I didn t seal this wood piece because I like to paint with washes of color, especially for the background on this design. It s a good idea to dampen the area you re going to be working on with water. Just dampen thoroughly, not have standing water. Any time throughout the painting, (when surface is dry) sand with a piece of brown paper sack to remove any fuzzies that come up. Painting Instructions: Background: Starting at the top left, begin washing French Vanilla. As you move down, begin blending Honey Brown, and then into Terra Cotta. blend these colors softly where they meet. You can spatter the background now or after you ve painted the design. Spatter with Soft Black 1

3 Torn opening: Paint the torn back edges Terra Cotta. Shade the torn edges next to the opening with Burnt Sienna. Paint the opening behind the nest Soft Black. Shade behind the nest with Lamp Black. Paint the nest after you ve finished the rest of the boot. Boot: Start at the top area of the back of the boot painting Burnt Sienna, working into Dark Chocolate. Stop where the front of the boot begins. Paint Dark Chocolate down into the tongue area. Shade the lower tongue area with Soft Black. Shade Soft Black at the top of the boot where it drops down into the boot. Add Soft Black shading in the open cracks. Starting on the front of the boot at the top, begin painting Honey Brown, and as you move down, pick up Dark Chocolate and continue to the sole. Work Honey Brown into the area under the eyelets, and then back into Dark Chocolate as you finish. When you get to the toe area, begin to soften Burnt Sienna in and finish out to the end of the toe. Highlight the top of the toe with Terra Cotta. Shade Soft Black around the torn edges of the opening and also next to the sole. The eyelets are Terra Cotta with a highlight of Honey Brown plus a tad of French Vanilla. Add a tiny French Vanilla highlight to each. Float Soft Black inside the top eyelet. Float Dark Chocolate around each eyelet. Float again using Soft Black this time. The boot laces are Honey Brown, shaded Terra Cotta and highlighted French Vanilla. The torn openings at the toe are Dark Chocolate, shaded Soft Black. The two small birdies peeking out are French Vanilla, shaded Honey Brown. Their eyes and beaks are Lamp Black. Lightly sand with brown paper sack. Boot sole: 2

4 Wash in using Neutral Grey. Highlight with Slate Grey, and shade Soft Black. Wash some shading under the boot using Antique Maroon. Signs: Streak Neutral Grey and Soft Black across them. Add Slate Grey for some highlights. Detail the ends with Lamp Black hit and miss linework. The lettering is Lamp Black. Nest: Basecoat French Vanilla. Shade Honey Brown around the eggs. Using your liner, streak French Vanilla linework coming out of the nest. The twigs are Honey Brown, shaded and detailed with Dark Chocolate. The twigs coming up to hold the signs are also Dark Chocolate detailed with Soft Black. Leaves: These are strokes of Light Avocado. Sideload some in French Vanilla for variation. Eggs: Basecoat Winter Blue. Shade with Winter Blue plus a small amount of Uniform Blue. Touch the corner of your small flat brush in Slate Grey and dab some spots on the eggs. Highlight the eggs with Winter Blue plus a small amount of Warm White. Birdies: The tummy area is basecoated with Raspberry plus a TINY amount of Camel added to it. Shade with a mix of Raspberry plus Deep Burgundy. Highlight with a mix of Raspberry plus Warm White. The top of their body is Camel shaded first with Honey Brown and then Burnt Sienna (thin). The beaks, legs, and eyes are lamp Black. Home-Sweet-Home: The lettering is Soft Black. Finishing: 3

5 Add Soft Black linework to openings to resemble cracks. Spatter Soft Black over the background if you didn t do this in the beginning. The top shelf is basecoated Soft Black and sanded on the edges to look distressed. Sand with the brown paper sack again. Finish with several coats of DecoArt Sealer/Finisher-Matte, or your favorite product. 4
