Maximum depth of cut should not exceed half of the cutting edge length. inishing eed The chips must have a suitable form to be evacuated without damaging the surface of the bore. The required surface finish restricts the maximum feed for any given nose radius; choice of geometry hence becomes very important. y using a wiper insert, the surface finish can be retained at higher feeds. owever, the wiper inserts exert more radial pressure, increasing the risk for vibrations. Cutting speed The cutting speed is not as much limited by tool life as of vibration tendencies. This is particularly valid when bars with small diameters are used. Therefore starting values are recommended to be no more than 50% of that recommended for external turning and for the smaller boring bars ft/min. Cutting fluid When possible, cutting fluid should be used in all boring operations to quickly transport chips away from the cutting zone and out of the bore. Depth of cut When finish boring the maximum depth of cut is not so much related to the size of the insert as to the geometry (Generally a p = inch). The recommended inserts are designed to work at small depths of cut. When excessive depths of cut are used, the chips have a tendency stick between work piece and tool and damage the machined surface and or cause the cutting edge to break. nsert nose radius and geometry Vibrations can be caused by unsuitable insert geometry, lead angle, nose radius, etc. Generally, inserts should have positive top rakes, sharp cutting edges and small nose radii. The lead angle should be as close to 0 degrees as possible. The CoroTurn 107 and 111 knife edge inserts meet these requirements and are recommended as first choice for finish boring. Radial cutting forces are directly related to the size of the nose radius. A larger nose radius will deflect a boring bar more than a smaller nose radius and be more susceptible to vibrations. Recommended nose radius for finish boring is.008 inch. Nose radii larger than.016 inch should be avoided. Geometries optimized for finish boring nserts for general turning are also used for finish boring. Please see page A9 for an overview. owever, new TCX inserts for Coroore 825 in insert sizes T1.2, T1.8 and T2 with nose radius.008 inch, are now available in geometries optimized for use in finish boring. The new insert design ensures an improved chip form, allowing easier evacuation from the workpiece to preserve surface finish. The new geometries are based on Wiper technology for good surface finish at close tolerances and high feeds. Cutting data and chip control 6

Sandvik Coromant offers the successful concept of Rigid Clamping (RC) for ceramics. The RC system brings safe and secure clamping to flat and holed ceramic inserts and is recommended particularly for materials and operations involving large and varying cutting forces. The RC holders with carbide pressure plates have good chip steering properties and reduce erosion in high speed applications.
