Article 4: Directions for a Stocking with a Cuff and Without a Cuff Be sure to refer to Article 1 that provides an overview of the 3 Martelli Stocking Templates. Interested in purchasing the templates? Go to and search Stockings. Read all of the directions first. Check out the Stocking Video at and A. Stocking with a Cuff from a Separate Fabric This method stitches up really fast and really easy and is a great way to add a cuff from a different fabric. Plus, you can easily add an applique, monogram, embroidery or embellishment to the cuff. These are so simple you ll want to make lots! Make one 1 st to fine tune your method then make the others Assembly Style. I ve used pics from several projects so you ll notice different fabrics throughout. Note: When sewing these stockings, use whatever seam allowance you like. Just be consistent throughout. I like a 3/8. On the Elf Stocking, it s best to use a ¼ or 3/8 at the most. When stitching, be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end. Christmas Stocking Template Elf Stocking Template Paw Print Stocking Template You need: One of the 3 Martelli Stocking Templates, Martelli Rotary Cutter*, Martelli Cutting Mat Optional: 12 x 2 ½ fabric or 12 ribbon for loop Optional Cuff Embellishment Embroidery Machine, Iron-On, Monogram, Felt, Tools: Marking Pen or Chalk Tool, Embroidery Scissors or Snippets * The 45mm Rotary Cutter will work with all of these templates. If using the Elf Stocking, you ll have better success with the 28mm. If cutting pre-quilted material or multiple layers using the Christmas Stocking Template or the Paw Print Stocking Template, the 60mm works best. Refer to video for more. Traditional Stocking Fabric Elf Stocking Fabric Paw Template Stocking Fabric 15 W x 24 H or 2/3 yard - 2 lining pieces at least 15 W x 24 H or 2/3 yard - 2 cuff pieces 9 x Fold in half to 10 ½ x 4 ½. 13 W x 18 H or ½ yard - 2 lining pieces at least 13 W x 18 H or 1/2 yard - 2 cuff pieces cut 6 ½ x 9. Fold in half to 6 ½ x 4 ½. You may choose to shorten the cuff. 11 W x 21 H or 2/3 yard - 2 lining pieces at least 11 W x 21 H or 2/3 yard - 2 cuff pieces cut 9 x 9. Fold in half to 9 4 ½. You may choose to shorten the cuff or even the stocking.

Cutting the Outside and the Lining: Note: Do you want the toe to go the right or left? If using the same fabric on front and back of stocking, it won t matter if you cut right sides together or wrong sides together. If using a different fabric on the front than back then check the placement before cutting. You might need to cut from the wrong side of the fabric. If fabric has a direction, be sure to lay out fabric with the template in the correct direction. This is especially important if doing Assembly Style and folding multiple layers to fabric to cut. Left: Wrong! Right: Correct! 1. Cut 2 outside fabrics and 2 inside lining fabrics. Here, I am cutting both the outside stocking fabric and the inside lining fabric at the same time. 2. Use a Marking Pencil or Chalk to draw around the curves of the template before cutting or after cutting. This is especially important with the Elf Stocking Template. 3. Use scissors to finish any uncut areas. You ll end up with 2 linings and 2 outside fabrics. Cutting the Cuff A cuff is a great place to add a name, monogram or applique. You can use your embroidery machine, a Cutting Machine, iron-ons, felt, etc. If using an embroidery machine, hoop cuff fabric and embroider first before cutting to size. If ironing on or sewing by sewing machine or by hand, cut the cuff fabric, fold in half then press. This line works as a guide for placement. You can stitch the cuff to the stocking outside and lining then add the embellishment. Just be sure to do so before stitching the 2 stockings together. The cuff will be folded down over the stocking so if adding an embellishment be sure that it s going the correct direction. 1. Using measurements provided above, cut 2 cuffs. 2. Fold in half and press. The cuff width should be the same width as the top width of the stocking. For the Elf Stocking, you may want to vary the height of the Cuff depending on the look you re going for. For the Paw Stocking, you might want to adjust both the cuff and the stocking height. See pics for inspiration! BTW- those pointy cuffs were attached separately so can t be made using this method.

Stitching the Outside to the Cuff and the Cuff to the Lining: 1. Using the toe as your guide, take an outside fabric, a lining fabric and one cuff fabric unfolded. Lay them out on your mat. Be sure right sides are up and toes are going in the same direction. 2. Pin or zip clip right sides together of the outside top and the cuff. 3. Stitch cuff to outside. Backstitch at beginning and end. 4. Take the other side of the cuff and pin or clip it to the stocking lining top. Stitch with same seam as earlier. 5. Repeat the process for the other 3 pieces. 6. Press seams open. Adding a Loop Loops are optional and can be made out of a variety of materials ribbons, elastics, fabrics as shown here. Adjust to your desired length. 1. Cut loop fabric 12 x 2 ½. 2. As with bias tape, fold 1 side to center and other side in to center and fold on top of itself. Press. 3. Topstitch layers together about 1/8 from edge. 4. Fold loop in half and pin anywhere from ½ to 1 from heel side at top between the lining and the cuff. Or.. you can add a loop from a ribbon or elastic headband and attach with a button later! Sewing the Front and Back Together 1. Place the 2 pieces right sides together and pin or clip all around the sides. Mark about a 2 area on the bottom or that will be used for turning. 2. At the sewing machine, stitch around the 2 pieces except in the turning area. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end. Note: When stitching, be sure that the loop doesn t get caught where it doesn t belong.

1. Place the 2 pieces right sides together and pin or clip all around the sides. Mark about a 2 area on the bottom or that will be used for turning. 2. At the sewing machine, stitch around the 2 pieces except in the turning area. Backstitch. Note: When stitching, be sure that loop doesn t get caught where it doesn t belong. 3. After stitching, use our Snippets or Embroidery Scissors to clip any curved areas close but not into the seam allowance. Turning Right Sides Out 1. Place hand inside turning area and turn stocking right sides out. Maneuver fabric with your fingers to push out seams and give shape. 2. You might even want to press a bit here as well. 3. With a sewing machine, serger or hand needle, stitch the turning area closed. 4. Push the lining into the stocking. Finger the fabric to give the Stocking a pleasing shape. 5. Fold over cuff and position it so that loop is appropriately placed. 6. Once seams are nice, give everything a good press so that seams, toes, heel and cuff are crisp. With the Elf Stocking, you might want to stuff the toe with batting to keep that cute curve! 7. Admire your stocking. 8. Then show it off! 9. Once others see it, you ll have lots more to make. Use the Assembly Method to speed up the process.

B. Stocking without a Cuff This method is even faster because there is no additional cuff to cut or sew! As suggested with the previous style, these are really good to make lots using the Assembly Style Method. Make one first to see how it goes together. This method works well with any of the 3 Martelli Templates: the Christmas Stocking, the Elf and the Paw Print. If you want to add a cuff you can simply fold the lining down over the outside and use it as a cuff. Just be careful though as directional print fabrics will be upside down (as shown in the video!) I ve used pics from several projects so you ll notice different fabrics throughout. Note: When sewing these stockings, use whatever seam allowance you like. Just be consistent throughout. I like a 3/8. On the Elf Stocking, it s best to use a ¼ or 3/8 at the most. When stitching, be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end. Read all of the directions first and check out the Stocking Video at & You need: One of the 3 Martelli Stocking Templates, Martelli Rotary Cutter*, Martelli Cutting Mat Optional: 12 x 2 ½ fabric or 12 ribbon for loop Optional Cuff Embellishment Embroidery Machine, Iron-On, Monogram, Felt, Tools: Marking Pen or Chalk Tool, Embroidery Scissors or Snippets * The 45mm Rotary Cutter will work with all of these templates. 6 s 1. Stitching the Outside Stocking to the Inside Lining: 1. Take one of the outside fabrics and find the matching lining fabric. Toes should be going in the same direction. Pin top edge to lining fabric right sides together. 2. Repeat with the other 2 pieces. 3. Using a 3/8 (or whatever you prefer) seam allowance, stitch the outside and lining pieces together. Backstitch at each side. 4. Repeat for the other side. 5. Press. Adding an Embellishment if you Choose to Fold Down to a Cuff If you choose to turn down the lining to create a cuff, you can add embellishment later by hand sewing or using a fabric glue. But if you want to machine sew or embroider, you ll need to do that now - prior to sewing the front and back together. The ric rac can be added after with fabric glue. The pomp oms would be better stitched at the same time as you sew the outside stocking to the inside lining.

Sewing the Front and Back Together If you like the idea of the Coffee Bean Bags, you might want to use a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine or use a serger so that you won t have to deal with unraveling of the fabric. 1. Place the 2 pieces right sides together and pin or clip all around the sides. 2. Mark about a 2 area on the bottom or that will be used for turning. I turn my pins sideways so I ll remember not to stitch here. 3. At the sewing machine, stitch around the 2 pieces except in the turning area. Backstitch. 4. After stitching, use our Snippets or Embroidery Scissors to clip any curved areas close but not into the seam allowance. Or skip this step completely by using a zigzag stitch or a serger. Turning Right Sides Out 1. Place hand inside turning area and turn stocking right sides out. Maneuver fabric with your fingers to push out seams and give shape. 2. You might press a bit here as well. 3. With a sewing machine, serger or hand needle, stitch the turning area closed. 4. Push the lining into the stocking. Finger the fabric to give the stocking a pleasing shape. Once seams are nice, give everything a good press so that seams, toes, heel and cuff are crisp. With the Elf Stocking, you might want to stuff the toe with batting to keep that cute curve!

Adding a Cuff With this method a cuff is optional. Fold lining and stocking outside down to see if you like a cuff. You can change the look of the stocking pretty dramatically just by changing the amount od cuff. Remember that this method won t work for directional fabrics! 4. Fold loop in half and pin anywhere up to an inch from the heel edge at the top. 5. Stitch using an X or a square to hold loop in place. Or you can hand stitch and add a button or jingle bell to cover your stitches. Once you add a loop, you might want to stitch all around to keep everything in place. This is especially helpful if you choose to have just a small bit of the lining showing. Done! Take a moment to admire your stocking then starting hitting up your local coffee shops because this one is going to be requested a lot!
