1 Group leader instructions This pack of ART CARDS contains quick-paced and fun drawing activities for the Gallery at Manchester Museum. This self-guided resource allows students to produce large amounts of observational drawings direct from the museum collection. Instructions: Up to 30 students to each pack Students to work in pairs Please ask a member of our Visitor Services staff if you require any more assistance Materials: A4 white drawing paper A4 black drawing paper 2B pencils Chalk Masking tape Clipboards
2 Mirror pattern Draw a pattern on half of your page. Fold your paper in half as a guide. Then draw the pattern as it would appear in a mirror on the other side of your page. Fill your page Where? Cloth and Clothing case (Navajo Blankets) Pencil on paper. 10 minutes. A pattern is a set of recurring shapes or lines, which repeat in a predictable or unpredictable way.
3 Non-stop pattern drawing Find a pattern and draw this without taking your pencil off your paper once. It helps if you look mostly at the pattern whilst drawing. Fill your page Where? You can flip, rotate and mirror your shapes whilst making your design. Where? 6 Drawing with your eyes closed Look at an object for 20 seconds, then close your eyes and draw it. Include the shape and pattern/texture in it Fill your page Where? Out Of Clay case Chalk on black paper. 3 minutes.

8 Drawing light. ART CARD Shade in the areas of where the light hits an object. You should have no definite lines on your drawing, just shaded areas Where? Masks and Carvings case (West African case) or Out Of Clay case Materials, Tips and Time. Chalk on black paper. 2 minutes.
9 Drawing close-up ART CARD Draw a close up section of an object Use a viewfinder and draw what is inside the frame of it (instructions at the bottom of the card). Fill your page Where? Masks and Carvings. Pencil on paper. 10 minutes. Cut a square from the middle of a piece of paper to form a viewfinder
10 Texture lines ART CARD Draw a line across your page, representing the texture of an object Look across the surface of the object, moving your pencil up and down as the texture changes. It should look like a heartbeat monitor squiggle. Where? Arms and Armory case Pencil on paper. 5 minutes. Texture is the visual and especially tactile quality of a surface.

12 Profile drawing ART CARD Draw the profile of an object (from the side). Fill your page. Where? Masks and Carvings Chalk on black paper. 10 minutes.
13 Shapes inside shapes Draw the outline of an object, filling your page with this outline. Draw another object inside this in the same way. Continue until you have drawn 6 objects inside one another Where? Out of Clay case Chalk on black paper. 10 minutes.
14 Drawing with tape ART CARD Draw the outside form of your object with tape. You can either rip up the tape and draw it in sections, or draw the shape with one long piece. Fill your page Where? Masks and Carvings case Tape on black paper. 10 minutes
15 Curate a case ART CARD Create a new museum case Draw a grid on your paper to create nine squares on your paper. Pick objects from all over the gallery and fill you grid with drawings of them. You may want to give your case a theme (scary, weird, etc). Where? All cases Pencil on paper. 10 minutes
16 Describing yourself through an object Objects in this gallery tell us how people from all over the world have lived. Draw an object that best describes how you live today Draw the first object that comes into your head! Where? All cases Chalk on black paper. 5 minutes
