Cut the following pieces from your coordinating fabric and label with the letter indicated: Cut to size: Label as piece: Placement of fabric 7 x 7 B Lower inside lining 7 x 3 D Upper inside lining 7 x 9 I Back lining Cut the following pieces from your batting and label with the letter indicated: Cut to size: Label as piece: Placement of fabric 7 x7 C Lower front batting 7 x 2 F Upper front batting 7 x 9 H Back batting If you are making a back pocket, fold the fabric in half to 7 x 7. Open it up and press the fusible interfacing to the inside of the pocket. Set aside. Strap: You will need the following supplies: 2 1/8" wide strip of fabric which will make a ½ wide strap. If you would like a wider strap, cut fabric width accordingly. To determine the length to cut, measure from your hip, up and across the opposite shoulder, and back to Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 3
your hip. Add two inches for seams. Use that measurement to determine the strip length. 1" or wider strip of fusible interfacing - the same length and width as the fabric above. 2 1/8" or wider x 4" long strip of fabric 1 or wider x 4" long strip of fusible interfacing- the same length and width as the fabric above. Making the strap: Take your strip of fabric and turn it face down. Center the fusible interfacing, shiny side down, on the fabric. Press with a hot iron. Fold both long edges of the strip to the center and press. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 4
Fold strip in half, lengthwise, pressing and pinning as you go. Topstitch along the length of both sides of the strap. The strap does not need finished ends. Put the strap aside for now and continue with the instructions. We ll tell you how to attach it later! Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 5
Let s get stitching! 1) Hoop your stabilizer. 2) Sew the first set of stitches to create placement lines for the zipper. If you are using heat away or water soluble topping you may have to float a piece of tearaway stabilizer underneath to start the stitching. (Shown in picture). 3) Center the zipper inside the placement lines. Make sure each end of the zipper extends at least 1 past the ends of the placement lines. Tape down the ends of the zipper, keeping tape outside the placement lines on both ends. You can also place tape on the top and bottom edges of the zipper tape to hold it more securely. Sew the next set of stitches to tack down the zipper. Remove all tape and carefully tearaway floating stabilizer, if used. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 6
4) Remove the hoop from your machine. Take fabric piece A and place it face down, aligning it with the bottom side of the zipper placement line, covering the zipper, as shown. Tape in place along the edges. If you re using a directional print, you can make sure the direction is correct by flipping the fabric down over the zipper, and right side up. Be sure to flip it back up after peeking! 5) Turn the hoop over to the back. Take fabric piece B and place it, face down, aligned with the bottom edge of the zipper placement line, covering the zipper, as shown. This piece will be on the same side of the zipper as the front piece. Tape in place along the edges and/or use spray adhesive. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 7
6) Replace the hoop on your machine, making sure the lining fabric stays in the correct position on the back of the hoop. Sew the next set of stitches to tack down the fabrics to the zipper. Remove the hoop from your machine and turn it over to the back. Remove the tape from across the bottom edges of the fabrics, near the stitch line. 7) Take batting piece C. Working on the front of the hoop, place the batting below the zipper, butting the short edge against the stitch line you just created. Tape in place along the sides. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 8
8) Take the fabric at the top of the hoop and fold it down over the batting piece, finger pressing the seam to make a crisp edge. Tape in place along the edges to secure. Leave the back lining where it is for now. 9) Replace the hoop on your machine, making sure the lining fabric on the back of the hoop stays in place. Sew the next set of stitches to create the cross hatch stitches. 10) Sew the next set of stitches to create ribbon placement lines where indicated by the arrows. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 9
11) Place the ribbon straight across the bag, centering it inside the ribbon placement lines. Sew the next set of stitches to tack down the ribbon. 12) Sew the next set of stitches to create a placement circle for the applique. 13) Place your 3 piece of fabric over the circle. Tape in place on the edges of the fabric. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 10
14) Sew the next set of stitches to tack down the fabric and create a cutting line. 15) Remove the hoop from your machine. Trim around the circle, cutting as close as you can to the circle without cutting through the stitches. 16) Replace the hoop on your machine, making sure the lining fabric stays in place on the back of the hoop. Sew the next 3 sets of stitches to complete the circle applique and monogram. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 11
17) Remove the hoop from your machine and turn it over to the back. Fold down the lining piece toward the bottom of the hoop, pulling it taut. Tape in place along the edges and bottom and/or use spray adhesive. 18) Still working on the back of the hoop, take fabric piece D and place it face down, aligned with the top edge of the zipper placement line, covering the zipper, as shown. Tape in place along the edges and/or use spray adhesive. 19) Turn hoop over to the front. Take fabric piece E. Place it face down, aligned with the top edge of the zipper placement line, covering the zipper, as shown. Tape in place along the edges. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 12
20) Replace the hoop on your machine making sure the lining fabric stays in place on the back of the hoop. Sew the next set of stitches to tack down the fabrics to the zipper. Remove the hoop from your machine and turn it over to the back. Remove the tape from across the top edge of the fabrics, near the stitch line. 21) Working on the front of the hoop, take batting piece F and place the long edge of the batting above the top of the zipper, butting the long edge against the stitch line you just created. Tape in place along the top and bottom. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 13
22) Take the face down fabric piece and fold it up toward the top of the hoop, over the batting piece, finger pressing the seam to make a crisp edge. Tape in place along the edges to secure. Leave the back lining as is for now. 23) Sew the next set of stitches to create the cross hatch stitches. 24) Sew the next set of stitches to create placements lines for the short straps. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 14
25) Cut two 2 lengths from the short strap you made earlier, or use two pieces of ribbon. Slide your D-rings, or other chosen rings through each 2 strap, then fold the straps in half. Place the folded straps over the placement lines. The raw edges of the straps should be outside the bag outline and the rings should be facing into the bag, as shown. Tape in place well. The tape can cover the placement lines, it will tear away easily. Make sure that the rings are facing the center of the case and are nowhere near the case outline - you do not want your machine to stitch over them! Place a piece of tape over the D-Rings to keep them in place. The long strap will be completed after you finish the bag on your embroidery machine. Stitch next set of stitches to tack down the straps. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 15
26) Remove the hoop from your machine and turn it over to the back. Fold the lining piece to the top of the hoop pulling it taut. Tape in place along the edges and/or use spray adhesive. Replace the hoop on your machine. 27) This step is VERY IMPORTANT! Turn the hoop over to the front and UNZIP the zipper pull about 2/3 of the way across - stopping the zipper pull as shown. If you forget this step, your zipper pull will not work in your finished case! 28) OPTIONAL. If you re attaching a back pocket, take the pocket piece you created earlier. Lay it over the project with the folded edge aligned over the zipper teeth, where shown. Tape in place along the edges. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 16
29) Working on the front of your hoop, place fabric piece G over the entire bag, right side down. Tape in place along the edges. Place batting piece H on top of this fabric. Tape in place along the edges. 30) Sew the next set of stitches, creating a line of stitches at the bottom of the bag. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 17
31) Remove the hoop from your machine. Working on the back side of the hoop, take the final fabric piece I and place it right side down over the project. Tape in place along all four edges and/or use spray adhesive. 32) Replace the hoop on your machine, making sure the lining fabric stays in place on the back of the hoop. Sew the final set of stitches. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 18
33) Remove the case from your hoop. Trim a 1/4" border around the edges of the case and clip the corners. 34) Turn your case inside out through the hole at the bottom of the bag. Whipstitch the opening in the lining. 35) Remove the stabilizer from around the zipper. If you used tearaway stablilizer, you may find tweezers help pull the stabilizer from the stitch lines. Turn the bag inside out through the zipper and poke out the corners well. Copyright Pickle Pie Designs 2013 Page 19
36) Take the remaining portion of strap. Insert 1 of the strap through the bale of your clasp. Fold this raw edge in twice and stitch in place. Repeat process on the other end of the strap. 37) Attach the clasps to the rings on the purse and you are finished! We hope you enjoyed this great in-the-hoop embroidery design from Pickle Pie Designs! Please note that this design is copyrighted and may not be resold, shared or altered in any way.
