1 AIR FORCE LACROSSE Athletic Communications 2169 Field House Dr. USAF Academy, CO Phone: (719) GoAirForceFalcons.com Falcons open season at No. 18 Navy, Feb. 6 Air Force is in its first season in the Southern Conference This Week Air Force (0-0), receiving votes in the Cascade/Maverik national media poll, opens the 2016 season against service academy rival No. 18 Navy (0-0) on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 11:30 am ET in Annapolis, Md. It will be the season opener for both teams. Falcons in the SoCon After one season as an independent, the Falcons are back in a conference. Air Force joins the Southern Conference for the 2016 season, joining Bellarmine, Furman, High Point, Jacksonville, Mercer, Richmond and VMI. Last season, Air Force faced six of the seven other teams from the SoCon. The only team the Falcons did not play was Richmond. Air Force was 5-1 against SoCon teams with wins over Bellarmine, Furman, Jacksonville, Mercer and VMI and a loss on the road by one goal at High Point, the eventual tournament champions. SoCon Preseason Poll Defending tournament champion High Point was narrowly selected as the favorite to claim the 2016 Southern Conference men s lacrosse title, as voted by all eight of the league s coaches. High Point nabbed four first-place votes and 46 total points to take the top spot in the poll. Richmond garnered four first-place votes and 45 points, after going 11-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play in League newcomer Air Force collected 38 points and claimed the No. 3 spot in the preseason poll after finishing last season with an 8-7 record as an independent. Mercer was fourth (31), Bellarmine was fifth (23), Furman (18) was sixth, Jacksonville (16) was seventh and VMI was eighth (7). SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team Air Force sophomore Chris Walsch was named to the SoCon preseason all-conference team. Last season, Walsch led the team with 37 goals and 55 points. He ranked 30th in the nation in goals and 37th in points. His 2.47 goals per game were the fifth most in the nation by a freshman. He scored at least one point in 14 of the 15 games and had three or more points in nine games. He scored five goals in a game twice (Marist and VMI) and had a career high six goals against Jacksonville. Air Force got off to a slow start, losing its first three games, but the Falcons finished strong. The Falcons won eight of 10, including a season-best four-game winning streak that included wins over Jacksonville (18-5), Bellarmine (11-9), Mercer (10-7) and Robert Morris (10-9). Five of Air Force s seven losses came by two goals or less with four of them by one goal. The other two losses came to No. 3 Duke and No. 1 Denver. Of Air Force s seven losses, four came against teams ranked in the top 20 in the final regular season USILA poll: No. 3 Denver, No. 4 Duke, No. 19 Navy and No. 20 Marist. High Point, another of Air Force s one-goal losses, won the Southern Conference and earned the league s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Chris Walsch, a sophomore this season, led the team with 37 goals and 55 points this season. Keith Dreyer (graduated) led the team with 21 assists, was second with 44 points and tied for second with 23 goals. The Coach Head coach Eric Seremet (North Carolina, 1992) is in his eighth season as the Falcons head coach. He has a school and career record of Seremet came to the Academy in 2002 and spent seven seasons as an assistant coach under Fred Acee. The 2014 USILA Division I Coach of the Year, Seremet led Air Force to its best season ever in 2014, as the Falcons compiled an 11-6 overall record and secured their highest win total since The Falcons clinched a share of the regular season conference title before going on to win the ECAC Tournament title, earning their first NCAA bid since Air Force defeated Richmond in the NCAA play-in game, capturing its first NCAA tournament win in program history. Series vs. Navy Air Force and Navy will meet for the eighth time and the Mids hold a 6-1 lead in the series that began in Six of the seven games have been played in Annapolis, Md. The teams met last season at Falcon Stadium and Navy held off the Falcons for a 9-8 win. Navy won the first five games in the series: 19-6 in 1979; 19-3 in 1994; 10-7 in 1998; 16-4 in 1999; and 17-2 in Air Force s only win in the series came in Annapolis in 2003, an 8-6 victory when Navy was ranked 12th in the nation. 3 2016 AIR FORCE LACROSSE --- PAGE 3 Last Season vs. Navy Air Force and Navy met for the just the seventh time in the history of both programs and the first time ever at the Air Force Academy on May 2, 2015 at Falcon Stadium. In a thrilling game that came right down to the wire, Navy defeated Air Force, 9-8. Navy s Colin Flounlacker scored the game-winner with 39 seconds left to lift the Midshipmen to a the victory. Navy opened the scoring just 1:42 into the game when Jack Ray scored for a 1-0 lead. Air Force answered at 10:46 when freshman Chris Walsch made a short pass across the top of the crease to Keith Dreyer who scored his 22nd of the season. Navy then scored the next three goals as Kevin Wendel gave the Mids a 2-1 lead at 6:51 of the first quarter. The Midshipmen scored two goals early in the second quarter as Gabe Voumard scored man-up at 14:44 and Ray scored even-strength at 13:36 for a 4-1 lead. The Falcons cut the deficit to 4-2 when Keith Dreyer controlled the ball behind the net and fed James Burke, who cut down the middle. Burke scored his 10th of the season at the 10:14 mark. Ray put the Mids up 5-3 with his third of the game at 9:13. With Navy controlling the ball in its offensive end, Falcon senior Kyle O Brien forced a turnover, picked up the ground ball and sprinted the length of the field. O Brien then found Dreyer on the left side who cut the Mids lead to 5-3 at 6:05. Leading 5-3 at the half, Ray scored two goals early in the third quarter for Navy. His first came at 13:54 from Dave Little. After Falcon sophomore Austin Smith scored, Ray found the back of the net again, his fifth of the game, at 12:28 for a 7-4 Navy lead. The Falcons scored the next two goals of the game. Freshman Nick Hruby ran in from the left side and scored his 23rd of the season with a shot from just outside the crease at 7:40. Burke s second of the game, and 11th of the season, cut the Mids lead to 7-6 at 3:24 of the third quarter. With one second left in the third, Navy s Patrick Keena scored for an 8-6 lead. Late in the fourth quarter, Air Force battled back to tie the game. Christopher Allen took a feed from Smith and scored at 4:36. Eighteen seconds later, the Falcons tied the game when Walsch cut to the middle, took a pass from Dreyer and netted his team-leading 37th of the season at 4:16. With 39 seconds left, Flounlacker netted the eventual game-winner to give the Mids a 9-8 lead. After winning the ensuing faceoff, the Falcons called a timeout. With five seconds left, Allen gained the center of the field, 12 yards out, and fired a low shot that was saved by Mid goalie John Connors. Navy won the ground ball as time expired. Air Force outshot Navy, 36-27, including an 11-4 advantage in the fourth quarter. Navy won 32 ground balls while Air Force had 29. Each team won nine faceoffs. Navy was 1-for-2 on extra-man opportunities while AFA was 0-for-4. What s Missing From This Picture The Air Force lacrosse team bid farewell to nine seniors from the 2015 team. The class helped lead the Falcons to the ECAC Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament win in The nine seniors: Tom Burgess, James Burke, Keith Dreyer, Davis Gunter, Nate Hruby, Parker Jackson, Jacob Kazar, Warren Kuhn and Kyle O Brien combined to win 32 games, the most by any senior class in 23 years and the most in the modern era (since 1994). Between the Pipes Senior Doug Gouchoe started the first 13 games last season, before missing the final game due to injury. He had a.528 saves percentage, an 8.62 goalsagainst average and 133 total saves on the season. He made a then-season high 14 saves, while allowing just six goals, to lead the Falcons to a 13-6 win over Canisius, Feb. 22. He made a season high 15 saves vs. Vermont in the triple overtime loss to the Catamounts. He ranked 19th in the nation in goals-against average (8.62), 31st in saves percentage (.528) and 36th in saves per game (9.55). Gouchoe s 133 saves were just seven shy of cracking the top 10 in the modern era at Air Force. Gouchoe s 8.62 GAA is the fifth best in the modern era at Air Force. Walsch in the Record Book Chris Walsch s 37 goals last season tie as the second most, and the most ever by a freshman, in the Air Force Academy modern era (since 1994 when Air Force joined the GWLL, a full Division I conference). Chris MacAuley also had 37 goals in Mike Crampton set the record with 48 goals in Walsch s 55 points are the third most in the modern era and the most ever by a freshman. Crampton set the record with 66 points in Mike Murphy is second on the list with 60 in Top Returners In addition to Walsch, the Falcons return four of the top five scorers. Walsch led the team with 37 goals and 55 points. Nick Hruby was third on the team with 29 points on 23 goals and six assists. Christopher Allen was fourth on the team last season with 21 points ( ) and Austin Smith was fifth with 17 points (9-8-17). The only top five scorer from last season who is not returning is Keith Dreyer (graduated) who was second on the team with 44 points. On the Horizon After the Navy game, Air Force opens the home schedule on Saturday, Feb. 13, against the defending national champion Denver Pioneers at 1 p.m. MT at Falcon Stadium.
