2 HOW STUFF FLOATS AT DUPONT ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER Date: Saturday, April 23, 2017 Time: 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM Location: 1400 Delmarva Lane Wilmington, DE Phone: Experiment with ballast and learn about thrusters while test-driving our unmanned submersible in the marsh pond. Study how submersibles can be used in conservation, and build your own take-home submarine using an upcycled water bottle.* This activity is part of an Earth Day Celebration, from noon to 4pm, where you can meet live animals, take guided nature walks, make a craft and try your hand at netting minnows and little critters in the pond! 3 NATIONAL SERVICE WEEK EVENT AT ROCKFORD PARK INVASIVE SPECIES PULL AND LITTER CLEANUP LOCATION: Rockford Park Rockford Tower Lookout Dr. Wilmington, DE (Note: Parking in lots may be limited. You may park along the side of the park streets) DATE: Monday, April 24, 2017 TIME: 5:30-7:30 PM WHERE TO MEET - We will meet at the entrance of Rockford Tower (It s beautiful!) PROJECT DESCRIPTION We will remove invasive plants (garlic mustard) and clip English Ivy around the park We will clean up litter/trash around the park Invasive species are harmful to the local environment and can prevent native plants from growing or flourishing. As a result, many animal, insect, and plant communities suffer from the spread of invasive plants. We will show you how to identify garlic mustard and how to remove it properly We will show you how to safely remove English Ivy without harming trees or yourself PROJECT ACTIVITIES Our walking path is about 1.0 miles in length Sometimes the activity will involve standing or walking on uneven terrain Volunteers may lift objects up to 5-10 lbs. during the activity WHO CAN PARTICIPATE Please read the project activities section to determine if this project is a good fit for you and your family This park is a dog-friendly, off leash park your dog (if well-behaved!) is invited to attend! Wilmington, DE Note: Make sure to park in the fenced in area marked for State Park parking!) 10 Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge Delaware Thursday, April 20- An Evening at the Hook Lecture Series- Snowy Owls- 7:00 PM -8:00 PM Steve Huy is the founder and manager of the Lamb s Knoll Owl Banding site in the eastern edge of Western Maryland. Steve is also the co-founder and director of Project Owlnet, an organization devoted to the study of migrant saw-whet owls, and is a co-founder and director of Project SNOWstorm, a study focused on the snowy owl irruption of in the Midwest and eastern North America. Jim will discuss various aspects of the work he has done with owls. Thursday, April 27 - Birding Field Trip - 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM Led by volunteer birding guides, beginner and experienced bird watchers will enjoy observing and learning about the bird species frequenting the refuge at this time of year. Come prepared for the weather and expect to walk up to a mile. Bring your binoculars, a field guide, and spotting scope (the leader will have spotting scopes also). Binoculars will be available to borrow. Meet at the refuge office. Trips are free, open to the public, and last approximately three hours.
