Links to badges: ap reader (8) Links to a festival/notable date: Programme zones covered: Outdoor & dventure quipment/resource Compasses, copies of printouts below, pencils, chalk needed: (indoor) or ent pegs and string (outdoor) Programme detail Introduction and opening ceremony (10 minutes) fter the Grand Howl or other opening ceremony, hold up a compass. sk them what it is and what it does. fter many imaginative answers, hopefully someone will say It points North. xplain that this is all a compass does and that they will have to do all the rest themselves to use it to navigate. sk if they know the points of the compass.his follows nicely into the game. ctive game (10 minutes) N,,,W: ssign one end of the hall as North. (If possible, the correct one, it will help later). sk the cubs to run to each compass point to ensure they know where they are. Get faster and add in North-ast etc. sk them to hop, skip, walk backwards etc. to the next one. lthough this can be a knockout game, it is often better to keep threatening it and pointing out to the last person in that they could be out next time. ain activity/activities (50 minutes or 1 hour) Introduce compasses and show them how to set a bearing and align the compass. Work in pairs small groups, each with a compass. sk them to point West, North-ast etc. Work in pairs small groups. sk them to stand up and give some directions (3 paces North, 3 paces West) Watch for groups that are obviously not going the right way and help! ctivity 1: ini-orienteering (20 mins) Cut out and place the nine letter cards on the floor equal distance from each other and as far apart as the hall allows. his can be done outside in good weather! Fix with tape. he letters must be correctly aligned as shown, even if this does not suit the orientation of the hall! C D O N Give each group a mini-orienteering sheet and a pencil/marker. ark a different start number for each group. sk them to try to complete the words and then move onto the next question. xplain that if they get stuck or confused, they need to return to the last point and try again. ctivity 2: Compass Pictures (20 mins) Give each six/group a compass and a copy of the picture instructions. his can be done outdoors with pegs and string or indoors with chalk. If they follow the instructions correctly,

2 they should finish where they started and have a picture (boat, star). leader with each group is very helpful. he boat is easier and every group can do the same one!! Lighthouses Game (10 minutes) plit the pack in two. Half are ships (Go to end of hall and out on blindfolds). he other half are rocks and must spread out around the hall, sitting down. One leader is the lighthouse and positions himself at the far end of the hall to the ships. he lighthouse calls out WOO WOO to guide the ships. he rocks must go WIH,WIH to warn the ships. he ships must try to get to the lighthouse safely. If a rock sinks them, they become a shipwreck, stay where they are and also go WIH,WIH. When all the ships have made it or sunk, swap teams.
