3 Painting Instructions: LADDER SHELF AND PREPARING INSERTS The shelf and the background of the inserts are all going to be done exactly the same so it is convenient to do these all at the same time! Basecoat the entire Ladder Shelf and all 4 Inserts with Rustic Chalky Finish Paint. Let dry. Once dry, take your wax and gently rub the wax here and there on the entire shelf and each of the inserts. Keep in mind, where you put the wax is where the darker color will show through once we are finished! Wipe off any loose wax so you don t clog your brush. Now re-basecoat everything in Heirloom Chalky Finish Paint and let dry. Now with your Sanding Pad, gently sand over your shelf. Anywhere the wax was placed will wipe right off, leaving the dark showing underneath for a nice worn look. Once I was finished sanding, I took my cloth and dampened it slightly to wipe back any extra dust. This also takes off just a bit more paint around the waxed areas and smoothes everything up nicely! The next step is to stencil. I used the smaller squares and with a small stencil brush used Soft Black to stencil the sides, front and across the inserts as well. (Refer to pictures for placement and how many rows I did). While I still had my stencil in place (during each section and after I had stenciled the Soft Black) I used the smallest stencil brush and dabbed just a bit of Mink Tan in the left top corner of each Soft Black block. This gives the blocks an extra bit of interest! Once you are done stenciling your shelf, it is finished except for sealing it, which we will do later. Your inserts will now be ready to transfer your designs onto so you can begin painting! SPRING INSERT (Bluebird) Thin some Traditional Burnt Umber with your Easy Float and paint the tree and limbs. Once this is dry, I also used Traditional Burnt Umber to shade around the tree and add details. I finely outlined the tree in Black. The leaves are based in Irish Moss and highlighted on the right hand side with Olive Green. They are also finely outlined in Black. Basecoat the bird in Blue Harbor. Drybrush the bird s belly, chest, face and wings with Blue Haven. I also drybrushed Warm White from his cheek down his chest and belly. Once that is dry, I shaded 2

4 Canyon Orange in this same area, just letting a bit of the Warm White show. I shaded under his wing and around most of the inside edges with Victorian Blue. His beak was painted in Marigold and then shaded in Canyon Orange. I finely outlined the Bluebird in Black and shaded around the outside edges with Traditional Burnt Umber. His eye was lined with Black. The music notes were done in solid Black. The flower stems were shaded in Traditional Burnt Umber before they were painted in Light Avocado. The leaves were also based in Light Avocado. I drybrushed the leaves with Irish Moss and then highlighted the tops of the leaves in Olive Green. I shaded under the leaves with Traditional Burnt Umber. The two outside petals of each flower are based in Boysenberry Pink. The center petal of each is based in Pansy Lavender. I also drybrushed just a bit of Boysenberry Pink over the Pansy Lavender petals. I drybrushed a bit of Warm White mixed with Boysenberry Pink over the pink petals. I then shaded to the right side of the center of those petals with Tomato Red. The stems, leaves and petals were all finely outlined in Black. The dots above the petals were lined in Black as well and dotted with Blue Harbor. I also shaded Traditional Burnt Umber under the right side of the flower petals as well. Now onto Summer! SUMMER INSERT (Brown Wren) The sun is based in Golden Straw. Once dry, drybrush with Banana Cream, then using the same drybrush, add just a bit of Warm White and drybrush a bit more in the center. Shade the outside edge of the sun in Marigold. The bird is based in Sable Brown. Once dry, drybrush with a mix of Sable Brown and Antique White. Once that is dry, drybrush/highlight with Antique White alone, mainly on the wing, face and belly. The beak is based in Marigold and shaded with Canyon Orange. The entire bird is shaded with Traditional Burnt Umber. I shaded a little heavier under the wing. The bird is finely outlined in Black. The top part of his hat, his flag and the ladybug s flag are all based in Antique White, then dry- 3

5 brushed with Warm White. All alternating stripes are painted with thinned Rookwood Red. The patches on the flags and the hat band are all based in Blue Harbor, drybrushed with Blue Haven and shaded with Victorian Blue. The stars are all done with Warm White. The brim of the hat is based in Victorian Blue, then shaded over with Traditional Burnt Umber with Black stripes. The star on top of the bird s flag pole is painted with Antique White. I shaded around both flags, flagpoles and the bird s hat with Traditional Burnt Umber. Flagpoles are Black. Hat and Flags were all finely outlined in Black as well. The ladybug s body is based in solid Rookwood Red. I then drybrushed this with Tomato Red. I shaded around the ladybug with Traditional Burnt Umber and outlined the ladybug in Black. Her dots are Black, highlighted with a Warm White stroke and dot. Her face and antennae are Black, with tiny Warm White dots for her eye and on each antenna. Her mouth is a fine stroke of Warm White as well. I shaded across the bottom of the insert with Traditional Burnt Umber for the ground. I then thinned some Light Avocado and lined fine strokes coming up from the ground for grass. I added a few random flowers dotted petals with Warm White and Marigold centers. The fireworks in the sky are first started by thinning some Warm White and also some Blue Harbor. With the thinned paints, I made a circle of each. In the blue circle, I used thinned Warm White to line strokes coming out of the center. In the white circle, I used thinned Tomato Red to line strokes coming out of the center. I went back to each firework and dotted several small dots of coordinating colors to represent fireworks. Now onto Autumn! AUTUMN INSERT (Blackbird) - The Moon is basecoated with Marigold. I then drybrushed this with Golden Straw and then again lightly with Banana Cream in the center. I shaded around the inside edge with Canyon Orange. The bat is Black with Marigold eyes. The pumpkins are all basecoated with Burnt Orange. I then drybrushed each rib, or section with 4

6 Canyon Orange. Then I drybrushed Marigold, mainly at the top. I shaded each crease between the sections with Burnt Sienna. The stems are all based in Light Avocado. I drybrushed them with a bit of Marigold. I shaded around the outside of each pumpkin with Traditional Burnt Umber. I also outlined each pumpkin (and stem) finely in Black. For the pumpkin s face, I outlined the mouth finely in Black. The nose is based in Burnt Sienna and drybrushed with a bit of Canyon Orange. I shaded the left side of the nose with Marigold. The nose is also outlined finely in Black. The eyes are Black with a Marigold section down the right side. I also thinned some Marigold to line a fine stroke in each eye and dot them as well. The bird is based in Black. I lined around the wing with Blue Harbor to help separate the wing from the body. I drybrushed just a bit of Pansy Lavender on the cheek and on top of the wing. The eye is Marigold with a Blue Harbor iris and a Black pupil. I thinned some Warm White to create a fine line stroke and tiny dot for the eye. The beak was based in Burnt Orange and shaded with a bit of Marigold across the top. It is finely outlined in Black. The bird s hat is based in Pansy Lavender and drybrushed with a bit of Boysenberry Pink. The hat band is based in Irish Moss and drybrushed with a bit of Olive Green. I finely outlined the entire hat with Black and also made the checkerboard pattern across the hatband with Black. I shaded on the left outside edge of the bird with Traditional Burnt Umber. I also shaded Traditional Burnt Umber under the pumpkins, bringing that on out a bit to the left. Time for Winter! WINTER INSERT (Cardinal) - I started by basecoating the Snowman with Warm White. I drybrushed over this with Snow White. Then I shaded around the inside edge, along where the eyes will be and on the left side of the nose and coals with Blue Haven. I float shaded the cheeks with thinned Tomato Red. The eyes are lined in Black, and the coals are based in Black. I mixed just a touch of Black in with Warm White and drybrushed each coal on the upper right hand side. The nose is based in Burnt Orange, then drybrushed with Canyon Orange and highlighted with Marigold. I finely outlined the nose in Black. I shaded under the nose and around the outside edge of the Snowman with Traditional Burnt Umber. His hat is also Black and drybrushed with a mix of Black and Warm White to highlight. The hat band is based in Irish Moss and drybrushed with Olive Green. I then created the checkerboard pattern across the hat band with Black. I shaded around the outside of the hat with Traditional Burnt Umber also. The bird is basecoated solid Rookwood Red. You may want to apply two coats for a nice even coverage. She is then drybrushed quite a bit with Tomato Red. I shaded under her wing, between her wings and above and below where the scarf will be with Soft Black. I also shaded around the inside edge of her with this as well. Her beak is based in Canyon Orange and shaded with just a bit of Marigold. Her facial mask is based in Black. Her eye is lined with thinned Warm White. Her scarf is based in Irish Moss and drybrushed with Olive Green. It is shaded around the inside edges with Light Avocado. The stripes are lined with thinned Tomato Red. The knots at the end of the scarf ends are done with Rookwood Red and the fringe is done in Tomato Red. The beak, the bird and her scarf are all finely outlined in Black. I also shaded around these same areas with Traditional Burnt Umber. The snowflakes at the top are completed with thinned Warm White! Finishing: Now that we have completed our ladder shelf and all four inserts, we just need to seal. I love to use Americana Decor Ultra Matte Varnish for sealing these pieces! Simply brush on or roll on a nice, thin coat. It dries quickly and it is wonderful to use over the combination of Americana Décor Chalky Paints and Acrylics! This was such a fun project!
