Next Meeting 7:00 PM Thursday, March 21, 2019 Meeting Location: Moolah Shrine Facility Fee Fee Road St. Louis, MO Click here for Map to the Meeting Location President s Letter March 2019 This month Stephen Crouse will be telling us how he built a lift on his basement stairway that he uses to move projects and materials to his shop. He tells us that he built it for about $200 sourcing many of the parts from 1
Harbor Freight. Steve is coming from Wisconsin to make this presentation. Wayne Watson met him through his reading an article about our toy program and calling us for information on how it works. Our annual Show and Tell and Silent Auction meeting will be held in April this year. As usual, if you would like to bring a snack or dessert to share at the April meeting it would be appreciated by all. Also coming up in April is election of officers for the new fiscal year. I hope you can attend our meeting on the 21st, I will see you there. Bob Last Month's Meeting Making a Chair and 2
Foot Stool by Tom and Leslie Tupper Tom and Leslie Tupper carried us through all of the steps that they learned in making this beautiful Michael Fortune designed mahogany chair plus a footstool. Tom and Leslie attended a weeklong course led by Michael Fortune at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking, learning skills and techniques from this master and applied what they learned plus their own knowledge of woodworking to complete the project. These were really two projects: the chair, which was the subject of the Marc Adams course, plus the stool, which was a design by Tom and Leslie in the same style of the chair. In addition, Tom and Leslie have a matching set in progress in their shop. The chair was the feature article in Fine Woodworking, June and August 2014 issues. Some of the tools and materials used to make and use the forms. The main form for the arms and front legs. 3
A few facts about the project: The chair is constructed of 22 pieces of mahogany, of which 16 are bent laminations and 6 are solid pieces. They made 9 patterns for the chair. The laminations were made from 1/8 thick pieces which were cut from 5/4 stock. They used Titebond III for the laminations which gave them an open time of about 15 minutes for the glue-up. Bendable plywood was used for the tops of the curved forms. The project was finished with 5 coats of Epifanes Spar Varnish using a foam brush and rags. Tom and Leslie graciously offered free suggestions and maybe the loan of pattern pieces to members of the Guild who would be interested in tackling this project on their own. Anyone who might be interested should contact Tom at trtucker@yahoo.com. The finished chair, what a beauty!!! 4
SHOW AND TELL Rich Sanders showed us a walnut serving tray, one of the first projects that he made using a Craftsman radial arm saw back in the 70's. Brad Bernhard showed us a partially completed 18th century replica mahogany Chippendale table base that he has been working on in his shop. We are looking forward to seeing the completed table soon!!! 5
6
Bill Miller demonstrated a coil binding that can be used on existing pattern books or other bound spine documents such as magazines that you want to lay flat. Also, a scroll sawed MOM from cherry. Website Survey David Zemon sent out an to all members requesting input on the new website design and content. The more responses we receive, the better our newly designed website will be able to reflect the needs of the Guild. Please dig this out and respond or use this LINK. Thank you for participating! 8 FAUST PARK TOY TRUCK ASSEMBLY DAY The toy build at Faust Park on February 23 rd resulted in a lot of parts but no assembled vehicles. On Saturday, March 23 rd, we will have a Toy Truck Assembly Day at the shop. There will be some finish sanding but the bulk of the time will be gluing and nailing units together. The finished trucks will look like these pictures. The morning shift is full, but we need at least three volunteers for the afternoon shift (1 PM to 4 PM). If you would like to participate, contact Bill Schuchat at wschuchat@gmail.com ROCKLER TOY BUILD DAY Guild members met at Rockler on March 2 nd to build toys and share their experiences with Rockler customers. Over the day there were 99 toys built and a lot of car bodies prepped for assembly. More than a dozen cars were built by children and taken home to be played with and shared with brothers and 8
sisters. Guild members got to try out several different pieces of equipment including a really nice SawStop setup and Dewalt and Excalibur scroll saws. It is surprising to find out the number of woodworkers that don t realize the Guild exists and the benefits of belonging to the guild. I am confident that several new members will result from the customer interaction. Guild members participating in the event include Mike Seevers, Bob Meyers, Bob Zahner, David Hoffman, Hal Donovan, Donald Turner, Keith Lissant, Bill Schuchat, and Wayne Humphrey. Suzie Romine also spent several hours with a scroll saw cutting out butterflies. Thanks to all that helped make this event a success. Daniel Donovan, age 3, builds a car with the help of Mike Seevers 9
WE RE MAKING A CHANGE Effective immediately, Bill Schuchat is assuming the role of Toy Committee Chair. Our current Chair, Wayne Humphrey, is stepping into another role at the Guild. We want to thank Wayne for his leadership and guidance during the past few years and his help in growing the toy program. Some of last month's toy donations. BMABStL plans to hand out about 200 book boxes and 1,000 books in March at events rescheduled from events they had to cancel due to bad weather in January and February. Please bring your completed book boxes to the March 21 meeting. If you need glue or a handle template (fingers crossed) please see me as you come in. Thank you to the members who have supported the BMAB program by building boxes. For those Guild Members who are delivering completed boxes, please set your boxes in or near the White Ford F150 parked at the rear entrance on the lower level.
