Rich Mike... Cunningham, continued on page 10 Carbide Tools Mike Cunningham, is the owner of Woodcraft, Dublin, and demonstrated the use of carbide tools, primarily the Easy Wood Tools brand. Carbide tools are particularly good for new turners. They don t require the added expense of a grinder, sharpening jigs and a learning curve for sharpening, and their use is relatively easy to learn. Hold the tool flat on the At our last meeting Ard announced that the Picnic had been postponed. Well, with some brainstorming between Ard and Colin the picnic is re-scheduled for Saturday, October 5, at Rich and Michelle Johnson s, Joanne Ave., San Jose. Our monthly meeting will not be held Wednesday, Oct. 2, but will be incorporated into the picnic. The schedule, subject to change: Start time 10:00 AM Nomination of 2014 officers, November President's Challenge & Show and Tell. 2 or 3 very short demo's TBD, could be just one, Meeting ends at 11:30. Short break, set up for picnic competition tool rest, with the cutter at the centerline of the turning, and push in. Too high and it may catch, too low and you will scrape instead of cutting. You can move side to side in both directions after your blank is round. Mike demonstrated both the Rougher square cutter on the outside, and the round Finisher cutter on the inside of a bowl. He also showed the triangular Detailer cutter for finer features. Back to Rich s Shop! The meetings through the rest of the year are scheduled for Rich Johnson s workshop, Joanne Ave., San Jose. See details on page :50 or earlier entries begin while we enjoy appetizers and drinks. Judging to begin promptly after turning entry is completed. Picnic lunch while votes are tallied and Bob picks President's winner. Results announced followed by cleanup and any additional socializing Estimate ending by 4:30 pm. 2 By Bob Gerenser As I See It I would like to take this time and this forum to thank the Eagles San Jose Aerie #8 Board of Trustees for allowing Silicon Valley Woodturners to use their hall for monthly meetings. The hall served our club well during a time of uncertainty and the Eagle s generosity is greatly appreciated. Special thanks also go to our own C. Grant Beech for his efforts in establishing this relationship. I will also repeat myself and remind members that we do have a commitment to the Eagles to provide one well-turned piece from each member (for those who have been a member from the beginning of the year). If you have not completed a piece for donation, please make that a priority. But, I understand; it s summertime, and the livin is easy! School is out and the grandkids need a sitter. Your (almost) adult offspring is home from college and living under your roof again. Your better half didn t forget about all those outside chores you were going to do as soon as it gets nice out. And it s time to hit the open road for a couple of weeks and do some serious sight-seeing, because you deserve a vacation, too. Add to that the fact that your shop isn t air-conditioned and it s easy to see why wood turning may take a back seat this time of year. But, as I see it, we should fulfill our commitments first. Enough said, have a great summer! Bob Join us Wednesday, August 7 (the First Wednesday of the month, at 7:00 P.M., at Rich Johnson's Center, located behind his home at Joanne Ave., San Jose. From Hwy. 680, take the McKee Road exit East about 1.5 miles to Toyon Ave. Turn left and go 0.6 mile, turn right onto Joanne Ave. Bring your chair. Bring items for President s Challenge, Show & Tell, and Eagle Aerie Donation. We learn by sharing. President's Challenge for August: A Pen - Not from a Kit. Please register your entry online (Yahoo Groups, Database) no later than 4:00 PM the day of the meeting to be eligible. Program: The August meeting program is Turning Elliptical shapes? by Ard Sealy. Dinner before the Meeting: For those who would like to get together for dinner before the meeting, we meet at 5:30 PM. at Ana s Café (Mexican Restaurant) in the Toyon Center at McKee Rd and Toyon Ave. 428 Toyon Ave, San Jose, CA 95127, Phone: (408) Coming Attractions: September - Top Night October - Picnic Page 2

3 Introduction to Segmented Turning with Curt Theobald. #182 From the SVW Library By Jim Benson Introduction to Segmented Turning with Curt Theobald. This video is the first in a series. I already have reviewed the second video not realizing there was a first video. The first section deals with how to make a segment ring with no gaps. He recommends 80 grit sandpaper to get a better joint, and covers how to mount the sandpaper to the disk. Curt goes into detail on all of the following issues, as well: Calibration of the sander Construction of the sanding sled Calibration of fence. Constructing rings. Construction of an angle stop. Sawing segments Sanding the segment's. Calibrating the angle stop. Glue up the half segments True up ring face This is a good introduction to segmented turning and is well worth a look. Check It Out! Check out the 2 minutes 13 second YouTube video on this DVD: v=ho6zqhhvan4 Our Programs Need Your Help. By Colin Mackenzie We have a good woodturning club, but a first-rate woodturning newsletter that has been judged the second-best in the country. Our aim for the future should be to turn a good club into a first-rate club. I don t think we have the capacity to make it the second-best in the country but at least we can aim high by trying. This is where your help comes in. Too many of us sit by and act like we are at a restaurant, but not any sort of restaurant the sort of restaurant we want to dine at has no menu because it s not needed. We are unwilling to say what we want so no menu is necessary. We just wait to be served what ever comes our way. When we don t like the fare we too often don t offer to pull up our sleeves put on an apron and help in the kitchen to provide the sort of food we want. Some of us just decide to quit going to the restaurant. That doesn t help the restaurant because when that happens restaurants frequently disappear. The writer (one of the cooks) needs some help. Many of you are very accomplished at making things I have no ability to make, so here is my challenge: Tell me what you like to make, and are good at making, and teach the rest of us how to make it. If enough of you do that we will begin again to have a menu that every one will look forward to ordering from at least once a month. Who knows, if we do that maybe our Newsletter will win first in the country next year. Certainly, if our editor has any chance of doing that he also needs good ingredients. Excellent though he is, our Editor is no magician. Even he can t make something out of nothing. Page 3

I took this as an omen it was time to stop turning for the night. Rich Johnson - Goblet X Medallion X Knob X Bottle stopper Rj finish walnut Tom Schmida - Pendant; walnut/maple finish poly The Challenge: Turn a Wood Hollow Form. The Rules: Contestants will be given a 6 X 6 X 6 cardboard box. The hollow form must fit in the closed box without bulging the sides. The hollow form opening cannot be larger than 1 ½ diameter. The hollow form must be turned from one piece of wood - No Segmented or otherwise built up entries will be judged. The Catch: A maximum of seventy five points will be awarded for appearance, style, form, surface, finish and the finger test. The other twenty five points will be awarded to the entry that HOLDS THE MOST DRY RICE. I will set each entry on a table and pour in dry rice until the rice spills over the top. I will then pour the rice out and weigh it. The entry that holds the most rice will get the points for that part of the judging. As I see it, if you re going after a Benjamin, you re going to have to earn it! See me for a box, if you want to play. Bob Page 5

7 Trivet By Mike Lanahan Ever since David Springett demonstrated at our club, there has been a project I have wanted to make. Not the nested Chinese balls he is noted for, but a simple trivet made with the grooving techniques he demonstrated for making his decorative box lids. This month s President s challenge was my excuse to follow up on this project. Since a falling skew bisected a lamp cord, my challenge was interrupted. I took this as an omen it was time to stop turning for the night. When I returned to the lathe the next day, I looked at it and thought the partial turning mounted on the faceplate, with the drawing adhering to the exposed face actually told the story of how it was done better than the finished piece would. Strangely enough, when I brought the finished trivet to Sawdust the next week, there were all kinds of questions regarding the trivet. I guess the unfinished work was not compelling enough to generate interest. I started with a piece of 1/2 thick zebra wood. Ideally, for both esthetic and production reasons, this would be done with 2 contrasting woods, sandwiched together, say 1/4 thick maple, glued to 1/4 purple heart or walnut. This project requires some planning. This isn t just a slap it on the lathe and see what the wood tells me to do proposition. I made a drawing for concentric circles on one side of the piece, as well as 3 smaller circles on the other side. One key design point is to have the center of the 3 circles center on a groove of the big circles on the other side. This is where screw holes will go to hold the off-center turning in place while being turned. The grooves need to be at least as large in width as the screws that will mount the turning while turning. For a pleasing look, I chose to make the grooves and the remaining islands roughly 1/2 the wood thickness, give or take. I didn t draw all the rings of the 3 circles, to reduce clutter. I printed the drawing and used spray adhesive to mount it on my board. I used a 45 degree jig to lop off the corners, before mounting on the lathe. I screwed a 3/4 piece of plywood to a faceplate, turned it round and then screwed the blank to the plywood, with the cnter of the piece in the center of the plywood. I used 4 more screws on the scrap area outside the turning pattern to keep the blank from spinning. I turned the concentric ring side first. This allows drilling the 3 center holes for the 3 rings in the center of the groove of the first side. Springett used a custom made tool, just the width of the grooves he was making. This is a great idea, but pressed for time, I couldn t find tool stock to grind down, so just used 1/8 parting tools to cut the grooves. I used the depth measurement of calipers to see when I had cut just over 1/2 way through the thickness of the blank. This was tedious, and 2 contrasting sandwiched woods would have given and automatic clear indication when the cut was deep enough. After all the grooves are cut, I used a beading tool to round the tops of the wood rings that were left. With screws through the 3 ring s centers, and the outer screws removed, turn the trivet round. Flip it over, with one of the 3 rings center screwed to the turning center, and screws through the other 2 centers, as well as the trivet center to secure it. Repeat the process for the 3 smaller rings as performed on the first side, but this time the depth indicator is whether the cut grooves are clear. Hand sand, and finish. Hans Weisflog it aint, but it s OK for a trivet. Got a slick Tip or Trick you d like to share? Have a problem for which you need advice? 8 Mark Gardner's Demo Topics November 8 & 9 (WBW & BAWA) 1. Turn hollow forms without the hollowing. Cut it in half. Hollow forms turned through a small opening were always a challenge for me to turn. In this demo I'll show how I make hollow forms, using green wood, much like you make lidded boxes only I'll glue the lid back on. Not only is there less risk of turning through the side of your vessel but it is also easier to gauge the wall thickness as well as remove the shavings from the inside. I'll focus on techniques for making a precise joint to help insure that the piece stays together as it dries. Time will be spent demonstrating various ways to then hide the seam in your vessel. This vessel will also have handles. 2. Surface embellishment for your turnings. I will demonstrate all the various techniques and methods I use for embellishing my work. I ll start by showing how I layout geometric patterns on my turned vessels. Some of the techniques I ll cover include, carving with hand and power tools, engraving, and even some textures done on the lathe. I ll show how I use milk paints and dyes to enhance the carved patterns and lastly how I sharpen my carving tools using a simple homemade MDF strop. 3. Turn a square bowl using three different axis. In this demo I will illustrate my own take on the idea of a square bowl. Not only will I use three different axis to turn this bowl but I will also hold the bowl on the lathe using 2x4's, masking tape, hot glue and drywall screws. This demo will help to illustrate my approach to turning and the use of the lathe as a tool for shaping wood, not just for making it round. Mark Gardner's Bio: As long as I can remember I ve enjoyed working with my hands. As a teenager I worked in clay and mixed media. Woodworking was my father s hobby and when I was sixteen I was enrolled in a Saturday woodworking class with him at the Ohio College of Applied Science. The class focused on the use of hand tools rather than machines in the building process. I found the use of chisels and planes (when they were sharp) calm and enjoyable. I remained in the class; slowly building Shaker inspired furniture until I graduated from college. I started turning on my father s lathe one day when I wanted a short 3-legged stool for my room. I was hooked. In 1996 I received a scholarship to attend a class at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts with John Jordan. By this time I had been turning with modest success throughout my years in college. The class changed my life. I hadn t had that much concentrated time at the lathe and in a couple of weeks I felt my abilities had greatly improved. Ever since this class turning is what I ve wanted to do. I ve been back to Arrowmont many times to assist John s classes as well as teach my own. I turn primarily green wood due to its availability as well as its ease of use compared to dry wood. Lately my work only begins on the lathe. Now much of the time that goes into a piece is spent carving intricate surface patterns. Many things, besides the material, influence my work, including the simple lines of Shaker furniture as well as the carved and painted surfaces of African shields and the beautifully detailed ceremonial war clubs of the Oceanic cultures. Over the last few years I ve been teaching more and more. I ve been an instructor at Arrowmont, JC Campbell Folk School, Penland School of Crafts, Anderson Ranch and The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. I was a demonstrator at the AAW s Richmond symposium in 2008 and have lead workshops and given demonstrations for woodturning clubs around the USA and in Canada. Page 8
