1 Friday, Pre-Festival Trips Participants will meet at the trip location at 11:00. Trips will last approximately 4 hours, allowing participants to return to Paris by 4:00 for hotel check-in, festival registration and reception. Saturday, Full-day Trips Participants will board buses/vans at 6:45 a.m. at the parking lot of Quality Inn, Paris. Vehicles will leave by 7:00. Lunch will be provided. Vehicles will return to Quality Inn by 4:30 to allow participants an opportunity to refresh before the banquet. Saturday, Half-day Trips Morning: Van (paid) trips will meet at the parking lot of Quality Inn, Paris at 7:15 and trips will begin at 7:30. Trips will return to Quality Inn by 11:30 (lunch not included). Self-drive (free) trips will meet at the trip location at 7:15 and trips will begin at 7:30. Trips will end around 11:15 to allow participants to return to Paris for lunch (not included). Afternoon: Van (paid) trips will meet at the parking lot of Quality Inn, Paris at 12:15 and trips will begin at 12:30. Trips will return to Quality Inn by 4:30. Self-drive (free) trips will meet at the trip location at 12:15 and trips will begin at 12:30. Trips will end around 4:30 to allow participants to return to Paris. 2 Friday, January 18 Pre-festival Boat Tour Priority species: Waterfowl, eagles, loons, grebes, gulls Meet at Paris Land State Park Marina Meet at 12:00; Return by 5:00 Spend four hours aboard the CQ Princess cruising Kentucky Lake looking for eagles, waterfowl, gulls and other water-loving birds. Enjoy a climate-controlled cabin with large windows for comfortable viewing regardless of outdoor weather conditions. High-definition video equipment will be used for great viewing opportunities from within the cabin. Outdoor decks are available for gull chumming and unobstructed views of the birds. Free coffee, hot chocolate, soft drinks and lights snacks will be available aboard the Princess. A cash bar will also be available. Cost: $40 (NOTE: $60 for non-festival participants) Maximum Participants: 75 Trip Leader: Damien Simbeck, Joan Howe, Lauren Posego Pre-festival Cross Creeks NWR Tour Priority species: Waterfowl, eagles Meet at Cross Creeks NWR Visitor Center Meet at 12:00; Return by 5:00 Take a bus ride with festival guest speaker Joel Greenburg, along with refuge personnel, and travel behind closed gates to observe waterfowl and eagles. This refuge is typically closed during winter months to provide a secluded and undisturbed home for waterfowl. Free coffee, hot chocolate and light snacks will be available at Elk Creek at a midtrip rest stop. Maximum Participants: 19 Trip Leader: Mitz Bailey, Rick Eastridge, Joel Greenburg
3 Full-day Trip (includes lunch) Birding with Richard Crossley Priority species: Waterfowl, eagles; open field birds Meet at 6:45; Leave at 7:00; Return by 4:30; Lunch will be provided Spend the morning with festival guest speaker Richard Crossley viewing huge numbers of waterfowl, typically including all five regularly occurring species of geese, at Duck River NWR. Bald eagles are usually numerous in the refuge. Enjoy lunch at the Johnsonville State Historic Park Visitor Center. Spend the afternoon birding the Historic Park as well as the Camden Bottoms Wildlife Management Area. Maximum Participants: 24 Trip Leader: Dwight Cooley, Joan Howe, Richard Crossley Big Sandy/Britton Ford, Tennessee NWR Priority species: Waterfowl, loons, grebes, gulls, woodland species Meet at 6:45; Leave at 7:00; Return by 4:30; Lunch will be provided Visit two sections of the Tennessee NWR. Britton Ford is usually the home for a great diversity of geese and puddle ducks. Enjoy lunch while watching the bird feeders at the Tennessee NWR Visitor Center. Big Sandy attracts large numbers of waterfowl, including large rafts of diving ducks that often include Greater Scaup, Common Merganser and scoters. Pace Point is one of the best sites in Tennessee for rare loon and grebe species. A stop at Christopher Manor for coffee, hot chocolate and snacks will be included. 4 Full-day Trips (includes lunch) Kentucky Dam Priority species: Gulls, waterfowl, Brown-headed Nuthatch, woodland species Meet at 6:45; Leave at 7:00; Return by 4:30; Lunch will be provided Kentucky Dam can host hundreds, and sometimes thousands of gulls, with rarities always a possibility. Rafts of diving ducks on the reservoir can be very diverse. A visit to Airport Road will try to locate Kentucky s only population of Brown-headed Nuthatch. Enjoy lunch at the Kentucky Dam Village SP, then visit several TVA reservoir access sites for an opportunity to see many common wintering woodland birds. Maximum Participants: 12 Trip Leader: Damien Simbeck Land Between The Lakes Priority species: Eagles, woodland species Meet at 6:45; Leave at 7:00; Return by 4:30; Lunch will be provided Explore the birding hotspots and tucked-away corners of the 170,000 acre national forest. Pinned between the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, Land Between the Lakes leads to great opportunities for birding in forest, field and shore. We will look for eagles, pelicans, raptors and woodland songbirds. Discover LBL s role in restoring bald eagles to our region. Enjoy lunch during a visit to the Woodlands Nature Station, where you will see some of Tennessee s native wildlife, including birds of prey, up close and personal. Meet at 5:15; Leave PROMPTLY at 5:30 Join a local specialist and spend 12 hours trying to find as many species as possible. Over 100 species are present in the area during winter months. Be prepared for a full day of stop and go birding, field stomping, lake scoping, etc. Snacks, drinks and lunch provided. The trip will return to Quality Inn by 5:30 to allow refreshing/recovering before the banquet. This trip will follow ABA listing rules for birding ethics and Big Day participation. 6 Half-day Trips Morning Paris Landing State Park Priority species: Woodland birds, waterfowl Meet at Paris Landing State Park, swim beach parking lot Meet at 7:15; Leave at 7:30; Return by 11:30 Take a walk in the park, looking for birds. The park s forests and open areas provide habitat for a nice diversity of birds, and the open reservoir surrounding the park attracts large numbers of ducks, loons, grebes and gulls. American White Pelicans are often seen feeding in the area or loafing on Gull Island. Participant will drive their own vehicles. Cost: Free Maximum Participants: Unlimited Trip Leader: Randy Hedgepath, David Haggard Sparrow Stomp Priority Species: Sparrows, field birds Meet at 7:15; Leave at 7:30; Return by 11:30 Visit several local hotspots, concentrating on fields and thickets looking for sparrows. During winter months, about 14 species of sparrows reside in the Paris area, including rarer species such as American Tree, LeConte s and Lincoln s. Efforts will be made to find as many of these as possible. Please wear water-proof footwear and be prepare to spend most of the morning on foot. 7 Half-day Trips Afternoon Beginning Birding Priority species: Common southeastern birds Meet at the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center Meet at 12:15; Leave at 12:30; Return by 4:30 Meet at the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and learn the basics of bird watching, bird identification and birding ethics. This trip will include a visit to the Tennessee NWR headquarters to get closeup views of common birds at the feeders. Participant will drive their own vehicles. Cost: Free Maximum Participants: Unlimited Trip Leader: Nashville TOS members Civil War Forts (Donelson and Heimen) Priority species: Woodland birds, eagles Meet at 12:15; Leave at 12:30; Return by 4:30 Join fort staff and festival guest speaker Joel Greenburg to tour the historic fort areas, including a history lesson of the role these forts played during the American Civil War. Enjoy leisure walks along park trails and roadsides, looking for woodland and open edge species in the area. This trip will also include a visit to the active Bald Eagle nest at Fort Donelson. 8 Sunday, January 20 Half-day Trips TVA Harmon Creek Management Unit with Richard Crossley Priority species: Woodland and field species, some waterfowl Meet at 6:45; Leave at 7:00; Return by 12:00 Join festival guest speaker Richard Crossley to visit lands managed by TVA. Open waters of Kentucky Reservoir attract waterfowl, loons and grebes. Mature pine and hardwood forests provide winter cover and food for many birds. Open fields, managed by prescribed burns, attract many sparrows. Cost: $12 Maximum Participants: 12 (could be 22 with 2 vans) Trip Leader: Damien Simbeck, Richard Crossley Big Sandy NWR/Old 23 rd Priority species: Waterfowl, woodland birds Meet at 6:45; Leave at 7:00; Return by 12:00 Look for waterfowl and woodland birds at Big Sandy NWR.
