June 12-13, 2012 Pennsylvania Songbirds (2-day training; 2 locations) Central PA Date/Time/ Location: Tuesday June 12 8am-4pm; Kings Gap EE Center, Carlisle, PA Wednesday June 13 8am-4pm; Middle Creek Wildlife Mgmt Area, Kleinfeltersville, PA Description: Join the Pennsylvania Game Commission and DCNR, Kings Gap Environmental Center in exploring the world of birds. PA Songbirds is a hands-on, interdisciplinary resource for K- 12 educators. This 2-day workshop will address bird biology and ecological concepts including bird behavior, habitats, migration, nesting and research as well as how human activities affect songbirds. Wednesday will feature a field study at Middle Creek, an Important Bird Area, which is host to a variety of waterfowl, songbirds and nesting Bald Eagles. 2 June 15, 2012 WILD about OWLS Middle Creek WMA, Lebanon/Lancaster Area Date/Time: June 15, 2011 Time: 8:30am -3:30pm Location Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, Kleinfeltersville, PA Cost: No Charge Credits: Act 48 hours (dependent on length of lunch) Description: This workshop will provide teachers( from grades K-12) with the knowledge and tools to connect nocturnal raptors to the food chain. Topics include owls of PA. their natural history, identification, adaptation and habitats. In addition, conditions permitting, the observation of banding barn owls will be part of this session.this workshop includes materials and activities to help address our state Environment and Ecology Standards. June 19-20, 2012 WILD about Elk (2-day workshop) Benezette, PA Date/Time: June 19, pm 7:30 pm Dinner provided June 20, am-noon Location: Elk Country Visitor Center, 134 Homestead Drive, Benezette, PA Stipend: $50.00 stipend to off set the cost of travel and lodging Only a few spots left! Credit: Act 48 hours (depending on length of dinner and outdoor field study) Description: During this 2-day workshop, participants will work with PA Game Commission Wildlife Biologists, Wildlife Conservation Officers, Wildlife Habitat Managers and Wildlife Educators to explore elk history, elk biology, habitat management, telemetry and research. This training session includes a field study examining habitat management and several opportunities to view elk, and maybe even their calves. This workshop is designed for upper elementary/ middle/high school classroom teachers and non-formal educators who work with a variety of audiences including students and teachers. 3 June 25, 2012 Pennsylvania Songbirds Black Rock Retreat, Quarryville, PA Date/Time: June 25, am-3pm Location: Black Rock Retreat, 1345 Kirwood Pike, Quarryville, PA Cost: $6.00 Morning snack provided; Bring a Lunch (refrigerator/microwave available Credit: Act 48 hours (depending on length of lunch) Description: PA Songbirds is a state-specific, hands-on conservation education program about birds, people and the environment. During this workshop, participants will explore bird biology and natural history; examine ecological concepts such as adaption and migration; discover how songbirds sing and do a field study to ID songbirds. Participants will also be introduce to ebird, an online citizen science program teachers can use with their students to report birds on schools grounds and access graphs and real data form birders throughout the state! Join PA Game Commission and Black Roc Retreat educator for this fascinating exploration of birds. Pre-K-12 teachers. Concepts covered include exploring habitats, adaptations, limiting factor and carrying capacity, food chain and food web and making informed decisions. During this workshop participants will experience hands-on activities that help address PA Department of Education state environment and ecology standards. This workshop is for K-8 educators. 4 July 17, 2012 Pennsylvania Biodiversity Harrisburg, PA Date: 9am 3:00pm Location: PA Game Commission Headquarters, 2001 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA Cost: No Fee Bring your own Lunch Credit: Act 48 hours depending on time taken for lunch; participants can bring a lunch or go to a local restaurant for lunch. Description: The diversity of life is astounding and important to the health of people and the environment. Yet, biodiversity- and its interconnections with wildlife, culture, economics and the environmentis a current issue seldom addressed. Through the use of resource materials and hands-on activities, session participants will investigate the concepts of biodiversity, explore Pennsylvania s biodiversity at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels, and examine local and global issues relating to biodiversity. Participating teachers will receive the Pennsylvania Biodiversity guide. The activities in this training are designed for middle and high school. However the background information about Pennsylvania s ecosystem and wildlife provided in this workshop is appropriate for teachers of all grade levels. This workshop features both indoor and outdoor activities. The activities used in this session are correlated with the Environment and Ecology Standards. Please dress for indoors/outdoors. These activities can be done in a classroom, at a science night can be offered as a festival. This Flying WILD workshop will feature bird identification, natural history, adaptation, migrations and other ecological concepts that can students learn about their environment through birds and bird conservation. Participants will receive the Flying WILD guide, as well as, an introduction to the PA Game Commission s online bird sighting reporting opportunity called ebird. Participants should dress for the weather and bring binoculars if possible. (there will be some binoculars available for use during the workshop)..flying WILD is a K-12 curriculum supplement but this workshop will focus on activities most appropriate for use in Grades 2-8.
