GCSE Bitesize Examinations General Certificate of Secondary Education Design and Technology Resistant Materials Mark Scheme Total marks: 85
Question 1 One for each source and one for each explanation. (6 marks) Accept examples such as: Questionnaire to find out what sort of items people keep on their desk. Internet to find sources of fittings or materials Existing products to evaluate the method of construction etc. Question 2 Two marks for each example and explanation. (6 marks) Examples such as: Should be modern looking. (Store has a reputation for modern looking products.) Must be capable of being produced in large numbers (will need to be batch produced.) Must be reasonably priced when sold. (Store has a reputation for reasonably priced items.) Should hold and keep organised a variety of items. (Examples given.) Must be safe to use Must have interesting design etc. Question 3 Ideas: The ideas must be different, eg the use of different materials, completely different shape. The idea must be likely to work: look modern; keep items tidy; be capable of batch production; be stable (not likely to fall over); easy to get items out of and put items away (no doors, drawers acceptable but more difficult to use.) A good idea which fulfils most of brief and specification A simple idea which is different and fulfils some of the brief and specification 5-6 marks Award up to 6 marks for each idea. No marks for second idea if not different in principle or approach from first.) 3 4 marks 1-3 marks (20 marks) (12 marks) Sketching: Good quality isometric or two point perspective sketches. Use of colour, some shading or outlining, use of thick and thin lines around edges. Good proportion (are sizes of compartments likely to take items?). Reasonable quality line sketch or attempt at 3D 4-5 marks overall (5 marks) 2-3 marks overall Simple line sketch 1 mark overall Notes: 3 marks for a fully (3 marks)
Notes explain the idea and add to the understanding. They could explain the thought behind the idea and show why it was chosen, possible construction methods, explain finishes to be applied, how it would work in practice and even note possible difficulties. annotated drawing 2 marks for simple notes 1 mark for labelling Question 4 4a) Laminating 4b) Award one to four marks depending on detail. If no sketch included two marks maximum. (1 mark) Sketch of a suitable former Use of the term former Glue on all parts Press together Leave to dry 4c) Thermoplastic 4d) Award one to four marks depending on detail. If no sketch included two marks maximum. (1 mark) Heating using a strip heater (or under a heater such as a vacuum former) Forming around a former Allowing to cool Sketch of simple former 4e) Brass (brazing rod or spelter also) (1 mark) 4f) Award one to four marks depending on detail. If no sketch included two marks maximum. Apply flux Wire together or use some form of jig Apply heat When hot enough touch with brazing rod Ensure that brass runs or flows around joint Allow to cool slowly (brass can also be applied in small amounts to flux instead but it must be seen to flow around joint.
5a, 5b, 5c Award one mark for each acceptable use (per question). Award one mark for the explanation (per question). (6 marks) Any three ways of using ICT to help design. Examples such as: Using the internet to check materials availability Using a spreadsheet package for calculating the cost of the product Using a word processor package to send a letter Using communicating with suppliers or client Using a fax for ordering materials Using a graphics package to produce a drawing to show an idea to client Using a mobile phone to contact a manufacturer or supplier Using a digital video or still camera to record a model or examine an existing product Using a scanner to copy an illustration in a design portfolio 5d) Award one mark if named but not explained. Two marks if named and explained. (2 marks) The answer should refer to a CAM system. Use of CAM such as CNC robotic: welding, laser cutting, paint or electrostatic spraying, CNC routing, machining, cutting etc. 6a) Award two marks if explanation is clear. One if explanation is unclear. (2 marks) One off: Only one produced, used as prototype. Uses such as used to try out idea, used to see of it would look right, used to see if idea was feasible, used to see if sizes were correct, used to see if it was stable strong enough 6b) Batch production (1 mark) 6c) Award one to five marks depending on detail of drawing. The answer must include drawings and be clear about how it works. (5 marks) The design for a jig or template should help to speed up production. The ideas should be practicable and well drawn. Wooden former the correct shape (could have male and female parts), well drawn - full marks Jig to cut wood or plastic to correct length for base or top, well drawn - full marks
Jig to allow drilling in correct position of holes in acrylic, metal guides for drill - full marks. Template to mark position of holes = 3marks (less time saved as hole could still be drilled incorrectly.) 6d) Award one mark for each mentioned and one mark for explaining how it would apply up to a maximum of five. (5 marks) Mention details such as: Use of quality assurance (quality of bought-in materials etc.) Use of quality control Use of jigs Use of templates Use of an assembly line Use of critical points 7a, 7b, 7c Award one mark for each point identified (per question). (3 marks) Identify points such as: Items could fall down back Butt joints not strong Butt joints not attractive Envelope section could be divided Waste space under Nothing to keep items tidy on top 7d) Award two marks for each improvement.
