EAVE EDGE Apply a small strip of roofing paper to the bottom of eave. Eave flashing is attached to substrate with roofing nails every 9". Install underlayment over entire roof. (See Fig. 1) PAGE 1 Bend and notch eave flashing at the hips and valleys so that the eave flashing can be inserted snugly at the bottom of the hip and valley corners. (See Fig. 2) GABLE TRIM The gable trim is to be installed over the roofing felt. Cut the bottom of the gable trim to match the pitch of the roof at the eave. (See Fig. 3) Use two pieces of the gable trim at the ridge apex. Cut the inner area of the first piece, and the drip edge to match the vertical plane at the ridge apex. Once in place, bend the top edge over the ridge and secure with a nail. (See Fig. 4) Cut the second gable trim piece to match the vertical plane of the ridge apex. (See Fig. 5) Join the pieces at the ridge apex with the second trim piece coming overtop of the first trim piece. (See Fig. 6). To connect upper and lower sections of the gable trim, cut off approximately 2" of outer drip edge at an angle, squaring off the exposed surface on the lower section. Leave the main water channel intact and install under the upper uncut section. Add sealant where the two pieces meet. (See Fig. 7) Figure 7
VALLEY FLASHING Before installing any valley flashing, place underlayment over the entire length of the valley. (See Fig. 1) Center the valley flashing on the valley of the roof using the edge of the roof. Scribe the bottom side of the flashing to match the angles where the valley meets the eaves. Cut the bottom of the valley flashing to match the angles of the eaves. (See Fig. 2) Cut the top of the valley flashing to match the angles where the valley meets the ridge. PAGE 2 Center the valley flashing and attach to the roof deck using clips on both sides of the valley spaced 18" apart. (See Fig. 3) When joining upper and lower valley pieces, notch both sides of the lower valley pieces with a cut that is 3" x 1/4". Connect the two valley pieces by inserting the upper piece into the notches cut into the low piece. Apply a bead of caulk along the edge of the upper piece before making the connection. (See Fig. 4) HIP FLASHING The hip flashing is installed in a similar fashion as the valley. Center the hip flashing on the hip of the roof. Cut the bottom of the hip flashing to match the angles where the hip meets the eaves. Cut the top of the hip flashing to match the angles where the valley meets the ridge. (See Fig. 5) SIDEWALL FLASHING Install sidewall flashing underneath wall coverings (stucco, siding) and existing flashings where possible. Install sidewall flashings to roof deck with clips 18" on center. (See Fig. 6)
INSTALLING STEEL SHINGLE PANELS Start shingle installation at the bottom left corner of the roof. Cut the left side of the next two rows. Cut the first shingle panel of the second row 2/3 of the full length. Cut the first panel of the third row 1/3 of the full length. (See Fig. 1) PAGE 3 Following this staggered pattern will give the most random effect on the roof. Start with a full panel making sure the bottom of the first row interlocks with eave drip edge. Applying slight pressure, insert the lower left hand into gable trim flashing. Insert the panel tightly, then pull the panel back 1/16" to allow for thermal expansion so that the panels do not buckle. (See Fig. 2) For the first shingle, cut a 2" notch in the return of the bottom lock to allow water to drain freely through the gable trim. (See Fig. 3) Fasten to the roof deck with 3 clips at the top of the shingle panel, place fasteners (screws) through the hole at the center of the clip. (See Fig. 4) When installing the shingle panels into the installed valley flashing and hip flashing, use the center line of the hip or valley as a guide. Scribe a line on the panel parallel to the valley. The panel is then cut along this line to allow the panel to be inserted into the valley. (See Fig. 5) At the ridge of the roof deck cut the last row of shingles so that there is approx. 2" of deck exposed at the peak. Attach the top of the shingle panels to the deck with nails 12" apart. (See Fig. 6)
CHIMNEY & SKYLIGHT FLASHING DETAILS Cut the last row of shingles below the skylight (or chimney) as close as possible to the skylight. (See Fig. 1) PAGE 4 Install end wall flashing to bottom of the skylight. Cut it to fit around the bottom of the skylight, allowing the bottom of the flashing to extend past the sides by 3". (See Fig. 2) Install sidewall flashing to the sides of the skylight, over the last row of shingles below the skylight and over the end wall flashing. (See Fig. 3) Cut and fold back the side lip of the flashing to allow the next row of shingles. (See Fig. 4) Cut the top of the sidewall flashing so it extends past the top of the skylight by 12". Cut and fold the flashing over the top of the skylight. (See Fig. 5) Continue to install shingles up the sides past the top of the skylight. Cut and fold back top lock on shingles directly above the skylight. (See Fig. 6) Install pan flashing at the top of the skylight. (See Fig. 7) Install continuous cleat on top of the pan flashing aligned with the next row of shingles. Use sealant below and attach with nails every 12". Install first row of shingle panels above the skylight. (See Fig. 8) Figure 7 Figure 8
CONTINUOUS CLEAT / TRANSITION SUPPORT The continuous cleat is used in areas where shorter rows of panels, pitch changes or end walls occur. The continuous cleat creates a new starter like the eave drip edge. PAGE 5 Install the continuous cleat by first applying a bead of caulking then nailing the cleat in place min. one nail per 12". (See Fig. 1) RIDGE Apply Mongoose ridge vent centered on the ridge. Press firmly to both sides of the ridge in order to make the glue stick to the top of the last row of shingle panels. (See Fig. 2) Place the 22ga ridge support on all ridges of the roof. Fasten the ridge support to the roof deck with long pan head screws through the Mongoose ridge vent and into the roof deck. (See Fig. 3) Do not fasten the ridge support too tightly or you will crush the ridge vent. Place the ridge cap centered over the ridge support. Fasten the ridge cap to the ridge support with stitch screws every 16". (See Fig. 4) When joining two ridge pieces where a valley or hip meets with the ridge, cut and bend the end of the ridge cap over to match the angles where the planes meet. (See Fig. 5) Cut and bend the end second piece to fit over the first and fasten together at the lap with stitch screws. (See Fig. 6)
