I use the slip slapped background application often; I love the random mottled look. Why develop a flat background when with a little bit of brush manipulation you can add tone and texture to your background. This is a quick and easy project which could be enlarged or reduced based on your surface size. This is a rustic surface that is meant to be rough in nature, I sanded it just enough to smooth it out for ease of painting but left some of the roughness for texture. I did not fill the nail holes on the piece either. PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS Background Paint the front and sides of the piece using a slip slap brush technique. Load the 3/4" wash brush with Midnite Blue, dip one corner of the brush into Indian Turquoise and the other into Blue Violet. Do not blend your brush on your palette; instead take it directly to your surface. Begin base coating the surface by using the slip slap technique, moving your brush around the piece. Randomly vary your color placement on the surface to develop a mottled look. Reload your brush as needed to paint the entire piece. Divide the background into the three sections using the line art provided. Base the red border stripe with Santa Red. I used masking tape to mask off the red border for ease of painting. 2 artistsclub.com

5 Base the feature stripe with Indian Turquoise. I used masking tape to mask off the area for ease of painting. Double load a stencil brush with Indian Turquoise and Blue Violet, using the star stencil randomly stencil stars onto the entire front of the piece. (Note the pattern photo for placement.) Transfer the Santa to the front of the box. Undercoat Santa with Fawn. This undercoat will also become the basecoat for Santa s beard, hat trim, and pom. Santa Transfer the face and mouth area and base with Hi-Lite Flesh, float shade with Shading Flesh under the hat, above the mustache and beard, the nose area, under the eyes, and on the lip right under the mouth opening. I prefer to develop this shadow slowly by glaze floating a number of light coats into the areas working from light to dark. Highlight with a light glaze float of Snow White above the eyes, on the top of the nose, cheeks, and lip. Lightly deepen this highlighted area by dry brushing a very light application of Snow White into the highlighted areas. Dry brush the cheeks using a circular motion with Electric Pink. Base inside Santa s mouth with Lamp Black. Base the coat and hat with Santa Red, float shade the coat and hat with Red Violet and dry brush highlight with Electric Pink. (Note the pattern photo for placement.) Base the scarf and gloves with Olive Green, float shade with Hauser Dark Green. Deepen the shaded areas by lightly dry brushing Hauser Dark Green into the shaded areas. Highlight with Neon Scorching Yellow. Using the #2 SL line the stripes on the scarf with Red Violet and using an 18/0 SL line highlight with Electric Pink. Float shade Santa s hat trim and pom with Asphaltum. Double load the #4 flat stipple brush with Snow White and Asphaltum. Tap to blend the paint on your palette before applying paint to the trim and pom, you should see a soft gentle transition from light to dark on your palette and brush. Stipple Santa s hatband and the pom with this double loaded mix; stipple the darker half of the brush on the shaded area and the lighter on the highlighted area. Continue stippling turning your brush so that you achieve a random pattern to the paint and you have achieved a soft fluffy look. Reload your brush as needed. Using the dirty brush reload the Snow White half of the brush and stipple Snow White artistsclub.com 5

6 into the highlighted areas to deepen the highlight. (Note the pattern photo for placement.) Float shade Asphaltum under the mustache and mouth, and around Santa s gloves and into the darker shaded areas of the beard. Using the 1/4" comb begin adding the hair to the beard and mustache by using thinned down Asphaltum and washing paint starting at the mustache and mouth moving down to the lower portions of the beard and outer edges of the mustache making sure to curve your lines as you apply the paint. Remember curving your lines as you paint begins to develop the look of a curved surface. Work from light to dark developing the look of the beard slowly using multiple layers. I used the 1/8" rake on the mustache using the same paint application that was described above. Clean your comb brush and load with thinned down Snow White and using the same technique that was used to shade the beard begin layering the highlights in the beard. This will take multiple coats. It may be necessary to touch up some of your shaded areas in the beard with Asphaltum at this time. Using a SL add additional detail with Snow White. Using a SL line the hair with Snow White, line shade with Fawn and Asphaltum following the contours of the hair as shown in the line art and pattern photo. FINISHING Outline the detail with the Micron Permanent Black Marker. (Note the pattern photo for placement.) Spray varnish and enjoy. 6 artistsclub.com
