MATERIALS Blank card, one per family member Colored pencils, crayons or markers GET STARTED Affirmations are used to create a positive culture by teaching us to be supportive of one another. In the Spider-ManTM: Into the Spider-Verse film, the different characters encourage each other to take a leap of faith and trust in their own abilities. This helps them achieve great things together throughout the film! Your family will work together to each create an Affirmation Card that describes an ability you have. 4 ANYONE CAN WEAR THE MASK FAMILY Activity 2 30 minutes TIMEFRAME This activity may be completed before or after seeing Spider-ManTM: Into the Spider-Verse. MATERIALS Blank card, one per family member Colored pencils, crayons or markers GET STARTED With your family, discuss the film s theme: Anyone can wear the mask. What does it mean? Help your children understand that the theme underscores that anyone, regardless of race, age, physical appearance, etc. can help make a difference! Once your family understands the theme, it s comic time! Each family member should take a piece of paper and fold in three times at random angles. This will create a panelstyle template of varying sizes, just like you see in the film! Example: 4

5 CONTINUED... ANYONE CAN WEAR THE MASK Read the directions below aloud and then get started: 1. In front of you is a blank comic, just like the creators of Spider-ManTM once had. As a family, think of an experience you all shared together where you helped someone else or each other. Maybe it was celebrating a special event, adopting a pet, volunteering, or participating in a fundraiser. Once you have an idea, consider how your experience could be told as a comic, and draw the first panel of your comic. 2. Pass your comic strip clock-wise when everyone has finished their first panel. It is now your job to continue the comic strip that your family member began. You may not ask them about their idea! Look at their first panel, remember the share experience, and then create the second panel. 3. Continue to pass the comic strips around your family, drawing one panel at a time. If you run out of family members, it s okay to repeat! Just make sure that you never draw two panels in a row. 4. When you get to the final panel, make sure you think about how to wrap up the story before you start to draw! 5. Once the comics are complete, share them with each other. Ask yourselves: Did each of you share your story in the same way? How are they similar? How are they unique? Did your comic strip stay true to your vision as it was passed around or did it go in an entirely new direction? 5

6 INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE FAMILY Activity 3 45 minutes TIMEFRAME Complete this activity after seeing Spider-Man TM : Into the Spider-Verse. MATERIALS Box, about the size of a cereal box White or colored paper Crayons, colored pencils or markers Tape or glue Scissors Film stills Outline of Spider-Man GET STARTED With your family, look through the Spider- Man TM drawings provided on the following pages. These are called perspective drawings: They capture how Spider-Man TM sees the world from his own eyes. Discuss the following with your family: Do you remember seeing these scenes in the movie? What do you notice about these drawings? Do they look flat or life-like? Your family is going to choose one perspective drawing and use it to create a 3D Spider-Verse so you can really see what Spider-Man TM sees as he looks around in this scene. Then carefully cut or unfold the rest of the box so its inside panels lay flat and are facing up towards you.

(If your box is large, you may need to attach two or more pieces of paper together for one side.) Don t attach them to the box yet! 5. Now it s time to create Spider-Man s TM world! Study the drawing.

8 CONTINUED... INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 1. Agree on a perspective drawing to bring to life. 2. Grab a box and examine it. Think about how you could use the perspective drawing to recreate Spider-Man s TM world on the inside of this box! 3. Carefully cut the top off the box and recycle it. Then carefully cut or unfold the rest of the box so its inside panels lay flat and are facing up towards you. Make as few cuts as possible so you can still put the box back together with a little tape! 4. Take five pieces of paper and cut them so that each one is the size of one side of the box. (If your box is large, you may need to attach two or more pieces of paper together for one side.) Don t attach them to the box yet! 5. Now it s time to create Spider-Man s TM world! Study the drawing. What does he see in front of him? Behind him? To the right? To the left? What does the ground look like? These are the five different drawings that your family will recreate. 6. Decide which family member will draw each side. Before you begin, be sure to discuss the following: Perspective: How can you each make sure your drawing shows what this space really looks like? Scale: About how much larger or smaller is the box from the original picture? Everyone s drawings should be similarly proportioned (either larger or smaller) to make sure they stay true to the original picture! 2D versus 3D: Are you going to draw in 3D like the movie or 2D like a comic? Make sure everyone agrees! Color: How are you going to color your drawings so they all look like they belongto the same Spider-Verse? 7. Once your family has completed all five sides, tape or glue your drawings onto the inside pieces of the flat box. Then tape or glue your box back together. 8. On the following page, you ll see a Spider-ManTM outline. Cut it out, and see how it fits in your Spider-Verse. If it looks too big or too small in comparison to the surroundings you created, use the outline as a model for drawing your own. Then work with your family to decide who this Spider-ManTM will be. Will it look like a member of your family? Will it be someone you ve never met? The choice is yours! Continue the Spider-Verse: Expand upon the inside of your Spider-Verse and bring it to the outside of your box as well. What would the opposite side of what you ve created look like? Design Your Own Spider-Verse: Where else could SpiderManTM exist? Create an entirely new Spider-Verse! You could use your home or your community as inspiration, or you could create a universe unlike anything you have ever seen. Brainstorm ideas with your family, grab a new box, and let your imaginations get to work. 9 9
