This is the time for St. Patrick s Day, shamrocks, and corned beef and cabbage. This is also the time of new growth all afield, as well as for our club. Speaking of new growth, John, Kurt, and Rose have introduced 3 more beginner carvers to our Tuesday carving. All of these folks are excited about our beginning carving projects and we hope to have them as new members soon. I have several items to mention to you this early spring: RAFFLE PRIZES FOR THIS YEAR S SHOW: At our last meeting and in our newsletter, we discussed getting started on this year s show raffle prizes. We will again limit our raffle prizes to 5 items, as we did last year. These items can be from any of the following categories: WOOD CARVINGS, BURNINGS, TURNINGS, TOOLS, or GIFTBASKETS/GIFT CERTIFICATES. Several members have already volunteered items for the show. All items will be welcome; we are hoping to receive these items as soon as possible, so that we will have photos/descriptions for our brochures in order to begin selling and/or presenting raffle tickets at all our upcoming events, such as the Alameda County Fair, Art under the Oaks, and any other events or demos. The success of this process will depend on selling tickets early on in the year, before, as well as during, our show in September. Please contact Bill Bender with your donation, as soon as possible. Announcements: Our library at the shop has a new look thanks to Gary Eaves!! Gary has taken all of our patterns and pictures and arranged them into separate binders by subject. It will make it a lot quicker to find subject matter for your project research or patterns. We need to make sure if you find a pattern to copy, Please do so and return the pattern or picture back to the file. KUDOS and a big THANK YOU To Gary!! Second Saturday classes: Continuing this year, we will be selecting several months to be set aside for carving classes at our Saturday meetings at the Senior Center. 2 March 2019 TVC Newsletter ( Page 2 From the Pres (continued) carving session continuing with John Peterson s boot and various turning projects with Paul Fackler. You need to let them know if you are starting a boot or finishing the last one, so John will have cutouts for you. Paul has several small projects for learning turning on a Lathe. Contact Paul for the session. I will be teaching another class on Carving an Animated Toy Soldier. Ken will have a class on tool sharpening and you will be able to use the Club s sharpening tool. Bring in your dull tools for a spruce up. The topics/projects are selected by preference from the members and are taught by members with expertise in the subject. As the Saturday, typical time available is 3 hours, we must start at 9am and carve until 12pm to have as much time as we can get for projects. We may be able to go until 1pm, if the Center remains open. The club will provide the materials for the projects free. Just bring your own tools. The classes this March and April, are listed in the Bulletin section of the newsletter. In order to fully utilize the time for our teachers, members must let us know their preference for the classes. If you want to attend several of the classes available, we will do the class again according to demand. Come and enjoy a great carving experience and perhaps learn a few tricks from our Teachers! 3 March 2019 TVC Newsletter ( Page 3 Bulletin Board by Paul Fackler [:] Saturday Carving Classes: Last week's carving classes were a huge success. The room was packed!! We had 3 folks turning trees and experimenting with some new techniques. John had 8 people starting his boot project. Everyone was totally engaged in their carvings and had a great time, as you can see from the pictures. I'm sure they are anxious to start Round Two. We will continue the boot project and Paul will do birch natural edged tea light holders for the turners (three lathes available) at the next Saturday carving session Mar. 9, 9:00-12:00; plus Bob will introduce the Drummer Soldier and we've asked Ken to give a sharpening workshop. So, there is lots to do. [:] TVC Takes a Trip to Tesla: We had, roughly, an hour tour on a tram that showed us how the Model S/X/3 were made--from pressed aluminum to finished paint job. The technology and precision needed to have the robots synced with each other was awesome. There was so much to look at as the tram moved along at 3mph it was almost impossible to assimilate it all.
