Glaze Wash, size ¾ #20102 Shader, size 4 #20126; size 12 #20131 Script Liner, size 10/0 #20137 Preparation: Note about the fabric painting medium: I put a little of the fabric painting medium in a small cap from a jar and dipped my brush in it as I needed. You can mix it with your paint and get the same results. I don t always paint an entire design at one time so it was easy for me to put it in a lid and not waste so much paint. It is important to avoid using a lot of water on your brush think of the fabric painting medium as water in this case. It will make your paint stiff and somewhat sticky if you mix it and leave it for a while. Most of the time when you are painting on fabric, you will want to wash it and dry without using a dryer sheet. On the lunch bag, I didn t do any of that preparation for it. First cut a piece of stiff cardboard to fit inside the bag and covered it with waxed paper (or plastic wrap) so that the paint doesn t bleed through. It does give you more painting stability to have something stiff under it. If you prefer your bag to have a clean cream color background, then eliminate the instructions for the background. Trace you pattern on and go straight to painting. I like a messy background but it isn t for everyone. 1

3 Background: Spray water on the front of the bag, saturating it well. Pick up some thinned Antique Maroon on an old stiff brush. It is a good idea to thin the paint with water also before brushing it on the lunch bag. You can always darken. Scrub the paint in on your canvas bag in various places. It s good for your color to bleed and fade into the background. Dip or drag a piece of sewing thread (approximately 6 inches) in Dark Chocolate and bounce across your bag. Drag it a little also. Do this while the bag is still wet so that your color will soften into the background. Using the corner of a brush, you can touch some larger spots down randomly. Use either Dark Chocolate or Antique Maroon. Your choice. Allow the bag to dry thoroughly. Design: Trace your pattern on using your normal graphite paper and stylus. I found that using one of the larger ball ends of the stylus worked well for getting your pattern on. You can paint all over the design when you have a specific color on your brush that is used elsewhere, but I m going to start at the base and move up. Pour a little Fabric Painting Medium in a small jar lid. Dip your brush in it and into your paint as you apply paint to the design. You can also mix the medium in your paint if you want. Starting on the right side, paint Bright Orange, as you move toward the left, pick up Tomato Red and finish. Soften your colors together where they meet. The dots are Warm White. The lower rim is basecoated Orchid. The checks are Plum. Stem: Basecoat Foliage Green and add Plum Checks. Shade the left side of the green checks with Hauser Medium Green. Highlight the right side just a little using Lemonade. Run a streak of Warm White down the stem for a highlight. The highlight will need repeating as it will sort of sink in to the paint. 2

4 Glass: The heart is Bright Orange on the right side, blending into Tomato Red as you move to the left. Soften the colors together. The glass area above the heart is Bright Orange on the left side, working into Tomato Red on the right side. Soften the colors together. Repeat if needed. Float Deep Burgundy at the top right (just under the green band) and the lower right behind the heart. The green band is basecoated Foliage Green, shaded on each side with Hauser Medium Green, and highlighted in the center with Lemonade and then Warm White. The glass above the green band is basecoated Warm White. Repeat as needed. The cherries in the glass are basecoated Tomato Red and highlighted at the top by adding Warm White to your Tomato Red. Add a final Warm White highlight to each. The stems are Deep Burgundy. No shading on these cherries. Now, brush Warm White up onto each cherry to show it would be covered in the ice cream. Repeat if needed. Float Winter Blue down the left side of the glass and the lower right side. Brush a little more Winter Blue here and there for interest. Dry brush or float just a little Honey Brown here and there. This should help it look like the ice cream extends down into the glass. Streak Warm White down the glass for a highlight. Repeat if needed. The top rim of the glass is Orchid with Plum Checks. Float Plum along the lower edge of the Orchid checks. Ice Cream: Basecoat Light Buttermilk. Shade or float Honey Brown to give you some shading and some breaks in the ice cream. Cream Topping: Basecoat Warm White. Float Winter Blue for shading and creating the mounds. You can float under the chocolate drips after painting the chocolate. Chocolate: Basecoat Dark Chocolate. Float Soft Black along the left side of the drips and around the cherry to form a mound. Float Gingerbread along the Soft Black coming in about 1/8 of an inch. You 3

5 want the Soft Black shading to show. Highlight the Gingerbread with a little Fleshtone. Add Warm White sparkles randomly. Cherries: All of the cherries are basecoated Tomato Red, shaded Deep Burgundy. Highlight with a mix of Tomato Red plus a small amount of Warm White. Add a final Warm White highlight to each. The stem on the top cherry is Deep Burgundy. If you need extra shading on this cherry, you can add Plantation Pine or Black Green to the Deep Burgundy. Leaves: These are Foliage Green, Hauser Light Green, Hauser Medium Green and Plantation Pine. Dirty brush these using all of your greens. Highlight some with Lemonade. The stems are Plantation Pine to Black Green. Lettering: The lettering can be done with Soft Black and the liner brush, or use an IdentiPen. Finishing: Scrub some shading under and around the base of the glass using Dark Chocolate and maybe a little of some of your greens. Most fabric painting, I will finish by pressing the design between two pieces of brown paper sack (be sure it doesn t have printing on it) for several minutes using a very warm iron. For this, I didn t do anything. I m thinking that it isn t going to be laundered a lot and as we know, you can hardly remove paint when you want to, but if you feel better, just heat set the design as I mentioned. 4
