Please read and understand the manual content before beginning your roof installation in order to ensure a trouble free installation and maintain applicable warranties. If you have any questions regarding the installation of your metal roof system, please contact Westman Steel. Always wear proper personal safety equipment when working with metal roofing panels and trims. Westman Steel recommends eye protection, ear protection, gloves and fall protection when working with sheet metal roofing products. Check with local safety authorities for requirements regarding guards, fall protection and other safe working procedures. Disclaimer By using this Guide, you accept the risks and responsibilities for all losses, damages, costs and other consequences resulting directly or indirectly from using this Guide. These installation instructions are intended as guidelines only. Westman Steel assumes no responsibility for the performance or quality of the roof system installation, nor any personal injury or damage that might occur as a result of improper installation. Avoid working with metal panels on windy days. Do not walk on the panels until they have been completely fastened to the substrate. Do not step on panel ribs. Always step on supports. Metal surfaces can be extremely slippery when wet or covered with frost. Always ensure proper fall protection procedures and equipment are used. Avoid working on wet or snow covered roofs. Westman Steel does not warrant any product or material as meeting the current building codes, laws or regulations of any particular jurisdiction or local municipality. This manual contains suggestions and guidelines on how to install Westman Steel Snap-Lok roof panels and trim details. The contents of this manual include the guidelines that were in effect at the time this publication was originally printed. In an effort to keep pace with the ever-changing code environment, Westman Steel reserves the right to modify, without notice, any specifications and/or designs at any time without incurring any obligations. To insure you have the latest information available, please inquire or visit our web site. Application and design details are for illustrative purposes only and may not be appropriate for all environmental conditions and/or building designs. Projects should be engineered and installed to conform to applicable building codes, regulations, and accepted industry practices. All dimensions should be verified by field measurements prior to ordering materials. Snap-Lok roof panels must be applied on a minimum roof pitch of :12 or greater. Oil canning is an aesthetic phenomenon inherent to light gauge cold formed sheet metal and is characterized by a distortion or waviness of flat surfaces of metal roofing and siding products. As oil canning is an aesthetic issue and does not affect product strength or performance, it is not a cause for rejection. There are several factors that influence this behavior, such as sheet metal thickness, dimensions, installation and system design among others. Oil canning can be minimized by considering these factors mentioned above. See Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute (CSSBI) - Fact Sheet 1, included at the end of this manual for further information. Wear soft rubber-soled shoes when walking on a metal roof to avoid damaging the finish. Cutting Steel roofing panels may be cut with metal snips, power or hand shears or nibblers. Circular saws with metal cutting blades are acceptable. Do not use abrasive blades, as they can burn both the paint and zinc coating leading to premature wear at these areas. When cutting panels, turn the panels face down and cut in a location away from other panels to avoid metal particles embedding in the paint coating of nearby panels. Always remove metal particles from drilling or cutting immediately to avoid damaging the paint finish. Particles, if left on the panel surface can rust overnight. Sheet metal edges are very sharp. Always wear eye protection and gloves when handling or cutting metal sheets. Receiving / Handling Check the delivery of metal roof panels and accessories for quantities and/or damage immediately upon receipt. Note any damage or shortages at the time of delivery. Handle panel bundles and individual panels with care to avoid damage. Generally, Westman Steel recommends that supports are to be located at no more than 10 feet from each other to provide adequate support from buckling or bending. Do not drag sheets on the ground or over each other. Obtain the help of others to transport longer individual panels. 4 Handling Storage Upon receipt of your roofing panels, store them in a well ventilated, dry location. Rain or condensation can be drawn between the stacked sheets where it can cause premature failure of the protective coating. Do not store panels in contact with the ground. Ensure the panels are adequately supported and elevated off the ground, preferably with a slope to allow water to drain. Cover panels with a waterproof cover spaced off the panels to allow air movement. Store panels inside if possible. Spread Forks Evenly Under The Bundle Raise one end to drain moisture and cover with WATErproof tarp allowing air to circulate through the bundle. Tools / Equipment Required 1 Metal shears, nibblers, power shears or circular saw with metal-cutting cutting blade. Note: Saw cut edges USE SPREADER BAR WITH CRANE can be jagged, unsightly and tend to rust sooner than sheared edges. Hot metal filings are produced when saw cutting, which may embed in and damage the paint coating. Also, saw cutting burns the paint and galvanizing treatment, leading to the onset of edge rust. 2 Metal snips (left edge, right edge and centerline cutting snips). 7 Installation over an Existing Roof New Roof Installation Option #1 For best results, Westman Steel recommends removing the existing roofing material prior to installing Snap-Lok roof panels. In some cases; however, Snap-Lok panels can be installed over existing roofing. To ensure a flat surface to anchor the roof panels, first install 2x4 nominal strapping installed horizontally at 12 inches on centre. (Note- panel comes pre-punched slots which are intended for use on solid decking so the holes may not line up with strapping). Next apply Westman Underlayment over top the strapping with appropriate overlaps. Always check with local building codes for specific requirements in your area. Westman Steel Snap-Lok panels are designed for installation over a plywood surface with a minimum thickness of /8. OSB products are not recommended. A new roof installation consists of the following steps: Accurately measure the roof, and create a roof plan for estimating and ordering roof panels and accessories (refer to page 16). Option #2 Additionally, the Snap-Lok panel can be installed over an existing shingle roof. Ideally Westman Snap-Lok roof panels are designed for installation over a solid substrate (/8 minimum plywood). In this case, install 2x4 strapping parallel to the eaves at 12 inches on center, covering the roof to provide a flat, solid surface for installing the Plywood and the new Snap-Lok panels. In high wind areas, add additional strapping at the eave and roof edges to provide additional fastening points for the panels. Prior to installing the roof panels, Westman underlayment must be applied over the entire roof surface, including the 2x4 strapping. Prior to beginning the installation of Snap-Lok panel over an existing roof, the following steps should be followed: Remove any dirt or debris from the roof surface Inspect the roof for damage and make the necessary repairs, paying attention to roof penetrations and flashings Ensure all required roof penetrations are in place before beginning (pluming vents, exhaust, attic venting, etc.) Remove any dirt or debris from the roof surface. Make sure there are no nails or other objects protruding from the roof that may puncture the new underlayment or damage the new roof panels. Install Ice & Water shield at eaves a minimum distance of 6 upslope of the exterior wall, and valleys with one 6 roll centered with the valley. Check with local building codes for specific requirements. Also, install ice & water shield at any penetrations or skylights. Install a full layer of 0-lb building paper (minimum), or Westman underlayment (recommended) (refer to page 18) Secure any loose material Install fascia and eave trims (pages 20, 21) and valley flashings (page 24) Make sure there are no nails or other objects protruding from the roof that may puncture the new underlayment or damage the new roof panels Cut off any existing roofing material overhanging the eaves or rake. Check for squareness and layout the roof installation (page 16) Align the first roof panel with the roof edge, and check for squareness and the proper panel overhang at the eave which will depend on the desired trim. Remove all ridge and hip caps Fasten the first panel with the appropriate fasteners. Install a full layer of underlayment including extra protection at eaves and valleys Install 2x4 strapping from ridge to eave spaced to match the Snap-Lok profile Proceed with roof panel installation refer to page 1 Install the next two panels loosely, constantly checking alignment with the roof. If the panels are correctly aligned, fasten and engage the locking edge of the panels to the adjacent panels. Continue with panel installation, periodically checking alignment and squareness and making adjustments as necessary. 8 Estimating Estimating Before beginning your roof installation, estimate and order all of the materials you will require. To do this, make a drawing of the roof plan and measure all ridges, eaves, gables and valleys. See below for an example roof plan. Measure Roof There are two ways to take measurements to order your Snap-Lok panel system. The first is to take measurements directly from the roof. The second is to use a scaled drawing of the roof plan. Using the first method, start by measuring the following: Roof pitches Eave-to-ridge distances Eaves lengths Ridge lengths Hip / Valley lengths Example Example Roof Plan Your material order can be separated into the following sections: Trims This includes fascia, eave and gable trims and transition flashings. Be sure to account for any overlaps. Straight panels Roof panels that run from the ridge to the eave with both ends of the panel cut at 90 degrees. Angled panels Custom length roof panels that run from ridge to valley or prow gable, or hip to eave. One end of the panels will be cut at an angle on site. Westman Steel does not cut the angles on the panels. Caps This includes ridge, hip and peak caps. Eave to ridge distance = Accessories This includes fasteners, foam closures, sealant tape, caulking, snow retention devices, plumbing flashing and any custom sheet metal and venting materials. 9 Estimating Estimating Number of Panels - Full Length 1. Starting with full length panel runs, measure from the ridge to the eave. Be sure to allow extra depending on the chosen eave detail, and subtract the setback distance from the ridge. The number of panels required for full length runs will be the eave length divided by the panel width - rounded to the next whole number. Number of Panels - Hip / Valley Next, calculate the number of hip / valley panels for each hip or valley. To find the number of valley panels first measure the ridge length for a valley or the eave length for a hip (see diagram below). Then divide this number by the panel width to get the number of hip / valley panels. Example Example Area A: Eave length = (48 ft) x (12 inches per foot) = 76 inches Number of full length panels = 76 inches = 6 full length panels 16 inch panel width Area Av: Ridge length at valley = (1 ft) x (12 inches per foot) = 180 inches Number of valley panels required = 180 inches = 11.2 panels 16 inch panel width Repeat this procedure for all full length panel areas. Since the last panel will be very short and covered by the ridge or hip cap, round down to 11 panels. 10 Estimating Estimating Hip / Valley Panel Lengths Note that each panel on a hip or valley will get shorter or longer as you move across the roof. To find the difference in panel length, you will need to use the roof pitch and refer to the table below. Layout Before installing any components of your roof system, check the roof for squareness. This can be done by measuring the diagonals as shown below. Both measurements should be equal. Snap-Lok Panel Width Roof Pitch 12 Inches 16 Inches 2: : : : :12 7:12 8: A B 9: : : : Roof pitch = 6:12 Panel width = 16 inches Eave to ridge distance = Length of 1 ST panel = or Length of 2 ND panel = = 18.6 Length of RD panel = = Length of 4 TH panel = = Length of TH panel = = Length of 11 TH panel = 22.6 Example Another way to check for square is the triangle method. First, measure 6 feet along the gable end of the roof and mark this point. Then measure 8 feet along the eave, marking this point as well. Then, measure between the 2 marks. If the measurement is exactly 10 feet, then the roof is square. Otherwise corrective measures will need to be applied. Note: This procedure is a general guideline only. The length of the 2 ND and subsequent panels will change if the start of the hip / valley does not line up with the edge of a panel. Be sure to adjust the panel lengths as necessary based on desired trim option. S N A P - L O K I N S T A L L A T I O N M A N U A L 1 7 S N A P - L O K I N S T A L L A T I O N M A N U A L 1 8

11 Westman Underlayment Fastening Westman Steel offers two grades synthetic underlayment for metal roofing, Feltex and Protex (contractor grade). Woven of heavyweight polymer fabric, Feltex and Protex are amond the safest, strongest and best-performing roof underlayments on the market. To complete the metal roof installation, the following fasteners are used in wood-frame construction: Before installing underlayment, ensure that the roof substrate and structure is flat and free from debris. Fastening methods and materials should conform to best building practices and local jobsite conditions. Verify final application to be compliant with the requirements of applicable building codes. Verify compatibility according to geographical region, structure type and roof specification with applicable building codes and/or by review of a building professional. Install FelTex print side up, horizontal (parallel) to the eave, with minimum 6 inch (12 mm) horizontal laps and 6 inch (12 mm) vertical laps. Overlaps shall run with the flow of water in a shingling fashion. Minimum finished roof slope is :12. For roof slopes greater than :12 and less than 4:12 (%), laps shall be increased to 2 inches (6 mm). Extend FelTex one-inch past gable/rake edge, turn down over edge, fasten approximately 4-inches on center and cover with flashing prior to the installation of the final roof covering. Fasteners shall either be corrosive-resistant roofing nails with a minimum head diameter of /8 inches or plastic capped roofing nails with a minimum plastic cap diameter of 1 inch. Fasteners shall be 90º to the roof deck and shall not be under or over driven. #10 x 1 Pancake head wood screws For attaching concealed fastener coverings and roof panels. #10 Hex head wood screw with self-sealing washer, various lengths available Self-sealing screw used for fastening flashings. #14 x 7/8 Stitch screw with self-sealing washer Used to anchor the flashings metal to metal. Stainless steel pop rivets (optional, not supplied by Westman) Used to connect flashings at corners. Fasteners must be properly driven to ensure proper seal and strength and provide allowance for expansion and contraction. See the diagram below for proper sheet metal screw fastening. For applications where FelTex will not be exposed to precipitation prior to the installation of the final roof covering, FelTex may be installed using non-corrosive or stainless steel hammer-tacker staples. Staples shall be applied approximately -inches on center along all overlapped edges of FelTex, ensuring that (1) exposed staples are applied through two layers of properly overlapped underlayment and (2) no staples shall be applied in the field of the underlayment (through only one layer of FelTex). For more information see manufacturer s installation written instructions included in Appendix A. The Snap-Lok panel used a concealed fastener system. One edge of the panel contains a punched flange to accept fasteners, while the other side snaps onto the rib of the adjacent panel. Panel fastening requirements differ based on geographic region, local weather characteristics and building codes. Wind forces on roofs are greatest at the corners and edges. Refer to the image below for typical wind pressure zones. Recommended pancake head fastener spacing for Snap-Lok panels is 1-1/2.
