1 TAKE-AWAY RESOURCE: PICTURING RIGHTS Curriculum Themes Rights and responsibilities Grades K to 8 Global Themes Interdependence Social Justice Timing Objectives Introduce or reinforce learning of children s rights and the Convention. Materials Refer to the Convention Collect chart paper, markers and masking tape. Activity Explain that this activity will act as a fun and energizing introduction to some of the articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (the Convention). Divide the group into teams of 4 to 6 participants. Distribute markers, chart paper and masking tape to each group. Ask each team to tape their chart paper to the wall and sit gathered around it. Explain the activity as outlined below. Make it clear that this is a race. Then carry out the activity. Position yourself at the farthest point from the teams. Use the selected children s rights in the list below. They are the easiest rights to illustrate. When you call for the first team member, one member from each team will run to you. Whisper the first right to these team members. They will return to their teams and draw the children s right on the chart paper. The other team members will guess which right is being drawn. When the right has been guessed correctly, another team member will run to you for the next right. The game will end when one of the teams has guessed all of the rights correctly. Materials At least one set of the 42 Rights cards cut out with the correct article number (1 to 42) written on the back of each one. Numbers 1 to 42 each written on a small square piece of paper one number per square. Note The following instructions assume a group size of 7 students per set of 42 cards. Adjust the number of card sets you use and the number of cards each student receives based on your group size. Activity Explain that this activity will provide an opportunity to become familiar with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in a relaxed and fun way. Choose one volunteer to be the bingo caller. Hand out six cards to each student, placed face down. The bingo caller begins the game. He/she shuffles the 42 numbered squares of paper and draws one. The number is called out, and the players who have that numbered card turn over their playing cards revealing the corresponding children s right. The first player to turn over all their cards calls bingo. They then read aloud each number and the corresponding children s right to have the caller confirm their win. Collect, shuffle and redistribute playing cards between games so that players are exposed to different articles in the Convention with each new game. Adaptation Use the Enlarged Rights Cards or the Rights, Wants and Needs Cards (with the want cards removed) for younger grades. Have students place them face up and then flip them over when they are called. The first one to turn all their cards over wins.
