1 Osprey by Jordan Gaelle of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation Saturday, July 22 is our Osprey Festival at the Conservation Area at Maplewood Flats! Welcome to the 11th Osprey Festival taking place throughout the Conservation Area at Maplewood Flats. The event will feature workshops, guided walks, various

2 speakers, live music, children's entertainment, and food. We encourage all of our members to come out for this special day. This is an opportunity to come inside the Corrigan Nature House for education workshops and speakers and photography displays, wander the area for nature walks, and visit three stations at Otter Point, Osprey Point and the Mudflats. We will have participation from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, District of North Vancouver, the Wild Bird Trust Board, and many environmental groups from the region. This year's festival includes opportunities to learn about traditional Coast Salish uses of plants as we will have ethnobotanists revealing names and information about the 320 acre site. If you'd like to observe birds and other wildlife at Maplewood Flats, we will have scopes and observation stations set up at the three principal locations. Here you can observe the critters that call Maplewood Flats home, and get advice from skilled birders and naturalists who will be available to help at all of the stations. Bring a camera of your own as well if you are interested in taking part in a photography workshop! If you snap a great shot, let us know and it may be featured on our social media outlets or in future editions of the Wingspan magazine! Join us on Saturday, July 22nd for this free public event that showcases the wild birds we strive to protect here in Burrard Inlet. Wonderful folk music will be heard under the trees, with musicians with harp, cello, acoustic guitar and vocals to be enjoyed all afternoon.

Osprey Festival - Workshops 10:00-11:00: Photography workshop with Pierre Cenerelli Join veteran birder, WBT member, and photographer Pierre Cenerelli for an indoor session on photography techniques followed by an outdoor walk through Maplewood Flats where you can apply those techniques in the field. Participants will need to bring their own camera and scope. Some scopes provided. 10:00-11:00: Guided Nature Walk with Al Grass Naturalist and long time visitor to Maplewood Flats Al Grass leads a guided hike in Maplewood Flats: The Salt Marsh Secrets Revealed. Join Al to learn about importance of the salt marsh habitat found at Maplewood Flats, and the many critters that use the marsh. 11:00-11:15: Welcoming to the 11th Osprey Festival Join us as we welcome guests, dignitaries, presenters and staff to the 11th Osprey Festival. Welcomed by Carleen Thomas (Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Wild Bird Trust Secretary) as well as Irwin Oostindie (WBT President) and Jude Grass (WBT Vice-President and Education Committee Chair)

4 11:15-12:00: Preview - Vancouver International Bird Festival and 2018 International Ornithological Congress (Subject to change) We have invited Dr. Rob Butler, Founder of the first Vancouver International Bird Festival which will run in partnership with the 2018 International Ornithological Congress. We wil take this time to discuss how Maplewood Flats can play host during the festival to international guests from August 19-26, :30-12:30: Plant walk with Cease Wyss Experience Maplewood Flats from a Coast Salish worldview with ethnobotanist Cease Wyss, when she hosts a walk and workshop on Coast Salish plants and medicinal properties. 12:00-12:45: Welcoming the World! Update on the Habitat and Cultural Use Management Plan for Maplewood Flats Irwin Oostindie (WBT Board President) discusses the role the Wild Bird Trust will play in the 2018 Vancouver International Bird Festival, the 2018 International Ornithological Congress as well as invites participation to our Habitat and Cultural Use Management Plan for Maplewood Flats. 12:45-1:30: Representative of the District of North Vancouver - Maplewood North, Maplewood Area Plan, and the Conservation Area. In anticipation of development north of Dollarton Highway, the Wild Bird Trust of BC and the District of North Vancouver are discussing a plan to enhance streams in Maplewood Flats as part of the development plan. The District of North Vancouver will present their research findings and explain mitigating stressors and plans for Maplewood Flats in relation to the development of Maplewood North. 1:00-2:00: Coast Salish Plant Walk of Maplewood Flats Join Senaquila Wyss for a guided walk of Maplewood Flats, where she discusses identification techniques, edible plants and cultural significance of the diverse plants and plant communities found at Maplewood Flats.

5 1:30-2:15: Remarks from Carleen Thomas, Tsleil-Waututh Nation Relationship and Protocol Coordinator Carleen Thomas will explore the history of the Tsleil-Waututh in relation to the area surrounding Maplewood Flats, and opportunity for collaboration and friendship between the caretakers of Maplewood Flats and the surrounding area which has been stewarded for thousands of years by Coast Salish People. 2:15-2:45: Panel: Place-Based Community Engagement & Coast Salish Ecological Knowledge This panel features two speakers who strive to empower and improve their communities through ecological initiatives: Resource and Environmental Management Masters candidate Chloe Boyle will showcase her work on community based monitoring methods of urban streams, which is the focus of her study on Still Creek in Vancouver. Ecological Restoration candidate Chloe Hartley will showcase her ongoing work at Maplewood Flats, which aims to manage and conserve the ecological integrity of the highly diverse ecosystem

HAVE LUNCH WITH US! Outside of the Corrigan Nature House we have our barbecue with bison burgers and healthy foods and beverages! All proceeds support Wild Bird Trust!
