4 Kolding Kommune Kolding is located centrally in Denmark in the middle of the Triangle Region with more than 500,000 jobs within a one-hour drive. Kolding has more than 92,000 inhabitants, and Copenhagen and Hamburg is a mere two-hour drive away. Similarly, Billund International Airport can be reached by car within 40 minutes. Kolding hosts two universities with approx.10,500 students of which approx. 2,000 study design.
5 UNESCO Creative Cities Network Welcoming Global Societies for Cultural Exchange, Business and Collaboration The honourable designation of Kolding Municipality as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) Design is a huge milestone in the development of Kolding as a design community! Seven years ago Kolding Municipality acknowledged the need for new ways of developing new approaches to welfare, social responsibility, cultural creativity and business development. The City Council adopted a strategic vision: We Design for Life. Today Kolding has succeeded in implementing design thinking in several areas. Developing a design-driven community is still a main goal for the city, and design thinking has the capacity to play a decisive role in developing the Nordic welfare system version 2.0. The membership of the UCCN Design is a great opportunity for Kolding to share and spread first-hand experience with design-driven innovation in the public sector, in business environment, in education and research and in the field of cultural exchange and collaboration. The membership also enables Kolding to develop and expand national and international networks and to function as a vibrant and sharing partner of other design communities. Collaboration and cultural exchange are essential to the city s ambition to become a full-scale design-thinking community. MAYOR JØRN PEDERSEN 4 5

7 UNESCO Creative Cities Network From Vision to Reality From political strategy through leadership to action. 900 people or 1% of Kolding s population participated in developing Kolding s new vision. The group represented a broad cross-section of the population and was diverse in terms of gender, ethnicity, age and education. The slogan We Design for Life was a political and administrative decision to focus on a new area. To create an up-to-date leadership culture 250 managers were involved in a design process aimed to develop a new management foundation based on the new vision. Today all managers are offered regular training in design management. Due to the use of design processes the citizens are regularly involved in the municipality s development on at least two levels: 1) All design-driven social innovation projects are based on the dogma that research into the context and involvement of the affected citizens is required in order to gain human-centred insight. In addition, the citizens function as vital partners at the various test stages. 2) Creative urban and aesthetic city development is largely characterised by co-creation, where the affected and interested stakeholders take part in the creative idea generation process. 900 people participated in developing Kolding s new vision We Design for Life 6 7
