sewing tutorial sakura purse This little purse was inspired by sakura (cherry) blossoms and springtime in general. It features a snap closure and interesting curved shape at the opening. It also has complementing sakura applique that is completely optional. difficulty: makes: This calls for a few techniques, like snaps, darts, and appliqué, but it s nothing out of the ordinary one bag that is about 12 wide, 7 tall, and 3 deep materials & tools ¼ yd. of medium to heavy weight fabric for main purse bottom section (denim or canvas would be perfect I used a home décor canvas) ¼ yd. of medium to heavyweight contrast fabric for top section & straps (denim or canvas would be perfect I used interfaced linen) 1/3 yd. of lightweight fabric for lining (I used quilting cotton) ½ metal snap Either complementing fabric paint for the flower embellishments OR: Appliqué supplies: 10 x 10 scrap of appliqué fabric (cotton, felt, etc.) 10 x 10 piece of light or heavy duty fusible web Matching sewing thread Basic sewing tools (sewing machine, scissors, iron, needles, pins, fabric marker, seam ripper) before you begin: 1. Print out the project pattern, pages Assemble the printed pattern pieces 3. Lay out the pattern pieces on your fabric and cut them out 4. Mark the fabric pieces with the guidelines from the pattern 2 sew desu ne?
sewing tutorial 1 The first step here is applying your flower designs to one of the purse bottom pieces of your fabric. You can do this by using the flower template as a freezer paper stencil and painting them on (see the tutorial on that *here*) or you can appliqué them on with light or heavy duty fusible web. I personally used some light fusible web and did a zigzag stitch around each shape. Make sure the pieces are placed properly by using the guidelines from the pattern. 2 With your embellishments done, you can now sew on the upper section of your purse. Line up the straight edges of the purse top and purse bottom and sew the two pieces together. Repeat this with your remaining purse top and bottom pieces to create both sides of your purse. Press this seam open. 3 sew desu ne?
sewing tutorial Next is to create the darts! These little darts in the corner of the purse will help give your finished purse some shape. Fold the corner of your purse so the legs of the dart match up, then sew down the leg of the dart to create some depth for your purse. Cut the darts open down the middle and press them flat. 3 Take both of your purse front and back pieces and line them up so all the raw edges match. Sew along the curved edge that encompasses the bottom and sides of the purse. Leave the top section with the semi-circle shaped notch free so you can turn the purse right side out later. Press open the seam you ve just sewn as best as you can despite the odd shape. Repeat steps 2-4 for your lining pieces as well. Be sure that you leave an opening in one side of the lining for turning the whole purse right side out later in step 8. 4 sew desu ne? 4
sewing tutorial 5 With your purse almost finished, next is the straps. They re made a rather simple way by just folding and sewing. Take your strap piece and fold under each long edge by 5/8 (toward the wrong side) and iron it firmly in place. Then fold the entire strap piece in half lengthwise (with wrong sides together) and iron it again firmly, leaving you with one long, skinny strip. Sew the folded edges together with an edge stitch and your strap is complete! Repeat this with your other strap piece, and you ve got a perfect pair! 6 With your straps done, you can baste them to the top edge of your purse. Turn your main purse right side out, then baste the end of one strap along the guidelines of one side of your front purse. Then take the other end of the strap and baste it to the remaining guideline on the front of your purse. Be sure the strap doesn t get twisted along the way. Then repeat this with the back of your purse and your remaining strap. 5 sew desu ne?
sewing tutorial For the perfect closure to our purse we re making a little tab and an added snap. All you need to do to make the tab is align your two tab pieces together with right sides facing. Sew along the long curved edge of the tab piece, leaving the short straight edge open for turning the tab right side out. Then clip and/or notch the seam allowance of the seam you just made, turn the tab right side out, and press it flat. 7 Just like with the straps, 8 we re going to baste the tab to the top portion of your purse. Be sure you baste it to the back side of the purse, following the pattern guidelines. This will allow it to fold over to the front of your purse where you can see the adorable snap closure :) sew desu ne? 6
sewing tutorial 9 Now we can finally sew the main bag to the lining. Nestle the outer fabric portion of the purse into the lining with right sides facing, then line up the top edges. Once you have the edges properly lined up, sew around the entire perimeter, pivoting at the corners and going over the side seams. When you finish, clip the corners and the curves of your new seam, then turn the whole baby right side out from the opening you have in the lining. You ll want to poke the corners with a chopstick or similar turning tool to make the edges look crisp. Then press the edges nice and firmly so it looks sharp and neat. Around this time, you will also want to go back and sew up the opening left in your lining. You can do this either with a handsewn ladder stitch or just doing a quick edge stitch with your machine. 10 While your top edge is looking crisp, you ll want to edge stitch along the upper edge of the purse to keep it looking that way, and so the lining doesn t want to peek out occasionally while you re using the purse ^-~ Make sure your tab and straps are moved out of the way while you re doing this. 7 sew desu ne?
sewing tutorial Just one more detail and 11 you re done! Install the prong side of your snap on the end of your tab where the pattern indicates, then install the socket side of your snap in the middle of your purse front where the pattern indicates. They ll match up perfectly and you ll be left with a completed purse! Now go show off your work because YOU RE DONE! sew desu ne? 8
