Mylar Moon Boots 1. Design a custom box. Measure the length, width, and height of your foot and add an inch to each of these measurements.» Now draw a rectangle on your cardboard that has the new dimensions of the length and width of your foot.» Draw a rectangle on each side of the first one that you drew and give each of these rectangles a width that equals the height of your foot.» Cut along the perimeter of the shape that you just drew. 2. Construct the box. Bend the four flaps up to create your box.» Use tape to attach the corners of the box together.» On the top of the box, draw a semicircular opening that is large enough for you to put your foot through.» Cut out this semicircle with your craft knife. Supplies Cardboard Mylar blanket Duct tape Craft knife Ruler Pen/Pencil 3. Cut some strips. Using the leftover cardboard, cut out three strips that are 2" wide and long enough to wrap around your calf.» Wrap the strips around your calf and cut off any excess.» Lightly score the strips and bend them into circles. 4. Add the mylar. Lay the three strips horizontally onto a piece of mylar. Space them about an inch apart from each other.» Fold the top edge of the mylar down and tape it to the topmost cardboard strip.» Tape the other two strips to the mylar.» Fold the left and right edges of the mylar over and tape them down.» Make sure each cardboard strip is secured to the mylar.» Do not trim the excess mylar below the strips! You will need at least 5" of excess mylar.

Mylar Moon Boots, continued 5. Roll the mylar. Roll the cardboard into a circular shape again.» Tape the edges together both from the inside and the outside.» For the outside, roll a piece of duct tape inside out lengthwise so that you have a long and narrow piece of tape that is sticky on both sides. Place the roll underneath one of the mylar flaps and secure it to the back of the boot. 6. Finish the box. Place the box that you made in steps 1 & 2 on top of another sheet of mylar, with the topside down.» Wrap the box on all sides except for the bottom.» Use the craft knife to cut out the mylar that is stretched across the opening that you made for your foot. 7. Finish your boot. Place the top half of your boot over the opening that you cut for your foot and pull the excess mylar into the box through the bottom.» Now try on your new boot! If you made your box large enough, you can also wear regular shoes underneath your boot.» Repeat this tutorial to make the second shoe so that you can rock a shiny pair of moon boots! 8. Make bonus wrist cuffs! If you have leftover cardboard and mylar, use the same techniques that you used in steps 3-5 to make mylar wrist cuffs to match your moon boots. Simply measure the cardboard strips to fit around your wrists instead of your calves. What else can you design with the mylar? Try designing more accessories or articles of clothing!

Carton Coin Keeper 1. Prepare the carton. Rinse your empty carton out.» Carefully open the carton from the top. Be sure not to crease the section that has the cap on it.» Use paper towels to dry the inside of your carton. Supplies Template Empty milk or juice carton with round plastic cap Craft knife 2. Flatten the carton. Use your craft knife to cut the back and bottom of the carton off. You will only need the front and sides of it.» Trace the template onto the back of the flattened carton. Line the solid circle up with the cap.» Now cut out the shape that you traced. Pen or pencil 3. Make some folds. Your coin keeper will use the folds that were already part of the carton design.» Add a few more folds so that you get the accordion seen in the photo on the left. 4. Finish your coin keeper! Using the craft knife, cut out the hole for the cap according to the template.» Unscrew the cap and fold the top of your coin keeper down so that the hole fits over the threaded piece that the cap screws onto.» Screw the cap back on to complete your coin keeper!

» Cut along the solid lines» Fold along the dotted lines

Light-Up Origami Hat Supplies Large piece of square paper Copper tape 1. Fold your paper in half diagonally both ways. 2. You should now have an X-shaped crease in your paper. LEDs Coin cell battery 3. Now fold your paper in half both ways again, but this time not diagonally. 4. Your paper should now be folded into eighths. Repeat steps 1-3, but fold your paper in the opposite direction so that all of the creases go both ways. 5. Fold the top edge of your paper down to the bottom. There should be two diagonal lines on the top half of the folded paper. Fold the right diagonal line back up so that the bottom middle point of the top half now touches the upper right corner. 6. Now fold the bottom left corner over so that it is on top of the bottom right corner.

Light-Up Origami Hat, cont. 7. Now fold the middle point along the right edge of your paper to the bottom left corner. Your origami should flatten out after this fold. 8. Press everything down and smooth all folds. 9. Orient your paper so that the crease in the middle is vertical. Fold the left and right corners to the crease. 10. Flip your paper over and repeat step nine. Your origami should now resemble a diamond. 11. Lift one of the corners that you folded and stick your hand into the cone. Now flatten the cone out. 12. Repeat step eleven on all four corners that you folded in steps Fold your paper in half so that that the two flattened cones are now pressed together. Flip your paper over and repeat this on the other side. 14. Now bend each corner on both sides backwards along the exisiting diagonal creases. 15. If you did all of the folds in step fourteen correctly, your hat should now look like a diamond again. Maker Camp 2015»» Week Four Six» Far-Out Fun and Future Games

Light-Up Origami Hat, cont. 16. Fold the top half of the diamond down, then unfold it. Flip it over and repeat this step on the other side. Be sure to unfold it once more. 17. Now fold the tip of the diamond shape up on all four sides of your hat. 18. Open up your futuristic origami hat and try it on! 19. To add LEDs to your hat, pick three of the same color and line them up side by side with their positive legs on the same side. The positive legs are the longer ones. 20. Cut two pieces of copper tape that are long enough to span across your three LEDs. Tape one across the negative legs and the other across the positive legs. 21. Fold a piece of copper tape so that it's inside out and sticky on all sides. Use this to tape the positive side of the coincell battery onto the strip of copper tape that runs along the positive legs of the LEDs. 22. Add a piece of copper tape to the negative side of the battery and connect it to the strip of copper tape that runs along the negative legs of the LEDs. 23. Your simple circuit is now complete! Use this method along with more batteries and LEDs to decorate your new hat. What designs will you come up with? Maker Camp 2015»» Week Four Six» Far-Out Fun and Future Games

Rainbow Spectroscope #1 1. Cut the cardstock. Cut two squares of cardstock that are large enough to cover the ends of the cardboard tube with space left over.» If you do not have a cardboard tube, then use additional cardstock to make a tube! 2. Add the film. Use the hole punch to punch a hole in the center of one of the squares of cardstock. You might have to fold the edge of the square to get the hole punch over the center.» Now tape a small piece of spectroscopic film over the hole that you punched. Do not get any tape over the hole! Supplies Spectroscope film (kit) Cardboard tube Cardstock or construction paper Tape Scissors Thumbtack Hole punch 3. Attach the cardstock. Place the cardstock with the spectroscopic film over one end of the cardboard tube.» Cut the cardstock into a circular shape and then cut slits towards the center all the way around the cardstock. Be careful not to cut too far! Only cut up to the tube-- do not make any cuts where the cardstock stretches over the opening.» Fold down the flaps that you made and tape the cardstock to the tube by wrapping tape around the flaps. 4. Option A spectroscope. Attach the other piece of cardstock to the other end of the tube using the same process that you used in step 3.» Use the thumbtack to poke a pattern into the cardstock. Be creative with your pattern!

Rainbow Spectroscope #1, cont. 5. Option B spectroscope. Cut the remaining piece of cardstock in half and center the two pieces over the end of the cardboard tube. Leave a couple millimeters of space between the halves.» Before you tape the pieces down, look through the hole that you punched on the other end and turn the tube until the rainbows run parallel to the slit.» After it is calibrated, tape the pieces down using the same method from step Look for rainbows! Look through the hole that you punched to see some rainbows! Try looking at different types of light such as fluorescent, incandescent, candlelight, daylight. etc. Remember, do NOT look directly at the sun! Maker Camp 2015»» Week Four Six» Far-Out Fun and Future Games

Rainbow Spectroscope #2 1. Prepare the template. In this tutorial, you will use the template on the next page to create your spectroscope.» Start by gluing the template to an opaque piece of paper (opaque means that you cannot see through it).» Next, cut the template out according to its instructions. You will need the craft knife to cut out the two windows. 2. Build the spectroscope. Follow the instructions on the template to construct the spectroscope.» After it is completed, cut two flaps on the bottom underneath the eye window and open them (see picture on the left). Supplies Spectroscope template CD or DVD Cardstock, construction paper, or other opaque paper Glue stick Tape Scissors Craft knife Safety goggles 3. Option A. Take your CD or DVD and tape it shinyside-up to the bottom of your spectroscope. The shiny side of the CD should completely cover the opening that you cut in step 2.» Use the sides of the CD as handles and try out your new spectroscope! Look through the eye window directly down onto the CD while aiming the other window at a source of light. Do not aim it directly at the sun! 4. Option B. Put the safety goggles on and cut the CD or DVD into sixths.» Tape the piece of CD shiny-side-up over the opening that you cut in step 2. Make sure the opening is completely covered.» Test out your new spectroscope by looking down through the eye window at the CD while aiming the other window at a source of light. Do not aim it directly at the sun!
