Please give Marshall Stearns your newsletter input at (937) or October Meeting: The Annual Pot Luck Dinner with Bingo On October 24 th you can socialize with your fellow carvers and enjoy the wealth of a pot luck dinner. Now that the ornaments contest has to precede the pot luck dinner we have a different kind of fun: BINGO with prizes! We start early, at 6:30. We meet in the cafeteria up the hall. Bring your best pot luck dish and utensils for serving it. Bring your own plate, napkin, cup, flatware and drink. What you use is only what you brought. Who we are. What we do. We, The Dayton Carvers Guild, are wood carving enthusiasts. Some are experts and some are beginners. All are welcome. Carvers and folks that might be interested in carving are invited to come to our meetings. At a typical meeting, we start with Show and Tell. Bring your carving, finished or just started. One of those showing something wins something like a knife or glue from a grab box. We break for coffee and cookies, and then have a program. It might be a how to demonstration or a presentation of something related to wood or carving. Artistry in Wood is a big two-day show exhibiting carving and woodworking art, selling them, selling tools and wood, plus a competition. We put on this show. Volunteers get in free for that day and that applies to DCG members. Non-member volunteers are also welcomed. September Show & Tell Winner Jim Reboulet had the winning ticket and he chose a long-bladed carving knife. Judy York recently died because of cancer. Judy was a loved friend and contributor to the carving community. She was President of The Dayton Carvers Guild in Does anyone know a carver, Will Kahlbert? He lived in Ohio. Some folks in North Carolina are trying to find him. Contact Marshall if you do. September 50/50 Winner It was Al Wurstner. He always wins. Almost. 3 Ornaments Contest Winners At the September meeting we had two tables loaded with ornaments which will be raffled at Artistry in Wood. The members pondered really hard and voted. The skill level is beginner. Carvers will use palm gouges and a small carving knife. Class will run from 9am till 5pm. Cost is $75. To get more details and register call Woodcraft at (937) The carvers like to come to Marion s for the foot, sack and wheelbarrow races, topped by a greased pig catch. We carvers, friends and grandchildren enjoy a once-a-month lunch at Marion s Piazza. It s every first Wednesday of the month and we start around noon. Our Marion s is the one at 3443 North Dixie Drive in Dayton. Join us if you can. The September program was, just for the record, a Lynn Doughty video on wood burning and flapper sanding that he does prior to painting a carving. Congratulations to us all. 3

4 Dayton Carvers at Iowa From the list below you will see that we did incredibly well at the big Iowa show. As you know, the Belchers will haul and enter your carvings there. They took forty two this year. Do some fine carving, get it to Iowa next year and win some ribbons. Barb Belcher collects this information for us. It s no small task.
