Next Meeting Thursday, July 20, 2017 President s Letter July 2017 Recently, I stopped by the saw class that was sponsored by Bontz Saw Works in Edwardsville, Illinois and I was able to see a few of our members hard at work making handsaws. Ron Bontz is a guild member who makes some of the most impressive handsaws on the planet. If you aren t familiar with his work you need to visit his website at Each one of them made an absolutely impressive saw that is destined to become an heirloom. Now they have an amazing saw that they know every part of it intimately and they also know how to make and sharpen a saw. The cost of the guild class was a little more than they could buy the saw for retail what a bargain! If you haven t taken advantage of a guild class, I want to really encourage you to look into them. We have classes for all skill levels and for most woodworking topics. If we don t have the class you would like, just ask James Payne (the class coordinator) or any of the guild officers to see if we can 1
arrange it. I m very happy to note that we have two more opportunities that will benefit the guild. We are now a part of the Amazon Smile program that enables people who shop on Amazon to get a charitable contribution to the guild at no cost to them. Also, we are now a part of the Boeing Gift Match Program that enables current and retired Boeing employees to contribute either money or volunteer hours to the guild and Boeing matches the contribution. Programs like these bring in a little extra revenue to the guild and it helps us expand our ability to serve our members. I d like to thank Eric Oman for helping us to get involved in the Boeing Gift Match Program. Our meeting this month will be presented by Russ Ackerson about dust collection in the woodshop. When I first starting woodworking a little over 30 years ago, I really thought that a broom and a shovel was all the dust collection I needed. How wrong I was! Over the years I ve found out that wood dust in the shop is not only messy and a nuisance, but can have dire health consequences. I hope you can make it out to this meeting, it s going to be a good one! Mike Highlights of the June Meeting 2
Woodworking Hand Tools Presented by Ethan Sincox Ethan mostly uses hand tools, largely due to them being quiet and not needing dust collection. Although he has managed to escape collecting many tools, beading tools have become an exception to the rule. Beading Tools: - Are typically used to embellish edges or surfaces of boards. - Most contain 3 key components: a body, cutter(s) and fence 3
- The body clamps the cutter and is held by the user - The cutter(s) are made from spring steel (same as handsaw material) and are filed and honed to match the desired inverse profile - Cutters can readily be shop-made to replicate antique profiles, especially useful for restoration - A fence is typically integrated into the tool for convenient and consistent edge referencing, though an ad hoc wooden fence can also be used. - Remove wood by moving the profiled cutting along the surface, allowing the tool to progressively deepen the profile. - Straight long grain is easier to cut, but a sharp cutter and light passes will cut cross-grain Ethan's collection of over a dozen beading tools range from a pristine, rare ca. late 1800s tool all the way to current production tools. He generally recommends Lee Valley's "Cast Scratch Stock Reeder Beading Tool" p/n 15P17.10 as a good tool to start with. This tool is modeled after Preston and Son's 1393S More information, including social media handles can be found at Some resources for hand tool enthusiasts include: - Patrich Leach, - Handworks, (This has been occurring every other year in Amana, IA. No guaranties for 2019 yet) - Directory of American Tool and Machinery Patents, 4
Beading tools from Ethan's collection. Beading tool use demonstration. THE TOY CORNER More than 20 new toy patterns have been added to the website! Check Them Out Here! Fall Toys for Tots Thank you to all those that have made some great items for the Fall contribution to Toys for Tots but we ve got a way to go. November s meeting will be the last opportunity to bring your items in and by my count that s only 4 months away. We ve set a target of 50 toys and are looking forward to seeing the creativity of each of you 5
The Toys for Tots program includes fully finished (non-toxic) toys that are storebought quality and cannot include any toy guns or anything resembling a weapon. We have received several submissions for replacement of our logo and are preparing the potential candidates for presentation to the membership for a vote at the August meeting. If you are a current or retired Boeing employee you can now contribute to the St. Louis Woodworker s guild through the Boeing Gift Match program. The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program. As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing. The maximum individual contribution is $6, or 6,000 volunteer hours. Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps: Step 1: Eligible Boeing employees or retirees first make a contribution directly to the guild Step 2: After making your donation go to Total Access and click on My Community Giving GIVE Gift Match on the Boeing Gift Match page. 8
Step 3: Register your donation whether it s monetary or volunteer hours and select The St. Louis Woodworker s Guild and enter the total amount and the date of the contribution. It s that easy, you get a great tax break and it benefits the guild directly. If you have any questions, please Mike Sistek at president@slwg.org and if I don t know the answer, I will try to find it for you.
