11 About the Authors Paul Munford is a self confessed and unrepentant CAD geek. Paul spent eight years on the tools as a self employed scenery designer and builder (all drawings done by hand!) before moving into the construction industry as a draftsman. Paul has been using Autodesk Inventor for ten years to design high-end fitted furniture and joinery. Paul is a member of the Autodesk Expert Elite and writes a CAD blog called Cadsetterout.com. In his spare time Paul writes for AUGIworld and D3D magazine. Paul recently joined Graitec, a UK-based Autodesk VAR where he has earned his Inventor professional certification and become an Autodesk Certified Instructor. Paul strongly believes that your CAD software shouldn t limit your creativity or productivity, and spends much of his time helping people to get to grips with CAD so that they can move beyond the picks and clicks and spend their time designing not CAD ing. For the last three years, Paul has been a speaker at Autodesk University. If you see him there, go and say Hi. He s looking forward to meeting you, or find him on Paul Normand has been using CAD for so long, he remembers when AutoCAD came on a giant floppy disk and computers were big, heavy, and not very powerful. Prior to the 1999 release, Paul was one of the early alpha testers for Inventor, then code named Rubicon. As a mechanical designer, Paul honed his sheet metal and design chops creating high tech lab equipment. He then moved into the reseller channel selling, supporting, and training Autodesk products. Paul also founded the Portland Oregon area Inventor users group and taught Inventor classes at local community colleges. For the past eight years, Paul has been part of the Autodesk Learning Experience and User Experience teams. 29 Introduction The Autodesk Inventor program was introduced in 1999 as an ambitious 3D parametric modeler. It was based not on the familiar Autodesk AutoCAD software programming architecture but instead on a separate foundation that would provide the room needed to grow into the fully featured modeler it is now, more than a decade later. Autodesk Inventor 2016 continues the development of Autodesk Inventor with improved modeling, drawing, assembly, and visualization tools. Some readers will find this book works best for them as a desktop reference, whereas others will use it primarily for the step by step tutorials. With this in mind, I ve worked to shape the pages of this book with a mix of reference material, instructional steps, and tips and hints from the real world. Beginner Autodesk Inventor users who are making the move from traditional 2D CAD design to Autodesk Inventor These readers might have experience with AutoCAD and will possess an understanding of basic design and engineering concepts as well as a desire to improve their skill set and stay competitive in the marketplace. Intermediate Autodesk Inventor users who are self taught or have gone through formal Autodesk Inventor training during their company s initial implementation of Autodesk Inventor, and who are looking for more information on a specific module within Autodesk Inventor.
