2 Photo: Andre Gysin Explore Burnaby Parks Burnaby s extensive park system is home to a rich diversity of plants and animals including residents and migrants, as well as species at risk and invasive species. During our Explore programs you join local experts as they expand your understanding of our local environment and guide you through some of Burnaby s green spaces to explore, learn and discuss nature in our city. The Leaders Walk leaders are local naturalists or biologists living and working in the region. They are experts in the areas they discuss and have many years experience leading public educational events. What to Know Walks meet at parks and are entirely outdoors while workshops have both an indoor and outdoor component. All programs are suitable for all ages and abilities unless otherwise specified. Trips proceed rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather and bring their own water supply. Maximum number of participants for each event is 20 people. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them.
3 Earth Day Bee-Friendly Tea Party at Burnaby Village Museum Saturday, April 22, 2017, 10am-12noon Join us for a family friendly workshop creating a bee-friendly tea party. Using herbs and flowers that feed humans and bees, celebrate pollinators in the garden with flower powered herbal teas and cookies. Participants also take a bee safari in search of our precious pollinators and take home some free seeds to grow flowers that provide nectar and pollen for bees of all stripes. Lori Weidenhammer is an artist, educator and author of Victory Gardens for Bees: A DIY Guide to Saving the Bees. This is approximately a 0.5 kilometre walk. Barcode: $5.00 per person Welcoming Spring at Deer Lake Park Thursday, April 27, 2017, 9am-12noon One of the jewels in the crown of Burnaby s Parks, Deer Lake has a wide variety of habitats that harbour an impressive array of birds and animals. This tour circles the lake and the west meadows to see the signs of spring as we welcome the return of the swallows, view the nesting herons, and look and listen for songbirds in the fields and forests. Bears, coyotes, raccoons, bobcats and others that call Burnaby home, and live among us. Discuss how your actions impact the way these wild creatures behave and interact with us, and pick up tips to co-exist with these fascinating creatures while avoiding conflict. Learn about the past, present and future of the park and hear stories of the parks wildlife and wild plants, including special spots and secrets! This is approximately a 5 kilometre walk. Barcode: $5.00 per person Dawn Chorus at Deer Lake Park Saturday, May 13, 2017, 6-9am This tour is for the early risers. While it s true the early birds catch the worms, in this case it will be the early birders who catch the chorus. In spring, birds sing most vigorously and loudly early in the day to confirm their territorial claims and attract mates. This tour focuses on listening to our feathered dawn choristers and learning who s who from their songs. Walk leader: George Clulow This is approximately a 5 kilometre walk. Barcode: $5.00 per person Great Blue Heron Tour at Deer Lake Park Sunday, June 11, 2017, 10am-12noon Experience Burnaby s great blue heron colony at the height of the season. Join us for a talk and tour to view these incredible birds at Deer Lake Park. A species at risk in BC, the Pacific great blue heron is usually very sensitive to human disturbance, but this colony has formed right in the heart of the city. Learn more about the triumphs and trials that the heron families face throughout the season through a short indoor presentation and then get a first-hand look at the nesting birds on a tour of the colony. Barcode: $5.00 per person Coastal Painted Turtle at Burnaby Village Museum Saturday, July 15, 2017, 9-11am Learn about the Coastal Painted Turtle and its life and challenges in Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake parks. Meet a group with hands-on research in Burnaby and learn about their efforts in saving turtle eggs, creating a turtle beach, and tagging, rearing and releasing these turtles at our local lakes.
