Although to some degree good is in the eye of the beholder, there are some general design rules which he outlined that most people find pleasing. Silicon Valley Woodturners and Bay Area Woodturners clubs collaborated in 2005 on this subject, and the consensus at the time still holds true. Some of the items discussed were: Pleasant, continuous, no flat spots, no abrupt changes Balance Weightless Golden Mean / Divided into thirds Point of interest Floating small foot Curve goes through the foot Simple decoration Form follows function Eye movement Smooth transition continuity View in context Shape creates emotion and balance Perceived weight Size doesn t matter Esthetics Expectation Like it or not first impression We always compare Two or more things One thing vs. our mind Based on your training / experience Conflict Shape versus figure Does it engage me? Conscious versus unconscious Sum of all qualities: the whole = appeal Continued on page 13 Chris Pytlik s Signature Dye Stain Process March 6 (9 AM to 5 PM) Chris Pytlik will give a full day demonstration on March 6 th at Rich s Woodturning Center and will show us the ins and outs of his signature dye staining process. Chris turns thin wall hollow forms from burl which he dyes from the inside, letting the dye bleed thru the burl. He is also a master of lacquer, spraying multiple coats to build a deep finish, which he rubs and buffs out wet using products and processes from the musical instrument industry. This results in a glass smooth, very deep mirrored finish which looks great on his burl hollow form vessels. Chris says his style can best be described as ''Transformative Glazed Wood''. Chris also does natural hollow forms, salad bowls, natural edge bowls, spheres and an occasional platter. For more information on Chris and his work visit his website at Overview & photos by Dean Adkins More photos of Chris work on page 8.

How did you like the seating arrangement change last meeting? I have received some comments and would like to hear more. We need to increase the lighting on the presenter so the turning can be seen and photographs will be taken as the presentation is done at the March meeting, this will allow Jim and Colin to partake in the presentation. We had some 24 members present their President s Challenge and 14 members participate in Show and Tell. Should you have not been at the meeting, take a close look at the photos there are some real creative turnings. The Presidents Challenge for March is Made From 4 X 4. To receive credit you must provide evidence the turning block meets the challenge, photo showing the size or a cross section, electronic images will not be accepted. We have an opportunity to show our appreciation to Rich and Michele Johnson for the years of dedication and support to SVW. The Johnson s have decided it is time to sell their home and move. If you feel you can help them during this process please let them know. The Johnsons move decision presents SVW with the challenge of moving itself. I will be having a discussion period during the March meeting to cover what SVW needs to do and how we are going to accomplish this task. It is obvious we need a meeting place; we have up to 60 members attending, for our monthly meetings. Additionally we need a place for demonstrations, picnic, Holiday party, storage for our equipment, library and apparel. Should you have suggestion please contact me or another staff member. Stay turning, Ard We re Movin!! By Rich Johnson The next step for the bank is to foreclose this place. We have been notified to Get Out, Sell or Whatever. The house is now on the market for sale. I will keep the sawdust sessions going as long as I can. SVW will need a new home. The March Demo should be ok, but not the May demo. This house was purchased with SVW and my WTC in mind, it has been a wonderful ride and life changing for us here. The SVW Support has been great and fun. We have done a lot together and have enjoyed it all. So now it is time for all of us to move on and find new homes. As things change, and they will, I will let you know. We have no Idea what we can do or where at this point. Michelle and I want to thank you all for your support in the past, and now through these transitional times for us all. The challenge for us now is to pack and get this place ready for Show / Sale Open Houses etc. Rich Keep it Round Join us Wednesday, March 2nd, at 7 P.M., (still) at Rich Johnson's Turning Center, located behind his home at 14,979 Joanne Ave., San Jose. From Hwy. 680, take the McKee Road exit East about 1.5 miles to Toyon Ave. Turn left and go 0.6 mile, turn right onto Joanne Ave. Bring your chair and items for Show and Tell. We all learn together. March President's Challenge: Made from 4 x 4 Dave Fiend will demonstrate the skew, specifically why you should take the time to learn the tool. Roughing, creating cylinders, tops, etc. He will cover sharpening and profiles. Everyone is encouraged to bring your skews and bedans so we can compare. $VW Renewal$ are due and Craig will be available to collect from the few who have not already renewed. To maintain your SVW membership, your renewal must be received by the March meeting. Page 2

es and shapes, coming down in favor of a rounded-heel skew as his primary pen. Then he starts to burn the walrus design. From the SVW Library Secrets to Woodturning, Airbrushing, Texturing, & Piercing, by Brian McEvoy (#159) Phil Roybal Brian McEvoy is a master of several embellishment techniques, and he begins this two-dvd set with pyrography (woodburning). Unlike most presenters, however, Brian jumps right in, with no menus, introductions, or explanations of what he s going to be doing. It s a bit abrupt. Brian begins by showing several drawing books he uses as sources for the animal figures with which he embellishes his turnings. He will burn a walrus onto the side of a deep hollow form to introduce the woodburning technique. Brian uses Saral transfer paper to trace the walrus image from a photocopy onto his vase. He points out that great embellishment on a poor form doesn t work. It s not a substitute for design or craftsmanship. He discusses different burning pen siz- He has a slow, deliberate technique, and prefers to use low heat and go over lines several times to get the depth he wants. Once he s outlined his image with the skew pen, he switches to a ball pen and begins to stipple in a random texture, shading in the walrus figure. Where he burns too much, Brian scrapes off the burn marks with an Xacto knife, to get crisp white wood to show between closely spaced lines. This is a very useful technique for getting fine details, such as the glint of an eye or a whisker. He also uses a micro grinder to scrape away burned areas and produce highlights. The second DVD focuses on airbrushing. Brian introduces frisket, a transparent masking material he uses to shield a workpiece for airbrushing. After he secures frisket in place over a traced design, he can cut around the figures, leaving bits of masking over eyes or other highlight areas. Then he sprays through the frisket mask with opaque airbrush color, building up his decoration one color at a time in different areas of the image. The DVD set has nice production values, with lots of fine close-ups. It s a bit slow moving at times, but a good explanation of how to use pyrography and airbrushing to enhance a turning. Check it out in the SVW Library! Page 3

President s Challenge Stemmed Ard Sealy showed an apple with a turned stem, entitled Apple a Day. The wood is Pink Flame (Peru) and Wenge (stem); there is no finish. He also showed a goblet. Norm Robinson For his makeup for laminated (January challenge); Norm showed a segmented bottle stopper, which sits on top of and covers top of the wine bottle. It has a polished finish. Herb Green took a Padauk bottle stopper blank and made a mini goblet; it has a CA glue finish Phil Roybal showed a two-axis turning of a musical 1/8 note, f note and it rests on a brazed steel staff stand. It was completed with a band saw and a shellac finish. Note (no pun intended) a musical note has a stem. Johnny Alias turned 2 stemmed items (note: there is no double credit): A standard goblet and smoking pipe that actually works (he did not demonstrate). The pipe is turned from Apple mounted on a Vicmarc Chuck and the stem was drilled and then mounted between centers. The goblet started from a blank of Walnut and Apple glued up, mounted on a faceplate and then turned. Both pieces were finished with sanding sealer, 50 50, and Carnauba wax. The glass was glued up with epoxy after the stem was finished. Page 4

Rich Johnson showed us a laminated Walnut goblet that he turned last month in case his other piece was not accepted. Rich also did a toothpick holder. The finish is sanding sealer and lacquer using spindle and bowl gouges, a parting took, Viking, scraper and VM 120 chuck. Tom Schmida - For the January challenge makeup (laminated), Tom turned a box, from a piece of laminate given by somebody that makes cross bows for spear fishing; he is not sure what the wood is. For stemmed, Tom turned an Olive goblet with a kind of natural edge. He tried to make a Walnut sphere for the cup but it broke. Don Bianucci turned a rare and endangered flower display with a stem. The wood is maple and it has a painted finish. He claimed that we are probably the only group that will see it. It is called Maple daisy. Last year John Whittier made 8 goblets for his church; now they want more. This is a Walnut Eucharist Goblet finished with5 coats of wipe on poly, sanded between each coat with 1000 grit foam backed abralon. Jim Benson also turned a goblet, from unknown wood (probably ash), with a short stem and finished with Ren wax. Page 5

Dean Adkins turned a goblet, from Cherry root, with a captured ring, and a Walnut oil finish. Dean explained how he used the rotation of the lathe to sand the inside of the captured ring. Mike Lanahan Poplar Apple w Purple Heart Stem. Poplar wood apple painted red enamel (couldn t find candy apple red) and finished with a clear coat of lacquer. Apple consists of 4 segments; it opens up and is held together with magnets. Each segment has a laminated layer covering the countersunk magnet. Bob Gerenser A Trio of Tulips. Bob turned a group of Tulips and arranged them in a stand. The flower blanks were drilled and fitted onto a ¾ inch dowel jam chuck for turning (from American Woodworker Spring 1999 issue). The stems were spindle turned and steam bent. The leaves were a 3-piece laminate, turned and separated. The tulips are painted white but the mushroom is also a stemmed turning and finished with mineral oil. The tulips are painted white. The flowers and leaves are poplar, the turned stems are Red Oak, the base is Redwood and the mushroom is Walnut. Bob also entertained us by reading a Paul Lynde poem: I don t know what to say A tulip talked to me today I was trimming the hedge Quite near the mountain ledge When lo and behold My blood ran cold Yes, a tulip SCREAMED at me today It was my favorite The one I call Blanche She puckered up her petals and screamed AVALANCHE! Yes, a tulip saved my life today Now you may not think this quite so much But you see Most tulips speak Dutch Page 6

Ron Geren showed a pot for a makeup for January s laminated challenge. It is kind of a cross between an urn, pot, and vessel. The pot is laminated with Hawaiian Koa for the base, 2 pieces of Baltic Birch for the body, and Cherry for the top. It is finished with sanding sealer and crystal coat and buffed in between with wax. Ron explained that he is turning a lot with expansion mode on his chuck and becoming quite comfortable with that technique. For stemmed, Ron turned a mushroom (unknown neighborhood wood) and noted that the stalk is called a stem. Marcus Moody For stemmed, Marcus was going to turn a goblet but instead did a clock tower from Blood Wood and finished with candle wax. For next month, Marcus showed a snifter turned from the leg of an old workbench; he is not sure of the wood but likely Douglas fir. Unfortunately, Ard did not accept this piece because the challenge is 4 inches by 4 inches. Dick Westfall This is Dick s first president s challenge submission; he figured it was time and he wanted some abuse. He turned a saucer on a stem from Beech and Walnut, finished with Minwax antique oil and wax. Lonnie Hurst A piece titled Termites & Acrylic and explained, I wanted to try weird things. The entire work came from one piece of wood; Liquid Amber (with termite tracks) and Blood wood, Laminated. He took cardboard tube and filled it with heavy foam and moved the tube so that he could keep cutting down. Lonnie said it was fun but I won t ever do again. It is finished with Watco and sanding sealer Scott Landon tried something different which seems redundant. Scott turned a goblet from Pinion Pine and, using indexing plates, created slots on his own. The thru slots were an accident so he went all the way through. The finish is mineral oil. Page 7

Craig Thorson showed a collaborative piece, in that Rich helped, a Myrtle wedding goblet, with a ring. That s 2 successful challenges in a row. Howard Cohen presented a thin stemmed goblet from some wood lying in the woodpile. Stem is about 1/8 of an inch but wished he had gone a bit thinner as there is still quite a bit of strength in the stem. Finish is sanding sealer and French polish. Colin Mackenzie A trio of everlasting flowers. The 3 stems are Ash and the flowers are planted in a Manzanita burl base. The nuts are tropical, partially hollowed, and were purchased nuts at Albuquerque. The finish is More photos of Chris Pytlik s work, continued from page 1 Page 8

Italian Elegance ; an Olive bowl with raised feet that cracked and so John Whittier put in an accent piece. It is a little bit thick and wobbles a bit on a flat surface. He experimented with a matte wipe on poly gel finish not sure that he likes it. It is 11 inches in diameter, 3 inches deep. Scott Landon turned a bowl from Camphor, and added a scalloped edge. It is finished with Minwax wipe on Tung oil and has several coats so far. Using Walnut from wood here at last month s raffle, Tom Schmid turned a bowl; he is happy with the bowl. The finish is polished with EEE, etc. He identified some tear out that he missed until it was too late to repair. Colin Mackenzie turned a Black Acacia string dispenser mimicking an egg and eggcup. It started off as a stem but was told it would not be allowed hence show and tell. Brian Butler showed us a Puzzle Cutting Board from Walnut and Ambrosia Maple. He explained that David Feind helped Brian cut the interlocking pieces on his CNC lathe. The piece is a gift for his Dad. The cutting board comes apart and the smaller pieces can be used as individual trays for holding a wine glass, e.g. at a cocktail party. In addition, pieces can be exchanged to change color composition, etc. And you can keep adding extensions to make a larger cutting board. Plans are currently in CAD software. Page 9

Ron Geren explained that he contributes work at the Artistic Edge studio in Livermore. Furthermore, a blacksmith is now also contributing work and only deals in metal. So the proprietor asked Ron to come up with chopping blocks and cheese trays to complement the metal pieces/chopping tools created by the blacksmith. E.g. Ron showed prototypes for a pizza cutter, cheese cutter, a vegetable slicer, and an herb knife. The knife perimeter is not a circle segment so it won t match the inside of the cutting bowl. Some were faceplate turnings while others were turned with a chuck in expansion mode and some with MDF with double-sided tape. To remove double side tape someone noted that you can drip acetone and the tape will release. Jim Benson said he wasn t happy with his laminated submission for January, so he created a laminated oil lamp with an inlay from Cherry, Walnut, and Redwood. It is finished with high friction lacquer. Next Jim explained that he saw a Beth Ireland slide show turning 4-foot diameter columns, 20 long. At her shop he made a Mahogany whistle (also high friction lacquer finish), which he showed tonight. And Jim showed a magnet jig he made to hold the spindle lock on his Powermatic. Dean Adkins explained that his chain saw maintenance person likes popcorn so Dean made a Pecan bowl (and now gets free lifetime chain saw maintenance). A crack was filled with CA glue and he added a 3/16 bead on top to hide cracks. It is 105 by 6 inches. Norm lazered credentials on the bottom. Page 10
