Introduction to CNC Bat Master Lathe The Bat Master is designed to give you years of safe service. Read this owner s manual in its entirety before assembly or use. The advantage of the CNC machine is that it can, in most cases, fully machine the complete job without it being removed from the Lathe so that you have finished parts of high accuracy that are totally repeatable. Parts of the CNC Machine Gantry Cutter guard Cutter motor Head stock Bed Tail stock Frame 7

Stops Gantry Stop switch Noise Emission Electrical cabinet Caterpillar track The head stock is cast iron and houses the variable speed control and motor. The speed can be adjusted between (low) (high). Tail Stock The tail stock is a cast iron construction, and the spindle has a travel of 4 ¼ in. It can accommodate centers and other tools which have a number 2 Morse taper. The tail stock can be moved to any position on the lathe bed and locked to suit the job in hand. Bed The bed of the machine consists of a heavy cast steel frame that supports the tail and head stock. Both the tail and head stock can be clamped in any position to suit the job in hand. Gantry The gantry runs along the back of the lathe and supports the linear bearing rods. The cutter head moves along the rods on linear bearings. It is moved along the length of the gantry rack and pinion that is controlled by the machine controller. Frame The frame is a heavy welded construction that supports all the other parts of the machine Cutter Head The cutter head is moved vertically by a precision ball screw system that is controlled by the machine controller. The cutter blade is moved horizontally by a rack and pinion system that is controlled by the computer and allows various profiles to be machined. 8

Cutter Guard The machine is provided with a cutter guard that also acts as a dust collection hood. Cutter Motor The machine is supplied with a 3.6 hp 1phase cutter motor. The motor is mounted on the gantry and is moved vertically by a precision ball screw system that is controlled by the computer and enables various profiles to be machined. Electrical Cabinet The electrical cabinet is located at the back of the machine and houses the electrical components of the machine. Caterpillar Track The caterpillar track runs at the back of the lathe and contains all the electrical cables Stops There are two stops on the top rail that limits the travel of the gantry. Limit Switches There are limit switches that are activated by either a metal flag or the metal cover of the gantry. Hand-held Controller The hand-held controller controls all functions of the lathe. See separate manual for the operation of the hand-held controller. Additional Instructions for the Use of the CNC Like all machines, there is danger associated with the machine. Injury is frequently caused by lack of knowledge or familiarity. Use this machine with respect. If normal safety precautions are overlooked or ignored, serious personal injury may occur. As the CNC lathe is under the control of the onboard machine controller, it is important that you are clear of the cutter when operating the machine. Where to Locate Your Machine Before you unpack your machine, select the area where you will use your machine. There are no hard-and-fast rules for its location, but below are a few guidelines. 1. There should be an area around the machine suitable for the length of wood that you will be machining. 2. Adequate lighting. The better the lighting, the more accurate and safely you will be able to work. 3. Solid floor. You should select a solid, flat floor, preferably concrete or something similar. 4. Close to power source and dust collection. 9

Unpack the Machine To unpack your machine, you will need tin snips, knife and a wrench. 1. Using the tin snips, cut the banding that is securing the machine to the Pallet (if fitted). WARNING: EXTREME CAUTION MUST BE USED BECAUSE THE BANDING WILL SPRING AND COULD CAUSE INJURY. 2. Remove the box from the CNC machine (if fitted) and any other packaging material. The parts ordered with the machine will be packed on or inside the machine. Note. The machine is heavy, and if you have any doubt about the described procedure, seek professional assistance. Do not attempt any procedure that you feel is unsafe or that you do not have the physical capability of achieving. 3. Use a forklift with sufficient lifting capacity and forks that are long enough to reach the complete width of the machine. 4. Remove the securing bolts that attach the machine to the pallet (if fitted). 5. Approaching the machine from the front, lift the machine on the frame, taking care that there are no cables or pipes in the area of the forks. 6. Move the machine to the required position and lower gently to the floor. 7. Level the machine so that lathe is not rocking and the machine is level in both directions using a spirit level. Assembly and Operation Assembling the Hand-held Controller Note: See separate manual for the operation of the hand held controller. Note: Never use a memory stick with a greater capacity than 8GB. If you do, it will crash your machine s computer. It is Connection cable strongly suggested that you purchase additional memory sticks and mark them CNC machine use only. Fit the cable to the controller and ensure that the screws are finger tight. The USB printer cable port is used to connect the controller directly into your computer. Hand-held controller Note: The connection port socket and plug only fit one way, so ensure that the plug is the correct way up prior to assembling. Memory stick socket 10

Electrical Connections for the Machine The main power cable has no plug fitted, as it will be dependent on your installation. Ensure that when installing the electrical supply to the machine 220v single phase is supplied. It is recommended that you use a 30-amp breaker. Note: When wiring the machine to your electrical system, keep your cable as short as possible and the cable should not be allowed to run along the floor, as this will cause a trip hazard. Note: A qualified electrician must carry out the electrical installation. Fitting the Drive Center in the Head Stock Ensure that the bore of the head stock is clean. The drive center has a No 2 Morse taper that fits into the head stock. Push the center into the head stock bore firmly, and ensure that it is securely located. To remove the center, push the removal shaft into the back of the head stock and give it a sharp knock. This will remove the drive center. Note: Do not leave the removal shaft in the head stock with the machine running. Main power cable Spare cable gland Drive centre Head Stock Head Stock Clamp Lever The head stock clamp lever allows the head stock to be released and moved to any position on the lathe bed. The lever is located at the back of the head stock. It is recommended that the end of the head stock is in line with the end of the bed, as this will allow the maximum amount of lathe bed to be used for machining. Head stock clamp leaver 11

Spindle Speed Control The lathe has two sets of pulleys, high and low range. Motor clamp handle Motor lift handle Motor drive belt adjustment High low pulleys Changing the High/Low Range Speed control pulleys located behind drop-down panel 1. Disconnect the power from the machine. 2. Release the motor clamp handle. 3. Lift the motor lever vertically to remove the tension from the drive belts. 4. Move the belts to the other set of pulleys. 5. Push down on the motor lever until the correct tension is applied to the belt, approximately 1/8 to ¼ in deflection when pressed with moderate pressure. 6. Re-clamp the motor. Electrical Controls Power On-Off Switch The on/off switch activates or de-activates the electrical system, including the motor. Spindle Direction Switch Spindle direction switch Speed display The spindle direction switch has three positions: Forward, stop, reverse. When changing spindle direction, it is very important that the switch is left in the stop (0) position until the spindle has come to a complete stop. Power On/Off switch Speed control If the switch is moved from forward to reverse while the spindle is rotating, the electrical system will be strained and failure will occur. 12

Speed Control Knob The speed control knob is used to control the speed of the spindle. Note: Max torque is a setting of 50% or greater; lower than 25% will stress the electrical components and eventually cause failure. Starting the Lathe It is very important that the following procedure is followed when starting and stopping the lathe. If the procedure is not followed, then the electrical system will be strained and failure will occur. 1. Select the speed range and move the drive belt to the correct set of pulleys as detailed earlier in the manual. 2. The (Forward [R], Off [O], Reverse [L]) switch must be in the OFF [O] position. 3. Lift the cover of the (Start/Stop) button and press the green start button to start the VFD (variable frequency converter). 4. Allow the drive to power up for 30 seconds. 5. Now start the lathe in either forward or reverse with the forward [R], off [O], reverse [L] switch. 6. Adjust the Speed control switch to desired speed. Note: Max torque is a setting of 50% or greater; lower than 25% will stress the electrical components and eventually cause failure. 7. To STOP your lathe, ONLY use the forward [R], off [O], reverse [L] switch. Never use the speed controller to stop the lathe. DO NOT use the speed controller to zero for stopping, as this will strain the electrical system and cause electrical failure. Do NOT use the ON/OFF switch for stopping, as this will strain the electrical system and cause electrical failure. Changing the Spindle Direction 1. Reduce the spindle speed to zero with the spindle forward [R], off [O], reverse [L] switch in the off [O] position. 2. Only once the spindle has stopped, turn the direction switch to the required direction. 3. Turn the speed control knob until the required speed is displayed on the readout. Note: If the spindle direction is changed while the spindle is rotating, damage to the motor or the speed control electronics may result. The red stop switch should only be pressed and power removed from the VFD (variable frequency converter) when you have completed your work. 13

Tailstock Rotating centre Quill Adjusting handle Quill lock Tailstock clamp The tailstock can be moved to any position on the bed of the lathe. To move the tailstock, unlock the tailstock clamp, slide the tailstock to the required position and lock. The tailstock spindle can be extended and retracted by rotating the handle located at the back of the tailstock. The spindle can be locked in position with the screw on the side of the tailstock. Always lock the spindle when operating the lathe. Fitting the Drive Center in the Tailstock Ensure that the bore of the tailstock is clean. The drive center has a No 2 Morse taper that fits into the tailstock. Push the center into the tailstock bore firmly and ensure that it is securely located. To remove the center, rotate the quill adjusting handle counter-clockwise until it comes to a stop. Give the handle an additional half turn, and the drive center will be ejected. 14

Fitting a Blade To tighten the blade onto the spindle, lock the spindle with an allen wrench and rotate the nut counter-clockwise. The blade should have a bore of 1". The standard blade that is supplied with the machine has a slight tooth radius. This tooth radius can be customized to suit your application. The blade that is supplied with the machine is 10" diameter x 24 teeth but the number of teeth can be varied to suit your application. To tighten the blade onto the spindle, rotate the nut counter- clockwise Loading Your Software If you purchase Vectric software, contact Laguna Tools customer service for the post processor that should be used for this machine. If you use a different supplier of software, contact your supplier for the post processor to be used. General Maintenance Keep your machine clean. At the end of each day, clean the machine. Wood contains moisture, and if sawdust or wood chips are not removed, they will cause rust. In general, we recommend that you only use a Teflon-based lubricant on the lathe. Regular oil attracts dust and dirt. Teflon lubricant tends to dry and has less tendency to accumulate dirt and sawdust. Periodically check that all nuts and bolts are tight. Drive Belt The drive belt should last for many years (depending on the usage) but needs to be inspected regularly for cracks, cuts and general wear. If damage is found, replace the belt. Bearings All bearings are sealed for life and do not require any maintenance. If a bearing becomes faulty, replace it. Rust The lathe is made from steel and cast iron. All nonpainted surfaces will rust if not protected. It is recommended that they are protected by applying wax or a 30-wt oil. 16

Weekly Checks 1. Clean the cutters. 2. Check cutter teeth for chips and dullness. 3. Generally inspect the machine for damage and loose or worn parts. 4. Check the dust extraction for blockages, as any large bits could cause blockages. 5. Check that all the electrical connectors are fitted correctly and are not loose. 6. Check that all the motor couplers are connected and that the screws are tight. Activation flag Position of Stop Switches The stop switches are activated by proximity to steel items and can be tested by placing a screwdriver or something similar on the activation face (top). When activated, a LED should light. If the LED does not come on, the switch or wiring is faulty. X axis is activated by the vertical axis cover Y axis is activated by a steel flag. "Z axis" proximity switch "X axis" proximity switch Universal Joints The ball screws are coupled to the motor shafts with a universal joint. The joints should be checked periodically to check that they are tight and not damaged. If loose, tighten the clamping screws. If damaged, replace. Z axis universal joint 17

Fuses Note: Never access the inside of the electrical box with the mains connected. The electrical functions of the machine are protected by fuses. To access the fuse pull, the fuse holder up. Once the fuse has been checked that it has not blown, ensure that the fuse holder is pushed down and is fully home. Fuse Fuse holder open Troubleshooting Fuse holder block The lathe or CNC function will not start. 1. Check that the rotation switch is not in the 0 position. 2. Check that the electrical power cord is plugged into the power outlet. 3. Check that the electrical supply is on (reset the breaker). 4. With the power disconnected from the machine, check the wiring to the plug is correct. Check that the rubber insulation is stripped enough and is not causing a bad connection. Check that all the screws are tight. 5. Check that the red emergency stop switch is fully out. The machine will not stop. This is a very rare occurrence, as the machine is designed to fail-safe. If it should occur and you cannot fix the fault, seek professional assistance. The machine must be disconnected from the power and never run until the fault has been rectified. 1. Stop switch faulty. Replace the stop switch. 2. Forward, off, reverse switch faulty. Replace the switch. 3. Internal breaker faulty. Replace the breaker. Motor tries to start but will not turn. 1. With the power disconnected from the machine. Try to turn the spindle by hand. If the spindle will not turn, check the reason for the jamming. 2. Capacitor faulty. Replace the capacitor. 3. Motor faulty. Replace the motor. 19

Motor Overheats The motor is designed to run hot, but should it overheat, it has an internal thermal overload protector that will shut it down until the motor has cooled, and then it will reset automatically. If the motor overheats, wait until it has cooled and restart. If the motor shuts down consistently, check for the reason. Typical reasons are dull cutting tools, motor-cooling fan clogged or faulty, motor-cooling fins clogged, overfeeding the job, and excessive ambient temperature. Squeaking Noise 1. Check the bearings. 2. Check the drive belt. Spindle Slows Down During a Cut 1. Dull cutting tools. Replace the tool or have it re-sharpened. 2. Feeding the wood too fast. Slow down the feed rate. 3. Oil or dirt on the drive belt. Clean or replace the drive belt. Machine Vibrates 1. Machine not level on the floor. Re-level the machine, ensuring that it has no movement. 2. Damaged drive belt. Replace the belt. 3. Job is not balanced. Change to slower speed and/or balance the job 4. Damaged pulley. Replace the pulley. The Hand-held Controller Screen is Blank or Dull or Flickers 1. Check that the cable to the hand-held controller is fitted correctly and the clamping screws are tight. 2. Check that the connectors on the Interface printed circuit board are fitted correctly and that all the screws are tight. 3. Check if a fuse has blown. 4. The 50 pin interface is damaged. Replace the damaged part. 5. The power supply is damaged. Replace the power supply. 6. The hand-held controller is damaged. Replace the hand-held controller. 7.
