This book will offer guidance, information, direction, and accurate record keeping and should be with your work at all times as a reference. 2 A Design & Visual Communication D.V.C. Course 2017 Dear Parents and Year 10 Students First, a warm welcome to you, our parents and students together. We are proud to offer this course which has been designed with you in mind. Until recently our subject was called Graphics, that name was changed by the Ministry of Education. The main reason was a rewrite of the Achievement Standards from Level 1 to Level 3 and on to Bursary. This does allow for more development of our core business. So, what is Design & Visual Communications? Simply designing anything and everything! This course is about the development of skills, concepts and approaches for developing new ideas in Spacial design (Architecture both indoor and outdoors) as well as Product design (everyday objects that we use) for the real worldour concepts and ideas are ever evolving as new and better Technolgy is discovered and applied to our lives. Hope that explains! Well done for choosing this course of discovery, it will take you out of your normal comfort zone and challenge you. When challenged by the work remember there are no dumb questions, only avoidable mistakes by pupils who did not ask. I am available Tuesday through to Thursday after school for any extra help (unless I have some meeting or other engagement) if you feel you are not coping, getting behind or just want to check that you are on task. Pop in! These voluntary lessons are more one on one, lasting from ten minutes to an hour? It is there for those students who may need a bit more confidence building. It is hoped that many of you will see the potential of this course, with its many facets like computer skills, technical drawing skills, improved freehand sketching, refining concepts etc. and continue with us through to Level 3. It also complements very well with the Design Media course offered by the Art Department. We hope this course will make you think about the numerous future careers opportunities allied with other subjects that will open doors for you. It is our commitment to you to find time to help you! This booklet contains all the information necessary for you to begin this course. Should any changes are necessary we will inform you before the project begins. Never be scared to make mistakes, so what do they teach us? That way did not work so lets look for another or try again! Last year our Level 1 through to Level 3 attained more Merits and Excellences in the internal and external exams than the last few previous years. So well done to all our past students! 3 Year 10 Students! Design and Visual Communication This, half year course, Twice a week is intended to develop a student s visual communication and design skills. Students problem solve issues that are written as design briefs. The emphasis is on neat, accurate drawing skills with a high level of presentation. Development of Concepts and of Ideas are expected to be drawn in freehand in the Visual Diaries. Most drawings and renderings will be presented on A3 paper. This course leads into structured full year courses in Design & Visual Communications - Graphics through to NCEA Level 3 - Scholarship. The skills being taught now would lay the student s communication and understanding if they were to follow any of the other Technology strands. This course is to prepare you well for the Level 1 course next year in Year 11. Aims: To follow the New Zealand Year 9 to 13 Graphics and Design outlines To introduce a course that is interesting, relevant, and provides students with a good understanding as to where this subject might lead. To stimulate the interest students of boys, with a wide range of abilities and a variety of cultural backgrounds. To teach an outline of technical drawing, instrumental, design skills and standards. To challenge and encourage students to reach high standards of presentation. Objectives: To develop in the students: Competence in the use of draughting modes and media. Confidence in freehand sketching as a means of communicating ideas. Sound habits of neatness and accuracy. The ability to work in a logical sequence through the Design Process. A sense of achievement and satisfaction through success in designing and drawing. Equipment: Students are required to pay a one off charge at the start of the year of $40 for the kit; this covers paper, pencils and drawing instruments and materials used during the course. The students also need an A4 10 Page clear folder to keep their handouts in at school. If students looked after their kits from last year they may only need to buy new pencils and an A4 visual arts diary for freehand. Assessment: Work is assessed by the teacher during the course, and at the end to give a final level of achievement. You will be assessed against the levels in the New Zealand Curriculum. Work to be covered: 1 What is Problem Solving and the Design Process? Analyse clearly what is being asked before you begin Work individually to produce an ideas, compare with those around you. Afterwards: Discuss what worked and what didn t why? What is the Design Process and how could it have helped us?
4 2 Instrumental drawing Introduction to the drawing board Set Square exercises Geometric constructions and logos Own logo/construction design using only T-square and set-squares. 3. Freehand sketching 2D sketching line techniques Oblique and isometric cubes Crating more complex shapes 4. Mini design brief: Simple cam toy: Intro to Design Briefs and the Design Process Teacher given brief Teaching of how cam mechanisms work Sketching techniques and crating used for concepts Investigation and development Focus on use of evaluation at each stage to assist development. Produce a mock-up using simple materials (A digital model will be produced on the computer during the final unit) 5. Pictorial drawing Oblique drawing exercises Rendering techniques to show light and shadow Oblique desk design to reinforce technique. Isometric drawing exercises Isometric cottage design 5. Orthographic projection Basic 3 rd angle projection practice sheets Basic drawing conventions Use of scales 6. The use of computers for model making Introduction to Google Sketch-up Return to the mock-up of the Project and produce the final outcome on the computer 7.Cost / Equipment: A charge for the course of approximate $ If looked after, equipment should last students throughout the senior school.. 8.STUDENT INFORMATION It is important that all work produced is kept in as clean and presentable condition as possible to assist in meeting assessment requirements. Work is NEVER folded. PROCEDURES Late submission policy An assignment which is late is a not achieved. Exceptions may be made in the case of illness with a supporting Doctors Certificate, OR pre-arranged with the HOD
5 Briefs Each brief will contain a Situation (context of the brief) Problem ( explains what needs to be resolved) Design Specifications (What students are required to do and limits set) Folio Requirements (Notes specifically what students need to complete) Marking and Evaluation sheet (from Achieved to Excellence) Submission of work Work is to be submitted on the due day at the beginning of the lesson. Work is to be in a sequence and will be marked within 7 working days. Work units will be handed back and results will appear as well as suggestions for improvement. All students will return completed work to theirs files with the teacher for safekeeping. Those who did not achieve will have 7 days to resubmit work with improvements. Expectations Arrive on time for every class Attend class on a regular basis Be prepared for class ie. brings your equipment to every class Work steadily and to the best of your ability Do not waste your time or that of other students Understand and research your design briefs thoroughly Complete and hand in assignments on time Respect and care for the school equipment Show care and respect for your fellow students and Teachers HOMEWORK Purpose To revise some of the skills and techniques taught in class as well as finish off class work and give you a chance to create. Learn how to do research and logically express ideas and concepts. We encourage you to use computer programmes like SketchUp, ArchiCAD, Photoshop etc.. We want you, our students to achieve well by developing sound work habits and organising your time to include homework. Although there may be times when nothing is set formally students should use this as an opportunity to revise techniques they may not be sure of or to complete research requirements for future or current briefs. At this level students should be completing up to 30 minutes per night. Homework includes Research via internet and other sources Reading of all briefs and assessments Completion of work started in class Learning the terms, new language and its meanings associated with our subject Revise practice exercises where new techniques were not well. Plan time effectively (a homework/ study timetable) Use the homework diary as a matter of habit. Use a quiet room, a straight chair, a flat table and good light
