1 Subject: Design and Technology Year Group: 7 of Qualification: N/A Exam Board: N/A Topic / Unit Introduction Mechanical toy made in wood Motion alarm with card packaging Food - Healthy Eating Textiles Graphics 7x groups only First 2 weeks Autumn term These projects will be covered on a rotational basis. Graphics, measuring, generating and developing a logo design making a wrap for a box with basic graphics (base line assessment) Pupils will make a simple mechanical toy to draw attention to an environmental charity of their choice. This will teach basic workshop skills in wood and simple mechanisms Design and make an electronic personal alarm. They learn how to safely use a variety of electronic equipment to make a printed circuit board. They also design and make the packaging for the alarm Pupils learn about the 5 a day rule, the importance of calcium and eating a balanced diet. They make fruit smoothies, fruit salad, mini pizzas, fruit crumble, fruit muffins and ratatouille. They taste test shop bought products using tasting vocabulary and compare these to their own. They develop knife skills. Pupils design and make a drawstring sports bag. They research existing products and complete a product analysis. They design a sports logo and brand. They use the sewing machine. Pupils learn about graphics and product branding. They will consider how brands add value to products. They will also develop their own sports brand which they will create using CorelDraw software. They will learn to create and manipulate graphic images and text. As part of the project there is the opportunity to put their brand logo onto a T-shirt. Looking at logos and packaging at home contains much information on mechanisms. Environmental charities can also be independently researched on the internet. Exemplar materials on a PowerPoint presentation with examples of different levels achieved. Pupils can also look at packaging and graphics in the home and on the internet. Food a Fact of Life website has videos to demonstrate cutting techniques and to illustrate the principles of healthy eating. Examples of high quality and well manufactured bags are on display for pupils to look at. Design and Make it textiles technology for key stage 3 by Nelson Thornes is a good text book. There are numerous websites that they can use to see how other brands are used. Pupils can also research brands on products/clothing items they have at home.

2 Subject: Design and Technology Year Group: 8 of Qualification: N/A Exam Board: N/A Topic / Unit Desk-Tidy Night-light Nutrition and dishes aimed at different target groups Which term e.g. first half of These projects will be done on a rotational basis Pupils will use sketches and card models to create a phone and pen holder. They will draw it on CorelDraw software and part will be laser cut using their drawing. The base will be cut by hand and part will be cut on a metal lathe. Design and make a light sensitive night-light. They learn how to safely use a variety of electronic equipment to make a printed circuit board. They also design and make the shade for the light out of paper and the housing for the circuit using vacuum formed plastic. Pupils recap knowledge of 5 a day and the eat-well plate. They can improve knife skills also. Pupils to make a tomato pasta sauce, scone based pizza, chicken nuggets, pasta salad, a dessert, bolognaise / chilli con carne, stir fry. Pupils will need to do a small amount of modelling at home using card and scissors. contains useful information on CAD and CAM (computer aided design and computer aided manufacture). In class there are exemplar lights, shades and designs sheets made to a variety of standards to show how they are levelled. has information on vacuum forming and an image search on paper shades/lanterns will give many ideas. Food a Fact of Life website has videos to demonstrate cutting techniques and to illustrate the principles of healthy eating. Monster cushion Gift box (8Y only) Pupils design and make a monster cushion. They develop their own template pieces and learn how to cut fabric accurately. They design the monster character and develop a story/film. Students use existing cartoon images from which they have to remove the backgrounds. They combine these with graphical techniques, backgrounds and text into an exciting design. These are printed onto card and cut out and assembled by the student with craft equipment. Examples of high quality and well manufactured cushions are on display for pupils to look at. If you can sew at home with your child it would help them. Design and Make it textiles technology for key stage 3 by Nelson Thornes is a good text book. graphics section contains information that may be useful regarding materials, techniques and packaging symbols.
