1 Ele Challenge 1 st Snowdonia Senior Section (actual size 7cm / 3 ) Together We Can Skills for Life project and trip to India August 2014 to work on our project. Helping to improve the lives of the slum dwellers in Pune This Challenge is for all sections including adults and Trefoil Guild. You need to complete a minimum of 6 challenges to earn your badge. Have fun! 1. Play a memory game - Elephants have amazing memories elephants never forget 2. Make a memo pad with a picture of an elephant on the front cover 3. The sound of an elephant is refered to as trumpet - try playing a real trumpet 4. Make a paper trumpet 5. Naughty Elephants Squirt Water (this is one rhyme that helps you to remember the points of a compass) - play a game using a compass or using the compass points 6. Make some elephant skittles from used plastic drink bottles and card - try to knock them over by squirting water from a bottle 7. Make an elephant pinata 8. Visit the elephants in the zoo 9. Read Rudyard Kiplings story How the Elephant Got His Trunk 10. Read an Elmer the Elephant story 11. Watch Disney s Dumbo or Jungle Book 12. Make an elephant fridge magnet 13. Make an elephant paper plate mask 14. Find out about Ganesh, one of the Hindu Gods. 15. Make an Elmer the Patchwork Elephant collage using coloured tissue paper 16. Play a relay game of Pass the Peanut wearing socks on your hands to make a trunk. 17. Push a peanut along the floor with your nose - who can do it fastest? 18. Make an elephant keyring 19. 2 31. Make a Pink Elephant cocktail using - mix 225 ml pure orange juice, 225 ml cranberry juice and 100ml lemon juice with1 litre sparkling water (serves 4 to 6) 32. Play guess what objects are in the bag - wearing a sock on your hand for a trunk 33. Write an elephant poem 34. Make an elephant joke book 35. Elephants love eating fruit - make some fruit kebabs 36. Make a origami elephant 37. Elephants can lift very heavy things - learn how to lift something safely with your back straight and legs bent 38. Elephants enjoy painting - try painting a picture holding the brush in your mouth as though it is your trunk 39. Raise funds for your unit or special project by having a white elephant stall 40. Elephants ears help them to keep cool but they also have very acute hearing. Make a tin can telephone so that you can whisper a message to your friend the other side of the room. Punch holes in the bottom of 2 empty food cans and attach the 2 together with a length of string; one holds a can to her ear whilst the other whispers into the other can. 41. Cotton Reel Elephant Copy the template onto card. Cut out and glue to either end of a cotton reel. Glue a piece of felt or braid over its back. 42. Milk Bottle Money Box Use a small plastic milk bottle (a bigger one will do) Cover the bottom half with green paper. Add eyes. Mark legs and ears with permanent marker. 43. Milk Bottle Elephant. You need : an empty 6 litre plastic milk bottle, a pair of large google eyes, some felt and some sequins, braid etc to decorate the felt. Cut off the top half of the bottle - along top of green paper as marked on Money Box - then cut off neck of bottle. Cut out semicircles to create 4 legs. Cut a large pair of ears out of the remainder of the bottle. Make a slot between the neck of the bottle and the elephant s trunk and slot ears in. Stick on the googly eyes. Decorate a piece of felt to cover its back.

3 44. Egg Carton Elephants You can find directions for this craft online at Danielle s Place of Crafts and Activities 45. Elephant Biscuits Dough : Mix 250g softened butter and 140g caster sugar in a large bowl with a wooden spoon, then add 1 egg yolk and 2 teasp. vanilla extract, beat to combine. Sift in 300g plain flour and stir until the mixture is well combined you might need to get your hands in at the end to give everything a really good mix and press the dough together. Roll your biscuit dough to ¼ thick. Cut into 2 cirlces. Cut half of the circles into 3 sections to make ears and trunk and assemble elephant head. Use currants for eyes. 46. Sugar Elephants 1 ½ cups of caster sugar 1 dessert spoon melted butter 2 tablespoons of milk 1 tablespoon icing sugar Warm the milk and pour into mixing bowl. Slowly stir the other ingredients into the milk. Mix them well together with a wooden spoon. Now knead the mix with your fingers until it is well combined. Sift a little icing sugar onto a board. Turn the mix out onto the board and shape into elephants. Use choc. drops or silver balls for their eyes.

4 47. Try this game: Choose someone to be the elephant, all say the rhyme whilst she circulates around the room. She then chooses someone to join her by calling Hey, you! and pointing to the chosen person. She now places a hand on the shoulder of the new elephant so that the new elephant is in front. Continue with rhyme and choosing a new elephant until everyone is joined together. (Make it more difficult by the new elephant placing her trunk between her legs and holding hands with the one behind) A little elephant went out to play On a spider s web one day She had so much fun She called for another elephant to come Hey, you! 48. Kirigami Elephant -Japanese art of paper cutting * Fold a square piece of a paper in half and in half again then fold in half diagonally. Draw a picture of an elephant on one side then cut it out making sure you leave the fold on the back leg, tail and edge of trunk. Open out and you should have a circle of elephants. Use it to decorate a greetings card, place mat, book cover or something similar.
