1 9/12/2010- Warm up: Write down the definition of relief sculpture and sculpture in the round! A relief sculpture, is a sculpture made to be seen from one side (or from one angle). A sculpture "in the round", on the other hand, is made to be seen from many directions (or angles), perhaps even from above and below, as well as from behind. So, it is free-standing and must be fully developed from all points of view.

14 Clay comes from the earth. It is usually found in deposits along rivers. Then dried and foreign particles are removed. It's then crushed until fine and powdery. The Dry Clay is mixed together in different recipes to create a clay body. Slip is liquid clay that is too wet to construct pots out of. Slip is also used as a pot is being constructed. It can help attach pieces together, almost like a glue.
15 The clay body also needs to be wedged. That means it needs to be kneaded to make it even in consistency and to remove any air pockets. (Air trapped in clay will expand when it is fired and blow the pot apart.)
16 The Pot is Constructed using this moist pliable clay body, using one or several of the construction methods including pinch coil Slab wheel. As a pot is being constructed it is covered up to keep if from drying out. If you need to return to finish it later it must be moist.
17 The constructed pot becomes Leatherhard as it begins to dry and it still feels damp and cool to the touch but if you tried to bend it, it would break. It might take just a couple of hours for a small pot or overnight for a larger pot to become leatherhard. The example on the right shows this stage. A leatherhard pot can be scraped to smooth it out or carved into to decorate it.
18 Then if you leave the leatherhard pot uncovered, within 2 to 5 days the pot becomes Bone Dry. Bone dry pottery means there is no moisture left in it all. The pot doesn't even feel cool any longer. If it felt cool it would still have moisture in it. The pot is very fragile and can be turned back to slip by covering it with water. At this point the pot can now be Fired.
19 A pot is fired to make it rock hard. The pots are heated to about 2000 degrees. They are fired (not baked) in an oven-like device called a kiln. After the pots have been fired the first time they are called Bisque pottery. They are now rock hard and the clay can't be softened with water any longer.
20 Glazeware is the term given to pottery that has had glaze applied to it. Glaze is the glass-like coating that is brushed on a pot and then the pot has to be fired a final time to develop the glass like coating. The glazed pot looks chalky and the glass and color developed after it has again been fired, this time the firing is called the Glaze Fire. Glaze is being applied to this pitcher with a brush.
21 Liquid glazes/glaze Fire: Suspensions of various powdered minerals, and metal oxides-can be applied by dipping pieces directly into the glaze, pouring the glaze over piece, spraying it or using a brush. To prevent the glaze from sticking to the kiln during firing, leave a small part of the piece unglazed. Leave ¼ inch around hole unglazed. Over glaze- Low temperature glazes that give ceramics a more decorative, glassy look. Apply one or more coats.

This oolitic limestone was not found in the region and so the statuette must have been brought to the area from another location. Cave paintings from Lascaux France were discovered about the same time.
