1 Child s Purse An In-the-Hoop Project Shoulder bag in two sizes, with optional quilting. You may also choose to close the bag with Velcro or with a snap or other type of closure. You will be sewing thru the coils several times while making the bag. I purchase my zippers from Purchase all zippers in the longest length you think you will need. You will be cutting them off when making the bag anyway. The extra cost is minute. You get better prices when purchasing all one length. They are very good to work with. They will even make up a random assortment of colors for you if you give them a call. Extra Important! This design is very bulky, especially when adding batting to any of the layers. This may cause a problem with some machines. Please stay with your machine at all times. Make sure you read page 3 ABOUT BULK before starting your project. 3 About Bulk Bulk can be a problem for some machines. Do NOT add batting to any piece other than the bag front until you have determined that your machine can handle the extra thicknesses. Janome machine owners, see the text box at the bottom of this page. Here are some things you can try to reduce the bulk. Use a thin cutaway stabilizer like polymesh. You can use a tearaway stabilizer on most pieces. Do NOT use tearaway stabilizer on the purse back. It will not support the weight of the project. Use a regular lining material used for suits and dresses instead of quilting cotton for the linings. Use a very thin batting that will compress when quilted. Pellon fleece is a good choice. Terradon Embroidery carries a wonderful fusible fleece that will give a very nice quilted effect without adding a lot of bulk. Do not use pre-quilted fabric. Keep the shoulder strap ½ wide or less. When placing the strap, do not overlap the strap and the flap. Don t pile the shoulder strap up at the center of the bag in the final step. Try to keep the strap distributed so that the whole surface is as flat as possible. Use a foot on your machine that hops instead of one that floats over the top. It will adjust better to the different thicknesses in the seams. Some machines have settings that will allow you to increase the foot height. Stay with your at all times while stitching this design, especially when stitching the Purse Back during steps 6, 7, 8 and 9. JANOME MACHINE OWNERS Janome machines in particular do not have enough clearance under their foot to handle the bulk that results with this design. It is recommended you do not use any batting in this bag and to skip the quilting option. If you do choose to quilt the bag, quilt only the front piece. Warm and Natural is too thick to use as batting for your machine. Use a VERY thin poly batting such as Pellon fleece which will compress when quilted. Please stay with your machine at all times when stitching this design! 3 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

4 Child Purse Flap Front Optional 40 wt rayon or poly thread If you are not going to stitch a monogram /design onto the purse flap or if you wish to quilt the front of the flap. Otherwise, you should skip to the next section Child Purse Flap with Velcro Closure starting on page 6 or Child Purse Flap with Other Closure starting on page 11. Hoop midweight cutaway stabilizer. Load file for the front of the flap ChildPrse_*_FlapFront. You can use a 5x7 (130x180mm) hoop for the flap. 1 Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. It also includes the placement for support for the fastener. 2A Optional: You may place a thin batting on top of the stabilizer before placing the fabric in this step. It will add dimension if doing the options quilting in step # 3. Warning! See page 3 About Bulk before adding batting in this step. Place the Flap Front, piece A, FACE UP over the placement stitching. Leave a seam allowance of about ¼ ½ all the way around the edges. Use kids glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or tape to hold the lining in place. Removing the hoop from the machine can make it easier to place the fabric, but it is not necessary. If you do remove the hoop, place it on a flat surface as you work. This will help keep the stabilizer from pulling away from the hoop. 2C Stitch Color #2, tacking down the fabric. 3 Stitch the optional quilting pattern 4 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

5 4 Add your monogram or design to the flap, placing it as desired. Be sure to allow about ½ inside curved stitching line for the seam allowance. The straight stitched line is the seam line for the top of the flap. I included a + sign as Color #4. Use it to help center the design and then delete or skip it. It does not get stitched. 5 Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. Trim excess fabric and stabilizer leaving about ½ fabric outside the stitching lines. Lay aside. 6 Child Purse Flap Back Velcro Closure 40 wt rayon or poly thread If using a snap or other closure, use instructions for Child s Purse Flap Other Closure, starting on page 11. Hoop midweight cutaway stabilizer. Load file for the flap ChildPrse_*_FlpBck_V. 1 Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. It also includes the placement for support for the fastener. 2A Cut 2 pieces of scrap of cutaway stabilizer approximately 2x2 square. Place the 2 squares over the small stitched square on the stabilizer in the hoop. You can use a little kid s washable glue stick to hold the stabilizer in place. 2B Removing the hoop from the machine can make it easier to place the stabilizer and also the fabric in the next step, but it is not necessary. If you do remove the hoop, place it on a flat surface. This will help keep the stabilizer from pulling away from the hoop. Place the Flap Lining, part B, FACE UP over the placement stitches, covering all stitches. Leave a seam allowance of about ¼ ½ all the way around. Use kids glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or tape to hold the lining in place. If you use masking/ painter s tape to secure the edges of the lining to the stabilizer, try to keep the tape outside the placement stitching, as that is where the next stitching will go. Some machines do not like to stitch through tape. 2C Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #2, the tackdown stitches to hold the lining in place. 7 3 Place the hooked side of the Velcro over the stitched placement square, hook side up. You can use a little kid s washable glue stick to hold the Velcro in place. Or you may use tape to hold it at the extreme edges. Stitch Color #3 to sew the Velcro in place. 4A Remove the hoop from the machine, leaving the project in the hoop. Place it on a flat surface. Place the fabric for the front of the flap (or the front you prepared with a design or monogram ) FACE DOWN over the project in the hoop, covering all stitching. Leave a seam allowance of about ¼ ½ all the way around. Tape the fabric down around the edges to hold it in place. 4B If using a prepared front, match the outer stitching on the rectangle of the front to the outer rectangle on the lining. The stitching lines at the top should line up on both pieces. Tape the fabric down around the edges to hold it in place. Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #4 to stitch the seam around the outer edges of the flap. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. 5B Trim all layers close to the zig-zag stitching on the curved edge. If you turn the flap over so you can see the stabilizer, you ll be able to see the placement stitching for the top of the flap. Trim all layers close to the placement stitching on the straight edge. Press seams to set. Turn the flap right side out. Press carefully and lay aside. Continue with Child s Purse Front Velcro Closure starting on page 8. 7 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

Hoop midweight cutaway stabilizer. Load file for the front ChildPrse_*_Front_V. 1 Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. It also includes the placement for support for the fastener. 2A Cut 2 pieces of scrap of cutaway stabilizer approximately 2x2 square. Place the 2 squares over the small stitched square on the stabilizer in the hoop. You can use a little kid s washable glue stick to hold the stabilizer in place. Removing the hoop from the machine can make it easier to place the stabilizer and also the fabric in the next step, but it is not necessary. If you do remove the hoop, place it on a flat surface. This will help keep the stabilizer from pulling away from the hoop. 2B Optional: Place Front Batting, piece F, over the placement stitches. Align one long edge of the batting along the stitching line on the left side of the hoop the stitching line with the gap. This is the top of the pocket. The other long edge should touch or slightly cover the line of stitching on the right side (bottom of the bag). It will cover the placement stitches on the short edges by about ½ on both sides. You may use kids glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or tape to hold the batting in place. 2C Note: Fabric Purse A 8 x 11.25; Fabric Purse B 8.5 x 11.5 Place the Purse Front, piece C, FACE UP over the placement stitches and optional batting. Align the bottom of the fabric (short edge)along the line of stitching on the right side of the hoop. The top of the fabric will lay across the left edge of the hoop, over the embroidery arm. Cover the placement stitches with about ¼ ½ of extra material on the top and bottom (long) edges. You may use kids glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or tape to hold the fabric in place. 8 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

9 2D Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #2, the tackdown stitches to hold the fabric in place. It will stitch a basting stitch along the left side (top of the pocket) and then continue around the other 3 sides. The placement for the Velcro also stitches in this step. 3 Optional. Stitch Color #3, the quilting pattern 4 Place the loop (soft) side of the Velcro over the stitched placement square, loop side up. You can use a little kid s washable glue stick to hold the Velcro in place. Or you may use tape to hold it at the extreme edges (as shown in the picture). Stitch Color #4 to sew the Velcro in place. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. Right side of front 5B Trim excess fabric and stabilizer leaving about ½ fabric outside the stitching lines on the sides and bottom of the pocket. ( You can ignore the placement lines on the stabilizer now. The important lines are stitched on the fabric.) Turn over to the wrong side. The basting line across the center is the fold line. Trim away the stabilizer above the basting line. DO NOT trim the fabric. This will be the lining for the pocket! Wrong side of front 9 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

10 5C Fold the pocket in half on the basting line. Press. Remove the basting stitches from the folded edge. 5D Lay aside. Continue with Child s Purse Back starting on page Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

11 Child Purse Flap Back Other Closure 40 wt rayon or poly thread If using a Velcro closure, use instructions for Child s Purse Flap Velcro, starting on page 6. Hoop midweight cutaway stabilizer. Load file for the flap ChildPrse_*_FlapBack_NV. 1 Stitch Color #1, the placement outline. It also includes the placement for support for the fastener. 2A Place the Flap Lining, part B, FACE UP over the placement stitches, covering all stitches. Leave a seam allowance of about ¼ ½ all the way around. Use kids glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or tape to hold the lining in place. Place the fabric for the front of the flap (or the front you prepared with a design or monogram ) FACE DOWN over the project in the hoop, covering all stitching. Leave a seam allowance of about ¼ ½ all the way around. Tape the fabric down around the edges to hold it in place. If using a prepared front, match the outer stitching on the rectangle of the front to the outer rectangle on the lining. The stitching lines at the top should line up on both pieces. 12 4B Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #4 to stitch the seam around the outer edges of the flap. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine. Remove the project from the hoop. 5B Trim all layers close to the zig-zag stitching on the curved edge. If you turn the flap over so you can see the stabilizer, you ll be able to see the placement stitching for the top of the flap. Trim all layers close to the placement stitching on the straight edge. Press seams to set. Turn the flap right side out. Press carefully and lay aside. Continue with Child s Purse Front Other Closure starting on page Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

Right side after trimming 5B Trim excess fabric and stabilizer leaving about ½ fabric outside the stitching lines on the sides and bottom of the pocket. ( You can ignore the placement lines on the stabilizer now. The important lines are stitched on the fabric.) Trim only the stabilizer above the basting line at the top of the pocket. DO NOT trim the fabric. This will be the lining for the pocket! 5C Fold the pocket in half on the basting line. Wrong side after properly trimmed Press. Remove the basting stitches from the folded edge. 5D Lay aside. Continue with Child s Purse Back starting on page Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

15 Child s Purse Back All Closures 40 wt rayon or poly thread Please read the information about reducing bulk on page 3 before beginning this part of your bag! When Top and Bottom are referenced, these indicate the long sides of the project, not the directionality of the hoop. Hoop midweight cutaway stabilizer. Load file for purse back ChildPrse_*_Back. 1 Stitch Color #1 the placement outline - on the hooped stabilizer. 2A Remove the hoop from the machine. Turn it over so the back of the hoop is face up. Place on a flat surface. Place one Lining, piece E, FACE UP over the placement stitches, covering all stitches. This is the lining you will see when you look inside the zipper. Use kids glue stick, temporary spray adhesive, or tape to hold the lining in place. I use painter s tape to secure the edges of the lining to the stabilizer. This keeps the edges of the fabric from flipping over when placing the hoop back on the machine. Try to keep the tape outside the placement stitching, as that is where the next stitching will go. Some machines do not like to stitch through tape. 2B Turn the hoop over to the right side. Place the hoop on a flat surface. Optional: You may place a thin batting on top of the stabilizer before placing the fabric in this step. It will add dimension if doing the options quilting in step # 3. Warning! See page 3 About Bulk before adding batting in this step. Place the Back, piece D, FACE UP over the placement stitches. All edges will overlap the placement stitches about 3 to 2". You may use painters tape to hold the fabric edges in place. 2C Place the hoop back on the machine. Make sure the lining is still flat and that no corners have turned under. Stitch Color #2, the tackdown to keep the front and lining pieces in place and create the placement stitches for the zipper. Note: Stitching in a contrasting thread color will make it easier to find the alignment marks in later steps. 15 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

16 3A Remove the hoop from the machine and place it right side up on a flat surface. Carefully trim away the fabric (and optional batting) inside the smaller rectangle in the zipper placement area. Do NOT trim into the stabilizer. It must stay in place to hold the zipper stitching. 3B Turn the hoop over to the wrong side and place it on a flat surface. Trim away the fabric from inside the smaller rectangle in the zipper placement area of the lining. Do NOT trim into the stabilizer. Be sure NOT to put the zipper down yet! Turn the hoop back to the right side and return it to the machine. 3C Optional: Stitch Color #3, the quilting pattern. 4 Stitch Color #4, a zigzag over the cut edges of the zipper opening. This finishes the cut edges and helps keep the strings from catching in the zipper. 5A Remove the hoop from the machine and place it right side up on a flat surface. Apply Dritz Wonder Tape to the long edges of the zipper placement area. Carefully remove the paper covering from the tape. You may apply it to the back side of the zipper tape if you prefer. Tip. After applying the Wonder Tape, use a straight pin to score across the center of the tape, edge to edge. Peel the paper away from the center outward. If you can t find Wonder Tape or it makes your machine gunky, you can use scotch tape to fasten the zipper to the front of the bag. (I ve used scotch tape along the edge in the picture). You will need to stop the machine after the straight stitching and before the decorative stitching begins to remove the tape. 16 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

17 5B Apply Zipper: Not all zippers are the same width. It is up to you to get it centered and straight. Vertical Hoop. Place the closed zipper, FACE UP, TAB to the Top of the hoop, the stop at the bottom. Center the zipper coils between the zipper placement lines. The zipper area should be in the right half of your hoop. Horizontal Hoop. Place the closed zipper, FACE UP, TAB to the LEFT of the hoop, centered between the zipper placement lines. The zipper area will be in the upper half of the hoop. Very Important Make SURE that the metal zipper tab and the metal stop are placed well outside of the stitching area!!! You don=t want your foot or needle hitting those hard pieces of metal. 5C Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #5, the decorative stitches on the zipper tape. You might notice that I don t always get my zipper perfectly centered every time, but it still looks nice as long as you are fairly close! If you used scotch tape, don t forget to stop the machine after the 2 rows of straight stitching are finished to hold the zipper. Remove the tape and continue stitching. 6A Remove the hoop from the machine and place it right side up on a flat surface. OPEN THE ZIPPER HALF WAY! 18 The colored lines on this image represent small stitched lines you will see on your back piece at this time. Refer back to this image for help when placing each piece in the following steps. 6B Adding the Flap Place the prepared Purse Flap FACE DOWN over the purse back, raw edges at the top of the purse, outside of the stitching lines. Center the flap between the two marks set closest to the center at the top of the piece. Use the RED lines in the image at the top of this page. Match the seam line at the top of the flap with the imaginary line that runs horizontally between the two marks that are closest to the top edge. Use the BLUE lines in the image. Tape the flap in place along the long edge and at several places on the curved edge. 6C Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #6, stitching the flap in place. 7A Adding the Shoulder Strap Remove the hoop from the machine and place it right side up on a flat surface. Center each end of the cut edge of the shoulder strap between the two stitched lines closest to the outer edges at the top of the bag (see picture inset). Use the GREEN marks in the image at the top of this page. The cut end should extend about ½ above the tackdown stitching. If the strap has a right and wrong side, the right side should be facing UP. Tape the shoulder strap to the bag across the ends, outside of the stitching area. 7B Return the hoop to the machine. 19 8A Adding the Purse Front Remove the hoop from the machine and place it right side up on a flat surface Place the prepared Purse Front FACE DOWN over the project in the hoop. The Velcro side is against the purse back. Line this piece up so the folded edge meets the short set of stitch lines near the top of the purse back the 2 nd set of lines from the top (see picture inset). Use the PURPLE lines in the image at the top of page 18. Line the stitching on the sides and bottom of the purse front up with the stitching on the purse back s sides and bottom. Tape the front to the back along the side and bottom edges. CHECK THAT THE ZIPPER IS HALF-WAY OPEN!!! 8B Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #8, attaching the front to the back. 9A Remove the hoop from the machine and place it right side up on a flat surface. Position the strap at least 1 inside the side and bottom edges. Try not to bunch it up right over the zipper area, but more towards the bottom edge of the purse. Watch carefully that the strap does not shift into the seam allowance of 3/8 near where it is stitched at the top edge. You can use tape to hold the strap in place. 9B Add the Purse Lining Place one Lining, piece E, FACE DOWN over the entire assemblage in the hoop, making sure you leave ¼ to ½ of fabric around all edges outside of the current stitching lines. This is the lining you will see when you look inside the purse, directly under the flap. Tape the edges in place outside the tackdown stitching lines. 19 Child s Purse 2011, Pegboard Crafts

20 9C Adding the Pocket Lining Place the remaining Lining, piece E, FACE UP over the entire assemblage in the hoop, making sure you leave ¼ to ½ of fabric around all edges outside of the current stitching lines. This is the lining you will see when you open the zipper and look inside. Tape the edges in place outside the tackdown stitching lines. 9D Return the hoop to the machine. Stitch Color #9. It will go around once with a basting stitch. You can stop the machine if necessary and easily remove this row of stitches if you get a pucker or the fabric shifts. The second round of stitching is a regular length sewing stitch. The third round is a zigzag to finish the bag seam. DO NOT STITCH COLOR #10! I added this color stop to prevent the foot of the machine from returning to center once Color #9 is finished stitching. This will keep the foot from hanging up on any excessive thickness. Don t forget to advance to the beginning of the design if you are doing another bag. 9A Finishing The stitching part is done. Remove the hoop from the machine and the bag from the hoop. One last time, check that the zipper is open halfway. It is too late to fix it after you trim! If you forgot to open it, carefully open the seam, push the zipper pull through to the inside, then stitch the bag shut on your regular sewing machine. Trim away all excess fabric and stabilizer trimming as close you can to the zigzag stitching without cutting thru it. Cut right thru the zipper but don=t use your best shears! 21 You may cut away the stitching at the corners that were for placement stitching, but do not cut into any of the zigzag stitches. 9B Take your time with this step. You may need to trim it away several layers at a time. The narrower your seam allowance, the better your curved seams will look without having to clip them. Steam press the edges to set the seam. Use a pressing cloth if necessary to protect the fabric. 9C Turn the purse over so you can see the back of the zipper. Carefully trim away the stabilizer visible behind the zipper. Cut close to but do not cut into the decorative stitches. Tip: Find the zipper tab and push the point of your scissors or a seam ripper in at that point. It will protect your zipper tape from an accidental slit. Open the zipper the whole way. Tip: If the zipper won t move, reach in and flip the tab upward. The zipper is locked when the tab is pointed down. It sometimes helps to push the zipper closed a bit and then push it open. 9D Turn the bag right side out thru the opening in the zipper. Use a point turner to help turn the bag and push the edges of the seams outward. Turn the bag front to the non-zipper side of the purse. Steam press the bag being very careful not to melt the zipper. Use a pressing cloth to protect the fabric and zippers. Fasten the flap over the pocket. Add optional bow, button or other trim to decorate the flap. Voila! These files are preprogrammed with color changes and pauses to allow placing and trimming the fabric. Your machine needs to be upgraded to version 1.33 or later. When using my PHC files, set your machine (Settings, 2nd screen, left side of page) to show Display Expanded Thread Color - ON, and Original Thread. The Madeira thread colors listed in the chart should show on your machine. Machine should be upgraded to v1.33 or later. Pauses are already programmed. These files are machine ready. Editing them in any software program will cause all pauses and thread color programming to be lost. When merging designs in the machine, the first design retains its stops, following designs lose them. The Pause command on your machine is found on the color editing screen. It is the icon of the hand at the bottom of the screen. Note: when rotating designs in hoop, be sure to remember on which side the zipper tab goes.
