The Coventry Great Place Scheme aims to light up the city in new and unusual ways, displaying a rich array of national and home-grown creative innovation. Coventry Great Place Scheme is supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, Historic England, Coventry City Council, University of Warwick, Coventry University, Business Improvement District and Trust funding. PREPARING TO WELCOME NEW VISITORS Getting the city ready for 2021 and beyond From 2018 to 2020 Coventry will be building capacity in our arts, heritage and tourism organisations, revealing some

4 PREPARING TO WELCOME NEW VISITORS Getting the city ready for 2021 and beyond From 2018 to 2020 Coventry will be building capacity in our arts, heritage and tourism organisations, revealing some hidden heritage sites, carrying out visitor research and building an infrastructure to cope with an increased number of visitors which we eagerly anticipate. We are also investigating all the websites which promote the city, making sure they are making the most out of opportunities to link to each other and a wider visitor network. In 2019, look out for new maps, guides and trails with special offers for local residents to explore arts and heritage attractions they might not have been to before.

5 PILOTING NEW FESTIVAL IDEAS Shop Front Festival March 2018 Shop Front Festival on the 23 and 24 March presented by Theatre Absolute will see theatre in shop fronts, pop-up performances in precincts, dancing in the streets something for everyone to participate in. Also part of the national Get Creative Festival, highlights include Made in Store and Latherland where shopkeepers and customers take part in both a semi-improvised show for Coventry and a city centre soap opera; DIY Dance, an invitation to local youth and community dance groups to perform pieces in response to city centre architecture; and an Actual Reality Arcade where families play in a life-sized interactive game zone inspired by classic arcade games The festival will bring something for everyone from young to old, from those who have experience of theatre, dance and music events to those who might stumble across one of the events for the first time.

6 PILOTING NEW FESTIVAL IDEAS Sunrise at the Cathedral December January 2019 Marking the end of the centenary celebrations of the old Coventry Cathedral and beckoning in a new dawn for 2019, a sound and light site-specific performance will animate Coventry s most loved ruins. This atmospheric event will take place for two weeks in the Cathedral ruins and the soundtrack will be created with community participation. Watch this space for more information coming soon.

7 PILOTING NEW FESTIVAL IDEAS Imagine a Likeable Bikeable City Imagineer Productions has ambitious plans to build to a major international festival in 2021, where people will come together to wonder at the extraordinary creations brought together by engineering and art. One part of their build up programme interweaves sonic art, engineering and cycling and is inspired by plans to develop a new heritage trail which will eventually link Charterhouse, London Road Cemetery and FarGo Village together. In the project Likeable Bikeable City, sonic artist Kaffe Matthews is working with Nick Martin to design a new bike for people to cycle the new route, which will include a sound scape inspired by people and stories from the city. Schools will be partnering with engineers to create new art works which have moving parts which will be triggered by GPS system built into the bikes. This September, don t miss the opportunity to take part in workshops, talks and pilot showcases for the schools project, plus the arrival of Coventry s latest new bikes in 2019.

Masterji Publication Following the huge success of exhibitions in Coventry, Mumbai and New York, the family of Coventry photographer Masterji has released a new photographic book of highlights from his archive with Photo Archive Miners. Featuring 66 images from across his career, the book celebrates Coventry s South Asian immigrants since his own arrival from India in Ranging from intimate individual portraits to groups of friends and family, the pictures make visible an important strand of the city s social history. Back by popular demand, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire s 2Tone Taxi will hit the streets again in the summer of 2018, offering rides which tell the story of the city; its music, monuments and people. With a taxi wrap created by Ian Cook from PopbangColour, inspired by ideas from listeners, and a gregarious tour guide from Theatre Absolute, passengers will be encouraged to take a trip down memory lane or have fun in a voyage of discovery. Young People make the News July 2018 If you were sad to see the wonderful 1950 s Coventry Evening Telegraph building close in recent years, then we invite you to discover something new in its huge printing press rooms, brought to life by Coventry s young performing groups for a week in July Mercurial Dance and Belgrade Youth Theatre will lead site-specific performances, some improvised on the night using dance, drama, poetry and film to tell the stories which emerged from its broadsheets. It s your last chance to see the old Coventry Evening Telegraph building before it is refurbished as a 1950 s style hotel ready for 2021.

A Modern and Medieval City Coventry boasts some of the world s most fascinating and unique medieval houses, priories and fortifications. New maps will be commissioned to uncover our hidden medieval gems, tucked away, next to the equally arresting modern architecture offered by our unique city. Artist commissioned signage and city maps & trails revealing interest facts to a variety of different age groups will be piloted as part of the scheme.

A Tale of Two Streets Following the success of Imagine Hillfields and the Masterji photographic exhibitions in recent years, Photo Archive Miners will turn their investigative eyes on two more fascinating areas of Coventry; Far Gosford Street and the Foleshill Road. Nationally known photographer, Niall McDiarmid, whose larger than life street portraits are currently displayed at the Museum of London, is commissioned to discover and photograph the streets occupants who come from all walks of life alongside eleven of Coventry s young emerging photographers.
