Noise emission Notes concerning noise emission: Given that there exists a relationship between noise level and exposure times, it is not precise enough to determine the need for supplementary precautions. The factors affecting the true level of exposure to operators are clearly the amount of time exposed; the characteristics of the working environment, such as other sources of dust and noise, etc. For example, adjacent machines may impact the level of ambient noise. It is also possible that exposure level limits will vary from country to country. All damage must be noted on the delivery documents and signed by you and the delivery driver. You must then contact the seller (Laguna Tools, Inc.) as soon as is practical. If damage is found after delivery, contact the seller as soon as is practical. Note: It is probable that you will find sawdust within your machine. This is because the machine has been tested prior to shipment from the factory and or Laguna Tools, Inc. 6

Laguna Tools, Inc. endeavors to test machines prior to shipping to customers as movement can take place during transportation. It must be noted that additional machine movement can take place between Laguna Tools and delivery to the end user, and some adjustments may have to be undertaken by the customer. These adjustments are covered in the appropriate sections of this manual. Introduction to lathes This machine is designed to give you years of safe service. Read this owner's manual in its entirety before assembly or use. Parts of the lathe The lathe consists of a number of major parts, which are discussed in this manual. Take the time to read this section and become familiar with the machine. Identification There is a plate at the back of the machine listing all the manufacturing data, including the serial number, model, etc. Lathe bed The bed is a machined heavy casting. Head stock The head stock is cast iron and houses the pulleys and lathe spindle. Head stock Tail stock Tail stock The tail stock is of Tool rest Lather bed cast iron construction, and the spindle has a travel of 2.1/4". It can accommodate centers and other tools that have a No. 2 Morse taper. The tail stock can be moved to any position on the lathe bed and locked to suit the job at hand. 9 Where to locate your machine Before you remove your machine from the packaging, select the area where you will use your machine. There are no hard-and-fast rules for its location, but below are a few guidelines: 1. There should be an area at the front of the machine suitable for comfortable working. 2. There should be sufficient area at the back of the machine to allow access for adjustments and maintenance to be conducted. 3. Adequate lighting. The better the lighting, the more accurately and safely you will be able to work. 4. Solid workbench or similar. 5. Locate it close to a power source and dust collection point. 6. Allow an area for the storage of blanks, finished products and tools. Unpacking your machine To unpack your machine, you will need tin snips and a knife. 1. Using the tin snips, cut the banding that is securing the packing box (If fitted) to the pallet. WARNING: EXTREME CAUTION MUST BE USED, AS THE BANDING WILL SPRING AND COULD CAUSE INJURY. Packaged lathe 2. Open the box and remove the parts that are supplied with the lathe. 3. Remove the upper packaging. 4. Lift out the lathe and place it on the workbench. Note: The lathe is heavy, and you will need two people to lift it out of the packaging. Note: If you have any doubt about the described procedure, seek professional assistance. Do not attempt any procedure that you feel is unsafe or that you may not have the physical capability of achieving. 9

Assembly and setup The machine comes mostly assembled. You will have to assemble the optional back tool rest holder onto the bed of the machine. Clamping Screws Back tool rest holder Tool rest moved from the bed of the lathe to the back tool rest holder 1. Fit the back tool rest holder to the rear of the lathe with the three ratchet clamping screws. 2. Remove the tool rest holder from the bed of the lathe by removing the clamping nut on the underside of the bed of the lathe. 3. Replace the nut onto the thread and slide onto the tool rest holder. 4. Adjust the nut until the clamping handle locks the tool rest holder. Connecting the electrical supply Ensure that the electrical supply corresponds with that of the machine (single phase 110V). It is recommended that you use a 15-amp main breaker. View under the bed of the lathe showing the tool rest clamping nut Cleaning the machine Remove the rust protection grease with WD 40 or a similar solvent. It is important that you remove all the grease and re-lubricate with a Teflon-based lubricant. Teflon has less tendency to attract sawdust and cause clogging. 10

Fitting the tail stock rotating center Ensure that the bore of the tail stock is clean. The rotating center has a No. 2 Morse taper that fits into the tail stock. Push the center into the tail stock bore firmly and ensure that it is securely located. To remove the center, push the knock Rotating center out shaft into the back of the tail stock and give it a sharp knock. This will remove the rotating center. Note: Do not leave the knock-out shaft in the tail stock with the machine running. Fitting the drive center in the head stock Knock-out rod Knock-out rod Drive center Ensure that the bore of the head stock is clean. The drive center has a No. 2 Morse taper that fits into the head stock. Push the center into the head stock bore firmly and ensure that it is securely located. To remove the center, push the knock-out shaft into the back of the head stock and then give it a sharp knock. This will remove the drive center. Note: Do not leave the knock out shaft in the head stock with the machine running. 11

Fitting and removing the face plate The face plate has flats for a wrench. To remove the face plate from the head stock spindle, insert the knock out rod or a shaft of the same diameter into the hole on the side of the lathe spindle and loosen the face plate with a wrench. To fit a face plate reverse the removal procedure, as described earlier. Wrench flats Face plate Variable speed control The speed of the spindle is adjustable between 410 rpm and 3700 rpm. The lathe is provided with a three pulley system to optimize the torque. Always select suitable pulleys for the type of work being undertaken. Changing pulleys is covered later in the manual. Knock-out rod Speed display On-off switch The on-off switch activates or deactivates the motor. The switch is provided with a safety pullout. With the yellow pull out removed, the switch is deactivated. On/Off switch Speed-control knob Speed display Safety pullout Speed-control knob 12

Tail stock The tail stock can be moved to any position on the bed of the lathe. To move the tail stock, unlock the locking handle, slide the tail stock to the required position and lock. The tail stock spindle can be extended and retracted by rotating the handle located at the back of the tail stock. The spindle can be locked in position with the screw on the side of the tail stock. Always lock the spindle when operating the lathe. Spindle lock Changing pulleys Pulley clamp handle Locking handle Cover transport locking screw Pulley adjustment handle Pulleys Pulleys viewed from the Pulley speed range underside of lathe The pulleys are accessed from the back of the lathe. There is a hinged door. The door has a transport screw that keeps the door closed during transport. To open the door, remove the screw and store in a safe place in case you need to transport the lathe. To select a different set of pulleys proceed as follows. 13

1. Disconnect the power to the lathe. 2. Loosen the pulley clamp handle. 3. Move the pulley adjustment handle vertically as far as it can go and lock the pulley clamp handle. 4. Move the drive belt to the required set of pulleys. To access the lower pulleys the electrical control box has to be hinged away. The box is held in place with a spring clip. Once the pulley selection has been completed, the control box must be clipped back in position. Never run the late with the control box not clipped in position, as the pulleys are dangerously exposed. 5. Loosen the pulley clamp handle. Move the pulley adjustment handle down to apply tension onto the drive belt and Electrical control box Access to lower pulleys tighten the pulley clamp handle. The drive belt should be tensioned similar to a car fan belt. Pressing on the side of the drive belt with moderate pressure, there should be approximately 1/8" deflection. 6. Reconnect the power to the lathe. Removing the rear face plate / spindle handle Rear face plate Allen key Knock out rod The rear face plate can be removed and another face plate (not supplied) fitted as follows. 1. Disconnect the power to the lathe. 2. Loosen and remove the clamp screw with the Allen key. 14

3. Fit the knock-out rod into the spindle to control the rotation of the spindle and rotate the face plate until it is removed. 4. To fit the new face plate, reverse the procedure. Maintenance General Keep your machine clean. At the end of each day, clean the machine. Wood contains moisture, and if sawdust or wood chips are not removed, they will cause rust. In general, we recommend that you only use a Teflon-based lubricant on the lathe. Regular oil attracts dust and dirt. Teflon lubricant tends to dry and has fewer tendencies to accumulate dirt and sawdust. Periodically check that all nuts and bolts are tight. Drive belt The drive belt should last for many years (depending on the usage) but needs to be inspected regularly for cracks, cuts and general wear. If damage is found, replace the belt. Bearings All bearings are sealed for life and do not require any maintenance. If a bearing becomes faulty, replace it. Rust The lathe is made from steel and cast iron. All nonpainted surfaces will rust if not protected. It is recommended that they are protected by applying wax or a Teflon-based lubricant Troubleshooting Lathe will not start 1. Check that the start switch is in the correct position. 2. Check that the electrical power cord is plugged into the power outlet. 3. Check that the electrical supply is on (reset the breaker). 4. With the power disconnected from the machine, check that the wiring to the plug is correct. Check that the rubber insulation is stripped enough and is not causing a bad connection. Check that all the screws are tight. Electrical reset 5. The lathe has a built-in trip system that is designed to protect the lathe from overloading the electrical system. Should the trip system cut the power to the machine, the reset button has to be reset. 15

The machine will not stop This is a very rare occurrence, as the machine is designed to fail-safe. If it should occur and you cannot fix the fault, seek professional assistance. The machine must be disconnected from the power and never run until the fault has been rectified. 1. Stop switch faulty. Replace the stop switch. Motor tries to start but will not turn 1. With the power disconnected from the machine, try to turn the spindle by hand. If the spindle will not turn, check the reason for the jamming. 2. Capacitor faulty. Replace the capacitor. 3. Motor faulty. Replace the motor. Motor overheats The motor is designed to run hot, but should it overheat, it has an internal thermal overload protector that will shut it down until the motor has cooled, and then it will reset automatically. If the motor overheats, wait until it has cooled and restart. If the motor shuts down consistently, check for the reason. Typical reasons are dull cutting tools, over-feeding the job and excessive ambient temperature. Squeaking noise 1. Check the bearings. 2. Check the drive belt. Spindle slows down during a cut 1. Dull cutting tools. Replace the tool or have it resharpened. 2. Feeding the wood too fast. Slow down the feed rate. 3. Oil or dirt on the drive belt. Clean or replace the drive belt. Machine vibrates 1. Machine not level on the bench. Re-level the machine, ensuring that it has no movement. 2. Damaged drive belt. Replace the belt. 3. Job is not balanced. Change to slower speed and/or balance the job. 4. Damaged pulley. Replace the pulley. 16
