1 ethel tote bag A roomy, sturdy and stylish open tote bag. With a teardrop shape, Ethel veers away from the usual boxy tote. 2 Instructions & Pattern Materials Needed: 1 yard 44 wide exterior fabric 3/4 yard 44 wide lining fabric 1 yard fusible fleece (Pellon Thermolam Plus) 3 yards 20 wide stiff fusible interfacing (Pellon Craft-fuse 808) 1/4 yard fusible stiff stabilizer (Pellon Peltex 71F) 6 all-purpose zipper Coordinating thread Where to stitch 1/2 seam allowance unless noted otherwise 1) PREPPING Cut out all of the pieces of the pattern and tape them together at the matching letters. Trace out all your pieces on the wrong side of the fabric and cut. Repeat with the interfacing and stabilizer pieces. Additionally, measure & cut these pieces: Handles (2 Exterior, 2 Interfacing) 4 x 18 Fuse interfacing to all exterior and lining pieces except for the Zippered Pocket panel. Fuse the stabilizer piece to the exterior Bottom Panel over the interfacing, centered to be 1/2 from all raw edges. Fuse fleece to all exterior pieces over the interfacing, except the Handles, Zippered Pocket and Open Pockets. 2) OPEN POCKETS Place two exterior Pocket Panels right sides together and sew along the top edge of the pocket with a 1/2 seam allowance. Flip right sides out and press to get a nice clean edge at your seam. Edge stitch along the top edge. Pin the Pocket Panel onto the right side of one exterior Main Panel piece, matching up the raw edges. Machine baste around the sides and bottom at 1/4 seam allowance. Repeat all of Step 2 for the lining pocket. right side

3 3) ZIPPERED POCKET Fold the lining Main Panel without pocket in half matching raw edges and press to make a centered vertical crease. Open flat and on the wrong side, measure 8 up from the bottom of one lining Main Panel and mark a 6 horizontal line, extending 3 past the crease on both sides (so it is centered). Mark another 6 line exactly 1/2 above the existing one. Mark two vertical lines connecting the ends to end up with a 6 x 1/2 box. 3 8 Now on the RIGHT side of your Main Panel, pin a short edge of your Zippered Pocket over the rectangle you just drew, right side down (the Main Panel and Zippered Panel will be right sides together). The edges of the Zippered Pocket Panel should go past the rectangle box by about 1/2. Flip over so you are looking at the wrong side of your Main Panel, and sew right along the rectangle you marked. sew along marked rectangle pocket panel underneath right sides together with main panel wrong side

4 Now, inside the stitched rectangle, mark the (black solid) lines shown below (a center line, stopping 1/2 from ends, then to corners), then cut along the lines. Be careful not to clip your stitching in the corners. 1/2 1/2 Pull the Zippered Pocket Panel through the hole you just cut and press well. Pin the 6 zipper on the wrong side, face down and centered over the hole. Topstitch the entire way around the zipper to attach. Fold the loose short edge of the Zippered Pocket Panel up to meet the short edge over the zipper, the right sides should be together. Sew around the 3 open raw edges of the folded Zippered Pocket Panel to enclose and create your pocket, folding your Main Panel out of the way so you don t sew through it. wrong side fold wrong side

5 4) HANDLES Fold a Handle Panel in half matching long edges, wrong sides together and press. Open and fold each long raw edge into the fold mark in the center and press. Fold in half again and press. All long raw edges should be hidden within the Handle now, and the Handle should be about 1 wide. Edge stitch down each long edge of the Handle. Repeat with the remaining Handle piece then set both aside. Right side fold long edges of handle panel to center 5) ASSEMBLE Right sides together, match the raw edges of the exterior Bottom Panel (a short edge) and an exterior Side Panel (the wider straight edge). Sew together at 1/2 seam allowance. Repeat with the remaining exterior Side Panel, attaching it the same way to the other short edge of the Bottom Panel. wrong side Match all edges of both side pieces, wrong sides together and press, folding the bottom in half at the center. This will create a crease so you know where your middle is to line up the exterior main panels. Fold an exterior Main Panel in half, wrong sides together and all raw edges matching and press to make a center crease. Match up the crease marks of one exterior Main Panel and your Bottom Panel, and pin at the center point (your crease) right sides together. Pin at the very tops, then pin in between until your Main Panel is completely pinned to the Sides/Bottom Panels. Starting at your crease in the middle of the Bottom Panel, sew across the bottom and up one side with a 1/2 seam allowance. Go slow around the tighter curves. Start in the center again and sew up the other side to completely attach the Main Panel. Repeat with the other exterior Main Panel, attaching it to the other side of the Sides/Bottom Panels. Trim all seam allowances down to about 1/8. Repeat all of Step 5 with the lining pieces to assemble the lining.

6 6) ATTACH HANDLES Match the raw edge of one end of a Handle with the top raw edge of the exterior, 1 away from the left side seam. Pin in place then machine baste the end of the Handle to the exterior of the bag at 1/4 seam allowance. Repeat to the other end, lining it up with the seam on the right side of the exterior. Make sure the Handle isn t twisted. Repeat to attach second Handle to other side of bag ) FINISH With your lining wrong side out and your exterior right side out, place your exterior INSIDE your lining. Sandwich the slack of the Handles deep down in between the two layers so they are out of the way. Line up the raw top edges at the 4 side seams, and pin every few inches. Starting right before a handle, sew around the top with a 1/2 seam allowance, stopping and backstitching right after the last (4th) Handle. This will leave an opening between the ends of a Handle. Trim your seam allowances except for where the opening is. Pull your bag right side out through the opening, being careful not to rip your stitches. Once right side out, tuck the lining inside the exterior and press around the top edge of the bag, tucking in the seam allowance of the opening you left. Pin it closed, then edge stitch around the entire top edge of the bag. Press the bag to shape it.
