K-2 Building Fluency Using Break Apart

Kindergarten Shake and Spill to 10 Put 10 counters in a cup. Shake your cup. Spill counters onto a mat. How many counters are on the image? How many counters are off the image?

Kindergarten How many more to 10? Roll a die and cover that many spaces on the ten frame. Then think, How many more do we need to make ten? Fill that many spots on the ten frame.

Kindergarten Make 5 Roll a die and cover that many spaces on the five frame. Then think, How many more do we need to make five? Fill that many spots on the five frame.

First Grade 7 up Put 7 cards face up in a row - put the rest of the cards in a pile off to the side. Take turns finding 2 cards that go together to make 10. When no combinations can be made, put out 7 new cards. Continue playing until all cards have been matched.

First Grade Race to 100 Roll the die and call out the number rolled. Place that number of counters on your gameboard. Think How many more do I need to make 10? Continue playing until you reach 100!

Second Grade Mystery 10 Shuffle cards, and remove one card.. but don t look at that card. Place remaining cards face up in an array. Take turns making combinations to 10. If you choose a card with a 10, just say 10+0=10. You will be left with one card at the end and your mystery card. Solve the mystery combination!!

Second Grade Pathway to 120 Students take turns rolling a die. If they roll a 1, they move forward 1 space. If they roll a 10, they move ahead 10 spaces. Color in each space you land on until you get to 120. Look at your path when you finish and see whose path was the shortest.

SALUTE Materials: Number Cards, Dominoes/Dot Cards, Ten Frames

Kakooma starts with a single puzzle: in a group of numbers, find the number that is the sum of two others. Sounds easy, right? Sometimes it is, but other times the answer is right in front of you and you just can t see it.

Funny Numbers with Measurement The Greg Tang Math game Funny Numbers asks students to practice addition and subtraction of lengths, weights, time and more!

Funny Numbers Going beyond adding with Base-10 Customary measurement is tricky for many of our kiddos because it not a base 10 counting system instead it is base-12 (length), base-16 (weight), base-60 (time), etc.

You can also split your content

Let s Try It Out! Choose one of the following: Length Time Weight Volume

Hands-On Mental Math Activities for 3-5 Grade 3- Salute TLW use addition and/or subtraction to solve basic facts. Materials: deck of cards, no jokers, 3 players The game is called Salute! This is because the third player evenly deals out the deck of cards between the other two players. They count, 1,2,3, Salute! As they say, Salute! they bring the first card in their piles to their foreheads, without looking at it, in a kind of salute. Then, the two players look at one another s foreheads as Player 3 adds or subtracts the numbers. Player 3 says, The sum is or The difference is. (This is great for that vocabulary that kids don t otherwise get.) Then the two players try to be the first to guess their own number by adding or subtracting the other player s number from/to the sum or difference. If they do it correctly, they take the other player s card and the process repeats. The winner is the one with the most cards at the end. That player can then become Player 3.

Hands-On Mental Math Activities for 3-5 Grade 4 - Bacon Players write BACON on paper. There are 5 rounds, one for each letter of the word. Players will mentally add up the rolls. The goal is to get the highest sum for each round. At any time during any round a player may choose to sit down. Roll the die to determine the BACON number. All players stand at the start of each round. Roll the die for the B round. Roll is again and players mentally add the two numbers together. Continue to roll until all have sat for the round. Start the next round.

Hands-On Mental Math Activities for 3-5 Grade 5 - Stink Eye Player 1 rolls the. If a stink eye comes up, roll again. Player one records the two numbers under Game 1 Roll 1. (this can be addition or multiplication). Player 1 decides to play it safe or risk getting the stink eye. Player may roll up to 4 times in each game. Player 2 goes next. Play continues until the players have completed six games. Each player adds the total scores from all six games. The player with the highest total wins!

Identify and Simplify games consist of 3 hands. The objective is to identify 3 matching cards in each hand as quickly as possible. Compare and Calculate games consist of 5 hands. The objective is to choose the correct fraction out of 3 choices. To select a card, simply click and highlight it. If your answer is correct, a new hand will be shown. Incorrect answers are not accepted and add a 15 second penalty to your final time.
