To explore the brief in the context of designing for a particular market. To analyse existing products in order to generate ideas for own designs. Introduction to Textiles Discuss textiles in our lives as a class and explain homework. Brief Introduce brief to class with group discussion to gain understanding. Product Analysis In pairs complete an analysis of an existing product using worksheets. Feedback and discuss the importance of analysis as a class. Extension Product comparison worksheet. What products are the most successful? Complete house textile worksheet naming all the products in and around the home. 2 2 To reinforce understanding of the importance of product analysis. To understand the importance of safe use of equipment in the textile rooms and be able to apply this knowledge. To be able to use the sewing machine safely. 3 To learn about the different types of decorative techniques and be able to apply these to their own fabric collage. Knowledge of how to achieve both machine and hand appliqué. - Key Words Recap from last week on product analysis completing key words worksheet. Health and Safety Discuss importance of Health and Safety as a class. Brainstorm on board. Whole class to draw straight, curved and right angle line on fabric square ready for practise sewing. ½ class to complete H&S worksheet. ½ class to watch a demonstration on how to use a machines safely. Then practise using the machines by sewing their lines which pre-drawn. Swap over and complete task. Recap on H&S by re-visiting worksheet completed and marking as class. Complete sewing machine worksheet labelling parts of the machine. As class mark homework. Recap on H&S. Fabric Collage & Applique Explain task to complete a fabric collage of decorative techniques (finish next week). Demonstrate how to complete an appliqué sample using felt by hand. Class to take 2 pre-cut shapes and attach 1 onto base fabric using technique shown. Take ½ class and demonstrate how to attach using machine. ½ class to complete by hand, half by machine. Swap and complete task. Group display of work completed. As class discuss what is successful and what needs improvement. Complete a hand embroidery sample of straight stitch, blanket stitch and cross stitch on felt square. Pupils must take a needle and thread home to use. Provide stitch card for support. Hand and Machine Embroidery Add to their fabric collage by using hand embroidery practised for homework. ½ class to embellish collage using machine embroidery following demonstration. Swap. Extension More able students to use embellishment e.g. beads to decorate their collage. Presentation Mount up fabric collage on A4 and annotate techniques used. In groups add comments to each others work as ways to improve on actual design using post-it notes. Produce a themeboard on textile monsters. Collect images from Internet or magazines/catalogues and present on an A4 sheet. Pupils should choose a variety of shapes to present. Title Monster Research. They should use key words to explain fabrics, colours, fillings, components used. What have they discovered from their homework? How are they made? What materials are used? Specification Discuss what a design specification is and why they are necessary. Pupils to complete their own design specifications for their product using worksheet. 4 6 To be able to interpret their research to create 4 design ideas which answer the specification points. Using moodboards and themeboard put a sticker on 4 images that they find most inspiration and write down ways that they could be incorporated into their own designs. Design Ideas Showing exemplar designs and shapes, pupils to produce 4 design ideas for a possible monster c mon. Discuss the need for annotation/labelling to explain designs. Finish designs with colour and then add annotation as discussed in class: fabric, filling, decorative technique, stitch, components. Discuss design ideas around table as a class. Final Proposal Explain working drawings and why they are needed in manufacture. Pupils to produce own drawing for their design using example on Powerpoint. This must include front and back views, dimensions, fabrics, components, filling, cutting list. Discuss how this information will be used next week for production of their patterns. Pupils to bring in any scrap material from old clothing, beads, buttons etc that they might like to use for their monster products. ASK PERMISSION before bringing anything in! Show example patterns which can be used and adapted and explain task to produce pattern. Pattern Dem and break into smaller tasks: 1 produce outline to scale, 2 label pieces, 3 add pattern markings. SEAM ALLOWANCE must be included on patterns. Pupils to produce a fabric/component list ready so materials can be organised for next week. Fill in plan of making chart so far. Higher Abilities Produce pattern using Mill Designer. Dem CAD package and explain main tools and how they are used. In pairs pupils to draw out body on CAD package and send to laser cutter to cut fabric for main body and features (continue into week 9). Recap from last week. Pupils to discuss what they did using their planning chart as a prompt. Cutting Out Demonstrate how to cut out safely and accurately. Pupils to cut out their fabric pieces. Ensure they are put in wallet and do not get lost. Fill in planning charts for this week. Research a designer from list (Powerpoint) who uses recycled materials when designing. Collect images of their work and explain how they use materials to create unique designs. Higher Abilities (Continued from week 8) In pairs pupils to draw out body on CAD package and send to laser cutter to cut fabric for main body and features. 7 12 To understand the importance of quality control checks. 13 Extension To be able to recognise care label symbols when looking at existing care labels and understand why care labels are used quality. Fill in planning chart Assembly and Filling Demonstrate how to pin, tack and machine front to back. Explain that a whole must be left for filling the product. Pupils to join main front and back together and then fill. Pin hole and stitch by hand. Spot dems where needed. G&T pupils may wish to make an opening on their monster c mon e.g. using Velcro or a zip. Evaluation / Final Assessment Verbal presentation and evaluation of their products as a class using prompt questions on Powerpoint. (if going onto extension weeks) Cut out a care label in a piece of you own clothing. Bring this in for next lesson. Make sure you get PERMISSION before cutting out the label!
