Earn your Inventor Badge at the GSLC Materials Needed: Circle template (attached, Source: Inventor Badge, Girl s Guide to Girl Scouting, VTK) Assorted, washed and cut vegetables (for dipping) Goldfish crackers Paper plates and napkins one per girl Paper cups- one per girl Spoons- one per girl Sour cream Spices- Suggestions: ranch dressing powder, garlic, paprika, lemon pepper, hot sauce, parsley. etc Wooden paint stirring sticks, free from any paint store, (2 for each girl) Rubber bands (4 for each girl) 1 piece of paper (one for each girl) Small trash bags Rubber gloves Prepare in Advance: Review the badge overview, in print, or online at Girl Scout Badge Explorer Circle Template copies (one for each girl) Gather and purchase materials (A troop parent can help collect items in advance) Prepare kitchen for dip recipe creation Steps Step 1 Warm-up the Inventor s Mind Inspire your inner-inventor while watching the INSPIRE video with Edie Widder! What giant creature did she discover? How did she use her curiosity and her inventor s mind? Inventors warm up their minds so they can be creative! One way to do that is to find different ways to use things. Use the Think in Circles activity from the Inventor Badge in the Girl s Guide to Girl Scouting (attached) and also available on VTK -- to come up with fun and different drawings you can make from circles. Girls will take 5 minutes to draw as many as they can. Ready? Go! Step 2 There are many ways to solve the same problem! Girl Scouts of Orange County, Rev. 8/1/2017 GSLC Girl Scout Brownie Badge Connections 1
For this problem, we have a very bland dip recipe that needs spicing up! Can you find ways to create interesting dip recipes from plain sour cream? Invent your own dip recipe Give each girl a small cup of plain sour cream to start her recipe dip. Each girl may choose two or three spices to flavor her dip After stirring up her recipe, each girl can taste a little from her spoon to decide if she needs more of one of the ingredients. Discuss: What is unique about your snack? If you could start over, what would you change? What else could be an option that we did not use? Enjoy goldfish crackers or veggies with your unique recipe dip, Step 3 What is needed? In order for our beaches, and our Leadership Center, to stay nice enjoyable for many Girl Scouts for year to come, it has certain needs. Brainstorm all of the things this beach needs to stay nice. Discuss how an inventor would meet those needs. Step 4 Every beach needs someone to take care it! Some people may not like pick up other people s trash to clean the beach, but sometimes, it is needed! To solve this problem, you can invent your own trash grabber with just a few simple items! Fold a piece of paper into a small square that fits between the straight ends of two paint sticks o Secure with rubber bands. This will create the hinge part of your trash grabber o Wrap more rubber bands around each handle ends of the paint sticks. This will create a grabbing surface for your trash grabber tongs. Step 5 Share your invention Show off your Trash Grabber and lead a beach clean-up! Set the parameters of the beach clean-up with the girls (ie: do not pass the 18 th street sign to the left, and the rock breakwater wall to the right) Scan the area for any dangerous items before sending girls out to the beach Girl Scouts of Orange County, Rev. 8/1/2017 GSLC Girl Scout Brownie Badge Connections 2
Girl Scouts of Orange County, Rev. 8/1/2017 GSLC Girl Scout Brownie Badge Connections 3
Earn your Outdoor Art Creator Badge at the GSLC Materials: Beach Scavenger Hunt (attached to this guide) Index cards Pens Bucket Painters spatulas Measuring cups and spoons Funnels Small flags Camera Lego people Small Toy animals and people Newspaper Tissue paper in various colors Scissors Diluted White glue Wax paper Paint brush Double-sided tape Ocean animal templates Prepare in Advance: Review the badge overview, in print, or online at Girl Scout Badge Explorer Copies of Beach Scavenger Hunt (attached); one for each 2-3 girl team Prepare craft area and materials Steps: Step 1: Photographic Art - Be a Nature photographer - Mini world on film Be inspired by theater design with the INSPIRE video with Angela Calin Distribute sandcastle building materials evenly and head out to the sand Have girls design sand castles using the toys and figurines as if they were designing miniature theatrical scenes Have girls capture their sand castle scenes on camera in photos or video of their mini world sand castle scenes Girl Scouts of Orange County, Rev. 8/1/2017 GSLC Girl Scout Brownie Badge Connections 4
Step 2: Observational Art - Go on a nature detective walk - Beach Scavenger Hunt Take the girls out to the beach and divide into teams of 2-3 girls Distribute the beach scavenger hunt cards and pens Walk along the sand to look for different items on your list Check off found items Step 3: Movement Art - Play a nature dance game - Ocean Dance parade First, on index cards, write names or draw pictures of animals or insects that have fun movements - like how a snake slithers, a deer leaps, and a grasshopper hops. Then go outside with a friend. Each of you takes a flashcard and moves like the animal shown on the card. Can you guess what animal your friend is? Can she guess yours? Step 4: Create your Art! Make something - Make sun catchers as a gift to take home Use diluted white glue to stick the pieces of tissue together into a collage. Cut various colors of tissue paper into small pieces. Lay a sheet of wax paper on a flat surface. Brush on some liquid starch or diluted white glue (2 parts glue to 1 part water) onto a portion of the wax paper. Spread the starch or glue into a thin layer. Place a few overlapping pieces of tissue onto the area with glue. Continue adding tissue paper pieces until you've made a collage that almost covers the entire wax paper Allow the collage to dry completely. For faster drying sun catchers, use clear contact paper to adhere the tissue squares. Cut shapes out of the tissue paper collage. You can cut directly or pre-draw the shapes onto the tissue prior to cutting. Girl Scouts of Orange County, Rev. 8/1/2017 GSLC Girl Scout Brownie Badge Connections 5
