Pumpkin petals that have been accent with a fine line in the middle of each petal using Tomato Red. The center is solid Russet that has been finely dotted with Spiced Pumpkin. The petals and center have been finely outlined in Black. BUTTERFLY Basecoat the butterfly with Lavender. Drybrush with Wild Orchid and highlight with Purple Cow. The body is painted with solid Traditional Burnt Umber with a few fine lines of Honey Brown to highlight. The spots on the butterfly s wings are all done in Black, as well as the antennae. Finely outline in Black as well. PURPLE STAR FLOWER (hanging from bracket) Basecoat the petals in the back with Lavender. Basecoat the main star part with Wild Orchid. Drybrush with Purple Cow. Finely outline in Black and the center is also Black. BOTH YELLOW FLOWERS (hanging from bracket) All petals are based with solid Marigold. Accent the petals with fine lines of Spiced Pumpkin. The centers are done solidly with 3

5 Traditional Burnt Umber with a few Marigold dots added. Finely outline the petals and the centers with Black. SMALL BIRDHOUSE (hanging from bracket) The bottom of the birdhouse is based solidly in Warm White. Alternating checks are done in Russet. The main part of the birdhouse is done in Antique Green. Drybrush with Golden Straw and shade on the left inside edge with Traditional Burnt Umber. Roof is done in solid Russet. Heart and hole are done in Black. Finely outline the birdhouse in Black as well. WELCOME SIGN Basecoat the sign with Cocoa. Drybrush with Honey Brown and highlight with a bit of Golden Straw. Shade around the sign with Traditional Burnt Umber, quite heavily on the left inside edge. Line the words with Black as well as the strings holding the sign. Finely outline the sign in Black as well. LADYBUG Basecoat the ladybug s body solidly with Tomato Red. Her spots, head and antennae are all done in Black. She is also finely outlined in Black as well. BUMBLEBEE - Wings are painted with Warm White. Basecoat the bee s body solidly with Marigold. Shade underneath with Spiced Pumpkin, then add your Black stripes. Head and antennae are also Black, as well as finely outlining the entire bee in Black. The dashed trail following the bee is also done in Black (I used my pen for that part.) BLUEBIRD Basecoat the bird s chest in Spiced Pumpkin then drybrush with Warm White. Basecoat the rest of the bird with Blue Harbor and drybrush with Blue Haven. The bird s eyes are Black and his beak is solid Spiced Pumpkin. Finely outline the bird with Black. FLAG Basecoat the flag solidly with Lavender. Drybrush with Wild Orchid, then again with Purple Cow to highlight. Shade the area in the creases of the flag with an equal mix of Lavender and Traditional Burnt Umber. Add the polka dots with Warm White. Finely outline the flag in Black. The ball at the top of the bracket is also solid Black. 4

6 STENCILING Using your heart stencil, I wanted to add a bit more in the space around the bracket. I picked a couple of different sizes to work with. Simply stencil the hearts by drybrushing Boysenberry Pink. Once dry, I drybrushed the center of the hearts with Natural Buff. Finishing: Once our project has dried, we will be ready to seal! I spray sealed mine using Americana Acrylic Spray Sealer/Finisher - Matte. Two light coats are best, letting it dry between coats. Once dry, your project will be ready to display!!
