4 LatheDuplictr(1/12) 10/30/06 8:20 AM Page 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS Warranty and Service Warnings Table of Contents Unpacking Cleaning Fitting duplicator to other lathes Introduction Basic Components Assembly Attach mounting brackets to the lathe bed Attach duplicator to the mounting brackets Attach handwheel and check the carriage Attach the duplicator to the lathe Operation Attach a template or sample to the duplicator Making a duplicate turning Schematic Drawing Parts List Unpacking The Lathe Duplicator comes completely assembled in the carton. It only requires attaching the Hand Wheel and mounting the Lathe Duplicator to the lathe bed. Carefully unpack the duplicator from the carton. Check for shipping damage and ensure that all the components listed on page 5, Basic Components, are enclosed. If any damage occurred or parts are missing, please contact your dealer immediately for replacement. Cleaning Clean all protective oil from the surfaces of the duplicator with a mild solvent or kerosene. DO NOT use lacquer thinner, paint thinner or gasoline as this could damage painted surfaces or rubber parts. Use soap and water on paint, plastic and rubber. Ensure that the Cable Wheel Assembly and the Carriage Cable are clean of any oil or lubricant to prevent the cable from slipping during operation. Fitting the duplicator to other 12" lathes This Lathe Duplicator is designed as a companion to the Woodtek 12" Wood Lathe. It will fit other 12" wood lathes that have a 1-3/4" bed gap and 36" between centers. It will also fit 12" x 36" wood lathes with other bed gaps with the addition of accessory lathe bed locking plates. Make duplicate turnings 1. Adjust the duplicator carriage so the copying shaft tracer is against the widest point of the template. If a sample turning is used, turn the sample turning so the widest point faces away from the duplicator (Figure 13). The duplicator cutter should just clear the widest point of the workpiece. If not, reposition the duplicator. Caution: Before turning on the power, ensure that all lathe and duplicator components are securely locked down. 2. Start the lathe at a slow speed and check that all components are tight and secure. Increase the speed as necessary depending on the size of the workpiece. 3. Rough turn the spindle into its initial round form by moving the carriage into the wood in 1/8" increments. Sweep the carriage back and forth while moving the cutter progressively deeper into the workpiece (Figure 14). 4. Keep attention focused on the tracer and template stopping just short of contact at each successive pass. 5. Carefully work from the widest to the narrowest portions of the template creating the basic outline of the form (Figure 15). 6. After the basic roughed out form is complete, increase the speed and make the final finishing cut (Figure 16). Keep the tracer shaft against the template while carefully following the pattern moving the carriage handwheel and the carriage feed wheel in unison producing the final duplicate turning. Figure 13 Figure 14 Figure 15 4 Figure 16 9

With the lathe bed locking plates loosened, position the duplicator so the carriage cutter point lines up with the spindle point on the headstock (Figure 10). Copying center Copying tracer Move the carriage to the tailstock and align the cutter point with the tailstock live center point. 8. Move the carriage back and forth until both the headstock and tailstock center points line up with the cutter point and then tighten the lathe bed locking plates Figure 9 OPERATION Attach a template or sample to the duplicator 1. Templates made of plexiglass, aluminum or other suitably hard materials will produce more accurate duplicates. To attach a template, position the four template support brackets (3) and mount the template to the brackets as necessary (Figure 11). The center line of the template spindle should line up with the center line of the copying centers. Figure Right Cable Wheel Assembly 2. Carriage Stop 3. Template Support 4. Duplicator Frame 12. To attach a sample turning, position the sample turning between centers and slide the right copying center into the rear of the spindle. Tighten the nuts and then use the center wheel adjuster (22) to tighten the spindle between centers (Figure 12). Loosen the set screw on the carriage copying tracer (16) and push it down flush with the top of the carriage ensuring tracer contact with the sample turning. Figure Carriage Cable 6. 6 LatheDuplictr(1/12) 10/30/06 8:20 AM Page 6 ASSEMBLY Attach mounting brackets to the lathe bed 1. Remove the tool rest base from the lathe bed and position the tailstock at the far end of the lathe bed. 2. Lay the two mounting brackets (18) on the lathe bed with the offset end of the plate facing down and toward the front side of the lathe (Figure 1). For an initial setup, position the two mounting brackets about 6 before either end of the lathe bed and straddle the brackets evenly across the bed ways (Figure 2). 3. Put washers on the two lathe bed plate bolts (19) and put the bolts through the long slot on the bracket and through the center of the bed gap. 4. Bring the lathe bed locking plates (17) under the bed gap with the shorter step between the bed ways and bring the nuts up snug securing the mounting rackets to the bed. Do not tighten the bracket nuts all the way. Figure 1 Figure 2 Mounting bracket positions Attach handwheel and check the carriage 1. Place the handwheel (11) onto the hand wheel shaft. Align the set screw with the flat on the shaft and tighten down the set screw. Screw on the hex nut to secure the set screw in place. 2. Attach the handwheel handle to the handwheel if not attached. 3. Test the handwheel and cable system by running the duplicator carriage (8) back and forth across the duplicator frame. 4. Adjust the cable adjuster (9) if necessary and ensure that there are no lubricants on the cable system (Figure 5). To tighten the cable, loosen nut A, adjust tension bolt B by turning it clockwise and then tighten nut A. 5. If the carriage still does not run freely, adjust the tracking tension screws by loosening the nuts and adjusting the set screws (Figure 6). Align the duplicator with the lathe 1. Put the duplicator cutter (15) into the cutter head assembly (7) (Figure 7). Figure 5 Figure 6 Cable adjuster Attach duplicator to the mounting brackets 1. Slide the two duplicator plate bolts (20) into the slot on the bottom of the Lathe Duplicator (Figure 3). 2. Set the lathe duplicator frame (4) onto the mounting brackets lining up the duplicator plate bolts into the two holes in the offset ends of the mounting brackets (Figure 4). 3. Screw on the duplicator plate nuts and washers (20) and tighten them down. Figure 3 Duplicator plate bolts 2. Put drive and live centers into the headstock and tailstock of the lathe. 3. With the bed plate bolts slightly loosened, position the duplicator so that the point of the left spindle copy center (10) lines up adjacent to the drive center point on the headstock (Figure 8). Don t worry about depth yet. 4. Bring the carriage all the way to the left and turn the duplicator carriage feed hand wheel (14) counter-clockwise bringing the cutter tip shaft all the way into the carriage.
